It's Possible!

I walked into my local Target on the way to work and saw three Mega Evolution-Ascended Heroes Mega Meganium ex Boxes. And...I grabbed one.

The lady working the floor seemed shocked...she stopped me as I was walking and said "you know you can buy 2 right?"

To which I replied: "my kids have enough cards, they'll be stoked to get 2 boosters each. Someone else's kids should get stoked out too!"

She legit looked whistfully off into the distance and said quietly "I wish people were buying these for their kids."

Part of me wanted to go back for the second one knowing that most likely scalpers will end up with these. But on the off-chance that some other kids might get some msrp cards, I decided to leave it. And most importantly, I didn't walk away feeling like some sleazebag.

Is it a gambling addiction?

I have been trying to get my kids some cards for a few weeks now and stop by a VM at a local Safeway and the Target across the street 1-2 times per week on the way to school. I also ride my bike by the Target most days on the way to work. Every...single...day I see the same two guys and/or their cars (I'm a car guy so noticed one of their WRXs and the others beat old Chevelle). One dude is in his 40s and looks one step out of homelessness, the other guy is in his 20s and looks relatively normal.

They both act like junkies every time I see them walking towards the cards. Half-run, trying to act like they're looking at other stuff as well. I've honestly never seen anything like it.

As the title suggests, I'm wondering when is an appropriate time to transition from rec to comp? My son just turned 6, which seems mighty young to me. That said, I've been approached by two comp coaches suggesting we bring him out to tryouts despite the fact that we only have u8 comp teams in the area. He's okay skill-wise, but he has a field and game awareness that seems to set him apart from a lot of his rec league.

On the one hand, I want to honor his crazy enthusiasm for the sport by giving him the best opportunties to play. On the other hand, I don't want to risk crushing that enthusiasm by getting him into a difficult/unfair position too soon.

I had an honest conversation with him explaining he'd be going from one of the oldest to the youngest player on the team and that he'd be playing against bigger, faster, and better players. His response suprised the heck out of me coming from a 6 year old. "Yeah, but if I'm out with a bunch of other players who are better than me, then I can learn from them."
