Does anybody have engaging, short stories or poems about disability?

Bonus if it plays with perspective in a unique way. This would be for freshman, so I want it to be something that helps us have a mature conversation around ablism and disability rights.

Has anybody taught both HS and College English?

I'm considering applying for adjunct positions for some extra cash, but not sure if I'm in over my head. It would most likely be for a composition class. Would it be too much for me to do both at the same time? How is the workload as an adjunct?

Did I handle this poorly? (Communication w/ Parents)

A student skipped my class on the last day they had to work on a major assessment. I marked them absent and messaged home to let the parent know the student would lose points for the day and for the assignment.

The parent said their kid insisted they were in class. I explained that not only was she not in her seat, but I check the attendance repeatedly. However, I was very respectful over the phone, and admitted that I could be wrong and would check the editing history of the student’s assignment. There were no edits at all during the class period, even though we worked on it the entire time, and I sent these screenshots to her.

She saw that the assignment was synced during class time (again, it doesn't show any changes made for the entire hour). The student continued to insist that they were in class and said they were sitting in the back. Then she asked if the school could check cameras to confirm whether their kid entered my room. Admittedly, I thought this was a bit much, but I said I would ask the dean. Then I said:

- Yes, I saw that too (in reference to the sync time). However, when you expand it, you can see that the edits did not take place at that time. I am honestly not sure why the timestamp said that, but if she wrote anything on the document at all for the entire period, it would have shown up in those expanded notes, which I sent.

- Also, no students were sitting at the back. 13 students were out yesterday, partially because 6 of them werecutting class. That’s almost half of the class. As a result, the back of the room was empty. So, if she was sitting there, I would have seen.

- I can discuss with the dean. Can I get your email so I can CC you?

- I also do want to emphasize that not only do I go off seating, I triple check my attendance and I count them.

- For that to be a mistake means I had to have made the same mistake repeatedly. I’m not relying on seating alone. So, again, I can ask about the cameras, but most teachers will not have this abundance of proof if she cuts class elsewhere

- (then I sent a google search to explain the sync time) It seems like what we’re seeing there is this—a sync or autosave

The parents said the tone my last response was unprofessional and defensive and requested a meeting with me, the student, parent, principle, guidance counselor, and dean. I, of course, see her point of view, but also feel like this amount of escalation is a lot.

Honestly, I did feel like I was being gaslit, and I wouldn't call it unprofessional, but now I’m second‑guessing myself. I will say, I probably overcommunicated and I'm not going to get so hands on with these situations again and will let the dean handle it in the future. Nonetheless, what's done is done, and I'd like some thoughts.

Property Management Issues

I bought my first multifamily recently and have been working with a property manager. I was waiting and waiting for them to raise the rents, and they kept putting it off to find the ideal time and keep the tenants.

It was more me asking and less of them openly communicating this, so that should have been a sign for me to ask more questions. Unfortunately, I assumed that we would be on the same page and the rents would be market price after all this.

After the contracts have already been signed, I find out that they are far below market and I am coming out of pocket to pay the mortgage, which should have been covered by the rents. What would you do in my situation?
