Are there any artists with a sharper art style I can study from?

A lot of furry art I see is very cute and soft, which isn’t my personal style (not to say it’s any less skillful by any means, just not my preference). I’m inspired to start learning digitigrade and animal anatomy because I have a half-sphinx character in a script I’m writing and would like to illustrate my comic one day. Also have some other humanoid animal races I’d like to be able to design.

I’m not sure if ‘more mature’ is the best way to word it. Grittier, less rounded shape language maybe? With a strong grasp on fundamentals and anatomy. Bonus if there’s a comic or something, but I’m probably reaching at that point. I’m just trying to get inspired and do some studies.

For comparison, an artist that comes to mind that I discovered recently is MAF: https://www.instagram.com/m_maf_f?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==

I also really enjoy Dark Souls and their art direction. Haven’t read it, but Goblin Slayer has cool art as well.

Names for a Sphinx

I have a bit of context but you can skip if you want.

I have a character named Ife, born to two adventurous wives by way of a wish granted by a sphinx when they passed its riddle. The caveat is that she is parts of both parents, but also part sphinx - wings, tail, etc. She grows up to become a caretaker of her parents’ legacy (this magicky museum) and an archer.

The story takes place in a mega-dungeon (called the Athenaeum), which comes about when the museum falls through a wormhole. Some strange space-time stuff happens that morphs it into this massive structure floating in space with hundreds of floors, strange happenings, and dangerous creatures. The appearance is modeled with the vibe of cozy old academia + ancient magick tech + space plants/creatures (imagine Tears of the Kingdom/Scavengers Reign/The Bodleian Library of Oxford). The story has a mix of high-intensity warfare as Ife tries to protect her home from an enemy takeover, with lots of slice of life moments sprinkled in.

In my universe, sphinxes are cosmic beings who live extremely isolated lives. They are abandoned at birth to make their own way so have no concept of family. They dwell in their own pockets of space, minding their own business and generally spurn company but horde knowledge. This one (a cross between a cat and an owl) is much the same, but Ife and her relentless golden retriever energy, and refusal to be anything but best friends, worms her way into the Sphinx’s good graces - whom she refers to as ‘Auntie’. The story sees Ife reintroduce the sphinx to things like curiosity and play (she even brings it a giant ball of yarn) and the idea of family. As the more serious parts of the story progress, the Sphinx becomes a patron of sorts (similar to a DnD warlock or Odysseus/Athena dynamic), speaking in her ear and lending her power.

I’m completely stuck on a name. I thought Egyptian initially for the regal/ancient vibe, but didn’t like anything I found, so I’m open to any origin. I usually search for ‘names meaning xyz’, but I’m not pulled to any particular meaning here. My only caveat is that I don’t want already famous names (Artemis, etc.) Thanks!!

If I’m illustrating my own comic, would it be weird to pay for concept art?

I’m a few years into dedicated study but my skill just isn’t there yet. I can draw from reference but can’t get what’s in my head to come out on paper. I’m struggling to visualize cohesive costume design, have little experience designing environments still, etc.

I hope to one day be able to illustrate my own comic but for now, I’d just like to be able to post “this is the world I’m designing” or make simple animations or short comics.

I don’t know if it would be weird for me to commission concept design to have a reference sheet that I would use to draw from to share these things, or if that would be like stealing someone else’s work? I may just be in my head about it, I can’t tell, so I wanted to ask others. Thanks
