Help Writing a Horror/Thriller Short

The goal for this project is to take a much bigger story I'm developing and whittle a segment of it down to a short story that I can build around and eventually adapt as a screenplay.

I have the full story outlined already and have a good sense of which aspect lends itself best to the short story format piece, but am open-minded and good with hearing feedback or brainstorming to make sure I get that right.

I'm looking to work with an experienced and authentic voice who gets the genre and has conviction that they are right for this particular project.

Ideal scenario:

  1. You have published pieces that I can view online or in docs specific to the thriller and/or horror genres
  2. You are US-based (I am in Los Angeles)
  3. You are willing to sign an agreement if we work together that affirms no part of your work produced in this project leverages AI or LLMs
  4. BONUS if you are a true crime junkie and understand that culture

If this sounds like a good match please DM me with a confirmation that all of those first 3 conditions are true, and a link where I can read some of your work.

When I feel like I've found a match, I'll pay $60 for a two page test run (~500 to 600 words) of the story. You can write from any point in the story's outline that you think resonates best with your style.

If that pilot is aligned, we can negotiate what the complete job costs and go from there but the $0.07-0.12 rate range mandated for this community is in budget.

Any questions can be posted as replies or you can just DM me as well.

  4. BONUS if you are a true crime junkie

If this sounds like a good match please DM me with a confirmation that all of those 3 conditions are true, and a link where I can read some of your work.

I'll pick a few to do a test run where I'll pay you to write 2-3 pages of the broader story. You can pick any point from the outline that you think resonates best with your style.

When I've picked the right writer, we can negotiate what this job costs and go from there.

Any questions can be posted as replies or you can just DM me as well.

Creative partner(s) to collaborate with on a unique horror/thriller project

The story I'm working on centers on a group of life-long friends who are still trying to stay connected in their early 20s despite college/work/life pulling them apart, but they always make time for an annual camping trip along the river in their home town of Lone Pine in 1985.

On this camping trip, they go on a hike near camp to explore a set of caves that have been inaccessible for 10+ years until very recently due to storm damage.

Inside the cave they find a backpack that is tucked away between some rocks on a ledge, and the backpack contains a few things, one of which is an old cassette recorder with a tape inside labeled 'Mikey on the Scene #5". The batteries in the recorder are dead, so they have to wait to find out what, if anything, is still on it.

Back at camp, they play the tape in a walkman and realize it contains evidence of an investigation by a young boy trying to find out what happened to his best friend, Reggie, and several other kids back in the summer of 1973.

Obsessed with whether or not this is a legitimate crime or just child's play, they spend the next 3 days following the clues in the recording to trace Mikey's steps and validate or refute the claims. It does not end well.

This isn't a camping teen scream slasher, and there's a massive plot twist at the end that I am hoping no one will see coming if executed well.

I'm looking to collaborate on this story with one or two other writers who see this as having potential and want to build the story together as a team.

As far as how I look at this, it has a lot of extensibility into sequels, prequels, and even some faux-reality companion content like present-day true crime style fictionalized podcast and vlog/blog content. So if this sounds like something you'd want to dive into a bit more and explore working together, please send me a DM or comment and I can message you.
