How to calculate actual towing capacity?
I'm reading up on whether a 2026 Toyota Rav4 Plugin Hybrid can tow my 2019 Flagstaff 176MAC popup camper. It's a very small camper (8' box), only about 1600 lbs dry weight, and I hear about lots of people towing them with small cars. But I'm having trouble making the math work.
As I understand it, towing capacity is the car's GCVW, minus it's curb weight, minus passengers and payload weight. The 2026 Rav4 has a GCVW of 5530, and a curb weight of 4500. This seems to indicate that it can only tow around 1,000 lbs even with no passengers/payload in the car - assuming three passengers and some luggage that would be down to around 500 lbs total towing capacity. But Toyota claims a towing capacity of 3500 lbs, which seems impossible given the GCVW and curb weight and even if you disregard the passengers and payload.
What am I overlooking or doing wrong here? Based on those numbers, the Toyota really can't tow anything, since you're gonna be hard pressed to find anything you can tow under 500 lbs.
