Funny how growing older makes you appreciate intelligent public discourse

One weird thing about adulthood is genuinely enjoying Senate sessions. I used to think they were boring, now I find myself tuning in, and even getting impressed. A few takeaways from the pastime that replaced doomscrolling:

  1. It encourages critical thinking and even helps me pick up new words and perspectives along the way. The more I listen, the easier it becomes to distinguish intelligent discourse from empty statements and political drama.
  2. You gain respect for preparation and competence. It becomes obvious who studied the issue, who came prepared, and who truly respects the responsibility of public office.
  3. You begin appreciating people who can speak with substance. The best of them don’t just talk loudly, they can explain clearly, ask sharp questions, and speak with logic and composure.
  4. You realize your vote truly matters. There’s a certain fulfillment in watching someone you voted for speak with wisdom, integrity, and readiness. It reminds you that choosing them carefully is important.
  5. You grasp how our country works. Budgets, laws, national issues, corruption, healthcare, education. You realize good and bad governance affects your everyday life.
  6. You become better at identifying who deserves to be there. Some rely on theatrics, while others genuinely understand policy, governance, and public service.
  7. You recognize leadership is more than popularity. Being funny or famous doesn’t automatically mean someone is qualified.
