Odometer fraud in the used cars market in India, more common and less detectable than buyers believe.
One thing that I have noticed is how much trust the buyers have on the odometer reading.
If the number looks low, the car is assumed to be a good buy. And if it's low somewhere, people just ignore it.
Ignore the reality check?
But when the real world inspections take place. Things don't seem to be that simple.
I have seen cases when the physical wear of car doesn't really match the odometer reading. The service history does not match the actual range/ usage.
Why we just rely completely on the mileage. When there is actually so much more than that, which should be considered?
Okay, so when you actually inspect a car which is a old (used car), what gives you confidence about mileage?
The 1L km myth. Why I would rather buy a 100km highway cruiser than a 60k km city car.
We all have seen posts, like someone finds a perfect looking car, but sees a 100,000 km. On dash and just immediately walks away.
I think that's one huge mistake. No matter what I would always choose the 100k km highway over choosing that one 60k km every single time.
And why?
Let me tell you something. There is one thing that people usually hide and that is the constant stop-start, the gear shift issues , very very common.
I would tell you two things to monitor.
- just in case if the cabin vibrates at idle. Which I have seen happening. take care of it. The highway cars stay soft and intact
- listen to the clicking at low speeds, which reveals if the car was hampered or hammered by city parking or if was a smooth highway cruising.
Ever bought a low mileage car that turned to be like a total city beater, or you had some great luck.
I have been in the Indian Used Cars Business for 15 years now. Sharing you the truth no one tells you about.
Well, to Introduce myself. I have been in the Used Cars market for over 15 years now. I have bought, sold, inspected many vehicles throughout India.
I have seen cars that have been like at their best, the best maintained to those that have been in the garages for years, like years.
I know this has been talked about already a lot of times but here is my take -
A. Verification of service history is so important. No matter how genuine things may seem from the outside, not necessarily it's all real from the inside too. Check the service record properly, before signing off anything.
B. I would say don't fall only for how beautiful and perfect the car looks from the outside. Man, it's easy to polish everything out. Just go and do the ground reality check. Like check everything, not once, twice, thrice as much as times you can.
Just remember, the car that looks, like perfectodel from the outside isn't the best fit, always , not necessarily. Do not fall for someone's sweet talks.
Like never. I have been fooled once years back. So I always make sure to cross check everything. If the seller is just forcing you rushing you into anything. Clearly there is something wrong.
Well, just wanted to understand from your end, what is something that makes you trust on used cars.
