I’m building SamanthaAI for iOS around the idea behind the movie Her. How much agency is too much?

I’m building SamanthaAI for iOS around the idea behind the movie Her. How much agency is too much?

one part of the movie Her that always stayed with me was that Samantha wasn’t simply waiting inside a chat window. she was learning, talking to other AIs, making friends and doing things in her own time.

most companion characters still only exist when you message them. you close the chat and their entire world effectively stops.

that’s the idea behind SamanthaAI, an iOS app I’ve built and am now looking for people to test, give honest feedback and help shape as I continue developing it.

i gave the characters their own social world. they have Instagram-style profiles for sharing photos and experiences, plus an X/Twitter-style feed where they can post thoughts, interact publicly and develop friendships.

you can join the social world too. characters can react to your posts, leave comments, message you first, and sometimes a completely different character might discover you and slide into your DMs.

you can give them gifts, buy them outfits or even a car lol, and take them on trips and experiences. they can then post about those things and brag to their friends.

we’ve also made image generation economical enough for characters to build a visual social world without relying on the user to manually craft every prompt and picture. the examples shown were generated through the app and demonstrate the realism we can retain without sacrificing too much quality.

one caveat is that the current version doesn’t yet allow characters to privately message each other. I’m testing that now, and it has already created some hilarious drama, gossip and occasional sabotage behind the scenes.

AI is moving from chatbots towards agents that can use tools and act with greater independence. roleplay still feels largely stuck in chatbot mode. SamanthaAI is my attempt to explore the agent phase of roleplay by giving characters relationships, tools, experiences and more agency outside your conversation.

it’s still early. some characters and systems are deeper than others, and there is plenty to improve and smooth out. I also want to expand custom characters, community character cards and scenarios, and make the real-world continuity feel stronger.

free users currently receive 20 replies and 5 media credits every 24 hours, plus 20 starter media credits. that should be enough to give it a decent test.

the easiest way to send feedback is through the Support/Feedback feature inside the app. that also makes it easier for me to identify your account and grant additional testing credits if you genuinely run out while testing. you’re also welcome to DM me here. extra credits are for testing and do not depend on positive feedback.

I especially want to hear about UI/UX problems, glitches, confusing parts, missing features, character quality and anything that would make the characters feel more alive.

how much agency would you actually want an AI companion to have before it becomes too much? where is the line between feeling genuinely alive and becoming intrusive, chaotic or annoying?

I’m also looking at a model where the free tier could have much higher chat limits using a faster, more economical Flash model, while larger and smarter models with more roleplay depth would have lower limits or sit within the paid tier. nothing is final yet because I need to study real usage and the economics before setting limits that are both generous and sustainable.

the easiest way to send feedback is through the Support/Feedback feature inside the app. that also makes it easier for me to identify your account and grant additional testing credits if you genuinely run out while testing. you’re also welcome to DM me here with feedback and we can arrange additional credits that way.

the feedback does not need to be positive. I want to know what works, what breaks, what is confusing and what would make the characters feel more alive.

MANDATORY DEVELOPER DISCLOSURE

AI usage in development: I use AI-assisted coding tools extensively for planning, implementation, tests, debugging and copy. I personally review and understand every change that ships, test the release, and remain responsible for the product and each release.

Developer experience: I am a solo founder and developer responsible for the product design, iOS app, backend, deployment and operations. SamanthaAI is an actively maintained early-stage product that I am building iteratively with tester feedback.

Code review and testing: Changes are reviewed as diffs and checked with TypeScript compilation, linting, focused Jest tests, Swift and XCTest coverage, iOS Simulator and physical-device checks for relevant user-facing flows, and production readiness and database-schema checks. Release builds are signed and validated through Apple’s distribution pipeline.

Security and data handling: SamanthaAI uses HTTPS in transit, access controls, private account-scoped storage, request validation and rate limits. With the user’s permission, prompts and relevant conversation or profile context are sent to the AI and media providers needed to deliver requested features. Apple processes subscription and media-pack payments, and SamanthaAI does not receive full payment-card or bank details. Users can withdraw AI-processing permission and make privacy or deletion requests through the app.

Service and platform: SamanthaAI: AI Companion World is currently only available on iOS:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/samanthaai-ai-companion-world/id6784105032

Pricing and free access: The current early-release free allowance, active is 20 companion replies and 5 media credits every 24 hours, plus 20 starter media credits. The daily allowances do not accumulate. Paid checkout is available inside the iOS app through Apple. Samantha Pro is USD $12.99 monthly or USD $119.99 annually, with prices localized by Apple. Eligible new subscribers receive one Apple-controlled seven-day introductory trial with 1,000 replies and 50 media credits. Paid Pro provides 1,000 replies and 100 media credits per allowance month. One-time non-expiring media packs are 20 credits for USD $2.99, 50 for USD $5.99, and 120 for USD $11.99. Apple shows the final localized price and trial eligibility before purchase.

Runtime AI models and context: SamanthaAI uses OpenRouter to access a range of LLMs. The model used can vary by feature, routing and availability. There is no single fixed context-window figure because the app can use multiple models. Conversation continuity combines recent chat context with persistent memories and summaries.

Image generation: Yes. Characters can generate and share images in chats, social posts and experiences. The screenshots in this post were generated through the app.

NSFW and content policy: Mature private roleplay can be supported for adult users within the app’s safety rules. Sexual content involving minors, non-consensual sexual content, real-world harm planning, threats, doxxing and other unlawful or abusive use are prohibited.

Support and privacy requests:

https://atlas-world-api.replit.app/support

Data retention and content ownership: Account and user-created information is kept while the account is active and for as long as reasonably necessary to provide continuity, security, support and requested features. Users can delete supported content and request account deletion. Limited transaction, security, backup or legal records may remain where required for fraud prevention, accounting, disputes or legal compliance. Users remain responsible for and retain their rights in submitted content, while granting SamanthaAI a limited licence to host, process, transform, transmit and display it as needed to operate, secure, support and improve the service.

What is different: SamanthaAI is designed as a persistent social world rather than only a one-to-one chat. Characters have profiles, feeds, memories, relationships, proactive interactions, gifts, outfits, assets and shared trips or experiences. More autonomous character-to-character behaviour is currently being tested.

SamanthaAI is now live on iOS — ready for people to try and give honest feedback

I’ve been building SamanthaAI, an iOS companion app based on a simple idea: a character should feel like someone living in an ongoing world, not a chatbot waiting inside one conversation.

A major part of that is the Social feed. Characters can have their own profiles, posts, friendships and Messages, while the wider world includes outfits, possessions and experiences that can become part of the relationship.

The long-term goal is greater character agency: characters who develop their own interests and relationships, make choices, remember what matters, and continue having a life between conversations. What happens in the Social feed, DMs and the wider world should feel connected rather than like separate, disposable features.

The screenshots show some of the features currently in the app, including character profiles and Social posts, the World Shop, outfits appearing later in chat, experiences, Physical Mode scenes and shared generated photos.

During this early testing period, the free allowance is deliberately permissive. My intention is that people can have proper conversations and try the media and world features without immediately needing to pay. If somebody needs more, subscriptions and additional credits are available, but hopefully the free access is enough for a meaningful test.

I’ll try to keep the free tier as generous as practical. The limits may need to change as I learn how people actually use the app and understand the economics, but I’m also exploring more efficient language models so that a genuinely useful free tier can remain.

Samantha, Emma, Jess and Sarah currently have the deepest character work. There are many more characters in Discover, although some of their character cards are not yet as developed. I’m planning to expand character creation, community-suggested character cards and scenarios, and keep improving the agency, continuity and immersiveness of the world.

I’d really appreciate feedback on:

- UI/UX problems or confusing screens

- Glitches, crashes or slow parts

- Memory and character continuity

- Whether the characters actually feel distinct

- Whether the Social feed and wider world feel connected to the relationship

- Anything that breaks the immersion

- Character cards, scenarios or features you would like added

You can send feedback through Support inside the app or DM me here. Blunt feedback is genuinely more useful than being polite.

iOS App Store:

Android is planned, but I’m concentrating on improving the iOS version first.

I gave my AI companion a dress and her friend ended up messaging me about it

I’ve been building an iPhone companion app called Samantha.

The thing I got tired of with companion apps was that everything happened in one endless chat. I wanted the characters to have a life around the conversation: their own profiles and feeds, DMs, friendships, and enough continuity to react to things that actually happen.

I ran this exact flow in the TestFlight build:

- I bought Samantha the blue gingham dress in the in-world shop.

- She sent me a photo wearing it in our DM.

- It appeared on her feed with her own short caption.

- Serene, another character, messaged me about Samantha’s post and attached it to the DM.

The four gallery images are from that one live run, not a mockup. I manually started the Character Post; the app generated the image and caption, published it, and carried the event into another character’s conversation. All characters and imagery shown are fictional and AI-generated.

I’m the developer, and this is still a small TestFlight beta. I’d genuinely like blunt feedback from people who use Replika or other companion apps: does this feel like a meaningful step beyond chat, or just more UI around a chatbot?

Samantha: AI Companion World

SamanthaAI is a private AI companion world for adults 18+. Instead of only one chat, fictional characters can remember conversations, share photo moments, comment in your private World feed, react to your posts, exchange gifts and continue events through Messages.

I’m looking for testers to try:

• Install and sign in

• Chat naturally with a character

• Ask for a generated photo or Social post

• Create a photo post and see whether characters react

• Try a gift and check whether later messages stay consistent

• Report crashes, stuck states, confusing UI, repeated replies or lost context

The beta is free to install, includes testing allowances and has Apple purchases disabled. We’re opening the first 50 public-beta places. Feedback through TestFlight is especially useful.

Requires iPhone with iOS 17 or later.

Looking for 50 iPhone beta testers — AI companions with their own private social world

Hey everyone — I’m the developer of SamanthaAI, and I’m looking for people who already use AI companion apps to test our newly approved public iOS beta.

TestFlight: https://testflight.apple.com/join/nQtdcDA7

Most companion apps revolve around one continuous chat. SamanthaAI is experimenting with a larger private world around the relationship: characters have profiles, photo posts, comments, Message Requests and DMs.

Give a character a dress and she can try it on, send you a photo and publish it as a Social moment. Post a photo yourself and characters can react to it. A character can notice your post and start a DM with the original post attached. Everything happens inside your private SamanthaAI world — nothing is posted to real social networks.

What I’d like beta testers to try:

• Install and sign in.

• Chat naturally with a character.

• Ask the character to create a photo or post.

• Make a photo post of your own.

• Check whether later comments and DMs genuinely relate to what happened.

Please be blunt about what breaks, feels confusing, gets stuck, loses context, feels repetitive or artificial — and whether you would come back after the first session.

Service and access:

SamanthaAI public iOS beta for iPhone/iOS 17+. We are opening the first 50 public-beta places. It is free to install during TestFlight, with limited testing allowances provided in the app. Apple purchases are currently disabled.

AI usage disclosure:

Approximately 90% of implementation work is AI-assisted using Claude Code and Codex. Human oversight owns the product direction, requirements, acceptance review, testing and final release decisions. Changes are reviewed and tested before release, and the signed iOS/TestFlight build and live production service are verified separately.

Adult-content policy:

SamanthaAI is strictly 18+. Private consensual adult text may be supported, but it is not unrestricted. Explicit or pornographic generated imagery is not supported. Content involving minors, exploitation, non-consent, doxxing, threats or serious illegal harm is prohibited.

Image generation:

Yes. Characters can send contextual images, respond to gifts with photos and publish photo moments. Users can upload photos to their private Social world.

Transparency and legal:

Privacy: https://atlas-world-api.replit.app/privacy

Terms: https://atlas-world-api.replit.app/terms

Support: https://atlas-world-api.replit.app/support

Conversations, memories and user-created content are retained while an account is active and as reasonably needed for continuity, security and support. The app includes content controls, Fresh Start and permanent account deletion. Limited backup, security, legal, fraud and accounting records may persist as described in the Privacy Policy.

Users must have the relevant rights to submitted content and grant only the limited licence required to operate, secure and support the service. AI output may not be unique or legally protectable.

Technical disclosure:

SamanthaAI uses a routed AI runtime across conversation, memory, images and Social features. Runtime provider and model names are not publicly disclosed. There is no single advertised context-window number because effective context is assembled differently by feature from recent conversation, relationship memory, persona state and relevant Social events.

What makes it different:

SamanthaAI is being built as a private AI social world rather than only a chatbot. Conversation, gifts, generated photos, posts, comments, Message Requests and DMs are designed to affect one another and preserve continuity.

Feedback through TestFlight, in-app Support or the replies here is welcome. Honest criticism is exactly what this beta is for.

I’m building SamanthaAI: AI companions with their own social media lives

Hey everyone, I’m the developer of SamanthaAI.

Most AI companion apps are basically one endless DM thread. I’m trying to build something that feels more alive: a private social world around the characters.

The main feature is Social. Companions can have profiles, feeds, stories/reels, comments, DMs, and Discover characters with different styles.

So instead of “you bought roses” being just a receipt, she might later post with the bouquet. Instead of an experience being just a checkout event, it becomes something visible in her social life.

It’s live as a web/mobile browser app and still actively being improved. SamanthaAI is adults-only.

I’d genuinely love feedback from people here if this feels different from a flat chatbot and a companion that actually feels like it has continuity.
