Got my first post-grad job!

I’m completely elated!!!

I graduated with my bachelor’s in Information Technology from a large University in May ‘26. I’ve been applying to a range of (tech-y) jobs nonstop from April to now, and have had mixed results.

Most of the jobs I’ve applied for have been your typical entry-level IT jobs- Business Analyst, Helpdesk, that sort of thing. I applied to a couple ‘reach’ jobs to try my luck.

And wouldn’t you know… I got a callback for an AI/Cloud Consultant position. Thought I had no chance. Did some studying, passed one technical interview, passed another, then passed a third technical panel interview. Had a final interview today with HR, and I got the job!

It’s with a fantastic multi-national corporation, and pays more than I would have dreamed myself making at this point. I had zero connections there! So:

DON’T GIVE UP!!! Grind applications every day, apply for a broad range of positions, and sell yourself!!! (I’m in tech, so I use GitHub/StackOverflow but you can show your skills anywhere.)

Thanks for all the help and advice on this sub. I’d be happy to help anyone!!

P.S. Also, DON’T GIVE UP!! You should have seen how bad I was stressing. It’ll all work out!

I HATE WHEN GOOGLE AI SPOILS PARTS OF MY BOOK

I’m currently reading The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky, and just finished Book III. I got my hands on a very nice Constance Garnett translation.

I am having an absolute blast reading it! After each Book, I like to step back to review my own personal notes and study the characters + events of the last book before I continue to the next.

Sometimes this includes visiting online book clubs, sometimes reading chapter reviews, just to see if there are any ideas or big themes I’ve missed so far.
So tell me why I look up a TBK Book III book club, and the very first AI search result read:

>!Why did Smerdyakov hang himself?!<

THAT DOESN’T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE BOOK/CHAPTER/WHATEVER. NOTHING. This was a character that was just recently was introduced, and his tragic backstory laid out. I have no idea when >!he will be hung!<. But I know >!he will hang himself!<.

I know it’s my fault for looking online, but ffs. I thought I was being pretty explicit with the information I wanted to receive by typing “The Brothers Karamazov Book III Analysis”.

IM PISSED I HATE THE AI OVERVIEW AND SUGGESTIONS!!!!!!

Glue traps for mice… completely inhumane and totally effective

TL;DR: If a mouse has been driving you crazy you have exhausted most other practical options and find yourself at wits end… just get the glue trap. Solved two months of torment in two hours. Suck it up and send it back to Eywa.

My whole life I’ve been outspoken against glue traps. It’s cruelty, and I still think it is. That hasn’t changed. I might be more open to using them now.

You HAVE to understand how crazy this mouse drove me. For two months it tormented me, darting around barely visible out of the corner of my eye, chewing through my instrument cables, running directly across my feet. The only time he made himself clearly visible was to a girl I had over while she was using the bathroom. She didn’t talk to me again after that night. Rat bastard.

Last night I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t, for the life of me, get this mouse off of my mind. I figured to get some peace of mind, I’d jam 3 of the biggest, thickest hardcover books I owned at the bottom of my door. That way the mouse couldn’t invade my room while I was sleeping. It was a silly thought, it had no reason to go in my room anyways.

So then it’s probably no surprise to learn that I woke up to find that the mouse had chewed through almost half of the copy of the Complete Sherlock Holmes that I used to block the door. That book was 1200 pages. “This is even worse”, I thought…… this mouse can read. Ewwwwewwwweeeweeeee.

That was my last straw with Remy. In the two months I had tried catch and release traps, no-sight traps, electric traps, snap-traps, cartoonishly yellow cheddar cheese all to no avail. Don’t say anything about my trap placement, my baiting strategy, or any other idea you have that you think is better than what I tried. Trust me. I tried it.

Got off work. Bought glue-traps, got home and set the traps. The traps were out no more than 2 hours before they got Remy. Yeah it was pretty gross. It made me queasy. I felt horrible for the guy. Bonked him on the head with a broomstick and that was all she wrote. The moment I tossed the trap, I felt an insane euphoric relief. All of that torment for something that could have been over in a couple hours.

Grandfather’s Matchbox Collection

My grandfather passed away this winter, and we have been cleaning out his house. I came across his collection of matchboxes that I never knew about.

Grandad worked in marketing for the RJR tobacco company, and travelled a ton. There have to be close to 500 of them total. They are all in fantastic condition and nearly all of them are unopened.
I posted a handful of my favorites. The years on the boxes range from 1970 to the mid 1980’s.

Anyone have any ideas on how to display/store these? I don’t know if I can keep the whole collection, but I’d certainly like to keep the boxes from around my local area and the ones with cool designs.
