Visiting Birmingham

Hey guys ! Just was wondering how you pay on public transport in Birmingham. Can you use contactless like in London ?

Sorry if it’s a silly question, across all forms so trains, trams and buses, all take contactless and no need to buy tickets ?

Unpaid working hours

I work in a school and we often have after school events (parents evening, award ceremonies, open days etc) that take place outside of my working hours that staff have to stay for. I’m not teaching staff, I work in the administration team and we typically manage and support these events. These events can run for anything up to 2-4 hours after my finishing time depending on the event type,?However we don’t get paid.

Legally , you’re supposed to be paid for hours worked unless it’s voluntary, I work in a London school so in my head, they can’t be doing anything illegal… can they ? They wouldn’t risk it coming back on them?

I got stick for booking a short weekend holiday from Saturday to Sunday , although I quote “knew that the event happens every year on the same day and was in the diary”

I’ve recently joined the union but was wondering your options, keeping in mind since starting there no other staff have ever complained about not being paid overtime or made it an issue

Is a 1 hour and 20 minute journey one way a long commute?

I’ve seen this studio flat in south London for 1.1k. I really like it only thing is the transport links aren’t great. There a train station 2 minutes away but again to save on travel cost I always prefer bus as I only make 31k atm. I also don’t want to flat share to get a cheaper deal on rent. What do you guys think ? There’s also no gyms locally that I can see, so would have to go to a gym near work around London Bridge

Just to add:

I’m 29 so don’t want live at home anymore

I would be commuting 5 days a week

This is the only area I feel in London I can rent for around this price, soo the commute will more or less be the same no matter the flat

My only option would be hopefully finding a job closer to the area

How long does it take you as a landlord to choose potential tenants

I had a viewing yesterday for the most perfect studio, it was an “open day” viewing and we could show up anytime between a certain time. When I got there, there were already two people viewing so we was told to wait, as he took two at a time. At the end, I saw on his laptop he had a list of everyone who was interested, names, email, number, salary etc

He said he’ll be in contact and I’m new to this so wasn’t sure on next steps. I’m not sure if I should place a holding deposit without the landlord specifically saying we could?

It was only yesterday but I sent a follow up message on open rent this morning, stating my interest again, but no response. It’s still available on open rent but has been removed from Rightmove. Isit likely he’s already picked someone ?

[UK] so I had my disciplinary meeting last week and was given a first warning for lateness. What happens now ?

I had my first ever disciplinary meeting for lateness, usually no more than 5 minutes and it honestly doesn’t have an affect on anybody I work with as it’s an office job. But I completely understand I shouldn’t really be late. Now I haven’t received a letter or any communication stating that I was given a first warning and what is to happen after this, I was soo anxious throughout as I didn’t have a companion or union rep I just nodded to everything.

Also any advice for applying for other jobs, is this career ending ? Will they put this in a future reference

Should my fixed retainer be rough again my tongue ?

Just got my bottom fixed retainer and my tongue can’t take it ! It feels soo rough, my tongue is soo sore and forming an ulcer. I understand it may take a while to get used to but surely it shouldn’t feel rough (the glue) ! I’ve had to buy ortho wax the next day
