What have you been doodling lately? Does the weather affect what you draw?

I’ve seen painted boxes. And I’ve seen people create gouache and acrylic paintings (lots of floating goldfish) ON cardboard.

But am I the only one painting the cardboard itself? Darn those World Watercolor Month prompts anyway🤣

It’s an honor to be asked as a professional artist to do a livestream demo — but frantic if you want to paint more than a quick sketch. Typically the full meeting is an hour, and by the time introductions, looking at samples of your work, and reserving a few minutes to let viewers share their painting…that’s about 40-45 minutes of actual painting.

The night before I’d had a dream that I got up in the morning, sat down at my desk that I set up ahead. But I’d completely forgotten how to paint. “I have two hours to learn to paint again!!” And somehow in dreamland, I learned.

In real life, I hadn’t forgotten. But my process in painting fire is…well…messy. This demo was no different. I found myself saying, “I know it’s a hot mess right now but hang with me…”

I got through it, and many viewers painted along and created great paintings. Which made me feel better about my mess🤪

So if you attend any live demo or event, I ask you to provide affirming feedback. When I was worried I had a mess going, someone read me comments from the Facebook feed (I only saw zoom), and one person even wrote a limerick (!!!)—and all that really boosted me.

Don’t assume a professional artist doesn’t have the same fears you do. Especially when teaching live.

Did you know that for world watercolor month that Daniel Smith put out a list of color prompts? (See 3rd pic) Today is Gray Titanium so I decided to put a blob of each of my grays on a big swatch sheet, and then use those to paint from.

Used in this painting are Gray Titanium, and Alvaro’s Fresco and Caliente. I have plenty of paint in those blobs to try more neutral subjects… Got a suggestion?

For those worried I was giving up just because my bannering group disbanded - nope. I went out Friday morning with another group. "ICE OUTTA FIFA CUP." Not ironically, this pedestrian walkway above the highway is just 4 short miles from the detention center in Tacoma.

Graphite and a touch of white conte on toned paper. In the reference. I loved how half the lashes curled up and over and half were down below the eyeliner line. #It’sTheLittleThings 😍 Have a great weekend everybody!

After 18 months, we’re divvying up the banners to others in our area. I didn’t expect to be this sad. Our organizer hit the wall and is suddenly done, and none of the rest of us have capacity.

But I got invited to a couple of other banner events later this month, so I’ll still be carrying my weight for democracy. And holding it over my head on deer fencing, whenever possible.

Take breaks, people. Don’t let the oligarchs get you down. They want to wear you out.

I’m about to embark on a drawing-reel-a-day in June, so I’m warming up ✍🏻

I brought my A game. With only 12 colors, I wanted to see how many completely different scenes I could create for the new marker airbrush class. Which one’s your preference?

I created more of a summer vibe rather than the photo reference that was more like fall.

All Copic airbrush *except* the rope in multiliner & the name on the boat in white Acrea with airbrush over it.

When the sun’s at the right angle at the right time of year, we can see our messages on the road below. Although the photo has to be flipped to spellcheck it.🤣 If you’re near Fife, Washington, let me know if you’d like to join us.

I think I’d be better at airbrushing if I was consistent… but every couple years I get it out and airbrush everything, and then I put it away and I stop. 🤣

People ask if you use more ink when airbrushing and the aforementioned is why I say yes— airbrush uses less ink than marker strokes, but when you start air brushing *everything*… then you just use more marker than usual. 😆

I love it when a watercolorist is easy to follow even without explaining what they’re doing. My painting is clunkier than Dino Pajao’s demo—but it’s still better than what I’d have done on my own.
