UP Govt to train 10,000 'Gau Mitras' for sensitising Gen Z towards cow protection

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh has announced that it will train 10,000 “Gau Mitras (friends of cows)” who will sensitise the younger generation towards cow protection. The state government announced on Sunday (August 16) that the Gaur Mitras will also develop a self-reliance model by connecting it with rural economy, natural farming, women’s empowerment, green energy and employment, reported The Hindu.

“The Yogi government is now preparing to involve the new generation, particularly Gen Z, in its cow protection campaign across Uttar Pradesh. Through village-level campaigns, young people will be made aware of cow protection, cow service and its social and economic significance. Around 10,000 ‘Gau Mitras’ will be prepared for this purpose,” said an official statement of the government.

Bottles of urine, 7000 tonnes trash: Haridwar's struggle after Kanwar Yatra

The annual Kanwar Yatra is over, and the Land of Gods now has mountains of trash to deal with.

Nearly five crore pilgrims visited Haridwar, in 'Devbhoomi' Uttarakhand, to collect water from the Ganga this Sawan. As they made their way back after Shivratri, they left behind heaps of trash.

Visuals showed discarded clothing, plastic items, and Kanwar structures scattered on the ghats.

The ghat wasn't any less dirty at Har ki Pauri, the most iconic of the over hundred ghats in Haridwar.

Religious faith should never be used as a reason to ignore public safety or legal requirements. The same rules should apply to everyone, regardless of the occasion or identity of the people involved.

The Kanwar Yatra is an important religious journey for millions of devotees, and peaceful religious expression deserves respect. At the same time, faith and law should go hand in hand. A video circulating online appears to show some Kanwar pilgrims carrying axes, sticks and other weapon-like objects. The footage also appears to show multiple people riding on the same two-wheelers, some without visible number plates, while certain riders appear to be without helmets. These claims should be verified by the authorities before conclusions are drawn.

The bigger question is about equal enforcement of the law. If authorities find that someone is carrying a weapon or prohibited object in circumstances that constitute an offence, should the matter end with simply confiscating the item, or should appropriate legal action follow? Similarly, riding four people on one motorcycle, riding without helmets, using vehicles without proper registration plates, and dangerous driving can put both riders and other road users at risk.

Religious faith should never be used as a reason to ignore public safety or legal requirements. The same rules should apply to everyone, regardless of the occasion or identity of the people involved.

Drunk headmaster defecates, then makes students clean it, allege parents

He comes to school drunk. He defecates on the premises. He makes students clean up the mess. The disturbing allegations were levelled against a primary school headmaster by young students and their parents in the Maihar district of Madhya Pradesh.

Kol is always late to the school, alleged the villagers and the parents. He shows up as late as noon. Left with no instructions during this time, the children keep wandering around, their parents claimed.

Regular classes are not held, and the mid-day meal system is disrupted. Moreover, he spits gutkha (chewing tobacco) all over the premises, the stains of which were visible on the walls. The most serious allegation is that the teacher defecates inside the school under the influence and makes the students clean it. The parents argued that this constitutes a serious violation of the children's mental and physical well-being.

The Bofors controversy also brought Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi into the spotlight. He was accused of acting as a middleman and receiving alleged kickbacks in the deal. Rajiv Gandhi was also accused of receiving kickbacks, but the allegations against him were never established in court.

V.P. Singh emerged as a key figure in the controversy. After being moved from Finance to Defence, he pushed for an inquiry into Bofors and resigned from Rajiv Gandhi’s government in 1987. He later left Congress, launched the Jan Morcha and became the face of an anti-corruption campaign.

The controversy went on to become a major issue in the 1989 Lok Sabha election, contributing to Congress losing its majority. Four decades later, the Supreme Court’s latest order has finally brought the long-running legal saga to an end.

Theatre artist Subhankar Dassharma has alleged that he was assaulted near Shyamnagar railway station in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, around 35 km from Kolkata, after a group of men targeted him because they believed he was Muslim based on his black kurta and pyjamas.

In a post on Facebook, Dassharma said the incident took place around midnight on July 28, while he was returning home after a theatre performance.

According to him, four men stopped him and questioned his religious identity after noticing his black kurta and pajamas.

He said they asked whether he was a Muslim, to which he responded, "What if I am a Muslim?" arguing that in a free and sovereign country, he was under no obligation to disclose his religion to strangers.

Dassharma alleged that the men then began dragging and assaulting him while repeatedly demanding to know whether he was Muslim. Refusing to back down, he said he told them that he was a Muslim.

He alleged that the attackers then beat him mercilessly, repeatedly striking his eyes, head, ears and chest, knocking him to the ground while chanting "Jai Shri Ram."

He further claimed that the men tore his black kurta during the assault and that he briefly lost consciousness.

After regaining consciousness, Dassharma said he somehow managed to return home but spent the next three to four days suffering from severe physical pain and psychological trauma.

A photograph shared by Dassharma shows him with his left eye swollen shut and visible bruising and swelling on the left side of his face, apparently documenting injuries he said he sustained in the alleged assault.

He initially consulted doctors over the phone and took pain medication before seeking medical treatment when his condition did not improve.
