How do you tell which store visitors came from an Instagram DM vs. just clicking a regular post?

I get a lot of traffic from people who DM me on Instagram asking about a product, then I send them a link to the store. But right now, when I check WooCommerce Analytics (or Jetpack/GA), I can't tell that traffic apart from someone who just clicked a normal Instagram post. It all just shows up as "social" or "referral."

What I've tried:

  • Adding UTM tags to the links I send in DMs — this works, but I forget to do it half the time since I'm mid-conversation
  • WooCommerce's built-in Analytics — doesn't split traffic this way at all

Does anyone know an easier way to track this? I want to know if DM traffic actually converts better than my other traffic.

How do you track which Shopify store visitors came from Instagram/TikTok DMs vs. other traffic?

Running into a tracking gap and hoping someone's solved this. A good chunk of my traffic comes from people clicking through after a DM conversation on Instagram (someone asks about a product, gets a link, lands on the store) — but in Shopify/GA, that traffic just shows up as generic "social" or "referral," so I can't tell DM-driven visits apart from someone who just clicked a regular Instagram post or story.

What I've tried so far:

  • UTM parameters on links I send manually — works, but only if I remember to add them every time
  • Shopify's default analytics — doesn't break out DM traffic at all

Has anyone found a cleaner way to isolate this specific traffic source? Would help a lot to actually see if DMs are converting better or worse than other channels.
