Seadragon's Shitposting Series - The SoCon

Time to tackle a big boy, and at the request of u/Jolly_Job_9852, I'm taking on the Southern Conference. They added a new school this year in Tennessee Tech, who stands to be a challenger in their first season.

Let's dance.

Mercer - King of the SoCon Rock

Last Season: 9-3 | Lost to South Dakota, 47-0, in the 2nd Round

The Bears opened 2025 in a very auspicious way, seeing their opener against UC Davis called off because Mother Nature was on the rag and then getting bopped on the nose by Presbyterian. They weren't going to stand for that and blazed their way through the remainder of the schedule until the annual SEC Sacrifice game, this time against Auburn. This run got them a top 8 seed and 1st round bye... which lead to them getting curb stomped by South Dakota. Needless to say, there's more to be done here.

Conference: Home - Furman, Western Carolina, The Citadel, East Tennessee State; Road - VMI, Samford, Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech [Score: 8/10]

Goal for the Season: The final two games are the most important because it may separate the Bears from repeating as conference champions to possibly being on the outside sitting in. Tennessee Tech would love to take over this conference and ETSU nearly got you.

Tennessee Tech - New Roost, Same old Angry Birds

Last Season: 11-2 | Lost to North Dakota, 31-6, in the 1st Round

Leaving the Ohio Valley was a smart move for the Golden Eagles as they now have better competition and a chance to rule over a new roost... just don't expect the other schools here to let these newbies run away with crown.

Non-Conference: vs. Monmouth, at Chattanooga, vs. Eastern Kentucky, at Mississippi State [Score: 7/10]

Conference: Home - Samford, Furman, VMI, Mercer; Road - Wofford, Western Carolina, The Citadel, East Tennessee State [Score: 6/10]

Goal for the Season: Despite its status as a non-conference game set before the move, going to Chattanooga will be a great measuring stick to see where the Golden Eagles land on the SoCon totem pole.

East Tennessee State - Set Sail or Get off the Pot

Last Season: 7-5

ETSU didn't exactly light the world on fire, but they do have wins over an Elon team that was getting votes and a win over a ranked Western Carolina team. That might be the launch point for these guys.

Western Carolina - Hillbilly Kitty goes 'What about us?'

Last Season: 7-5

After starting the season at 0-3, Western Carolina was in trouble. BIG trouble. They would then reel off a six game winning streak that put them in the conversation, but back-to-back losses to Mercer and East Tennessee State ended those hopes. Now they need to make that next step.

Chattanooga - It's the Mocs! It's the Mocs!

Last Season: 5-7

The Mocs didn't have a great season, but they did get to .500 in conference play. Basically, they beat the teams they were supposed to beat and lost to those who were clearly superior to them (except for ETSU).

Non-Conference: at West Georgia, vs. Tennessee Tech, at Eastern Kentucky, at Alabama [Score: 7.75/10]

Seadragon's Shitposting Series - The Pioneer League

Time for another episode of the Triple S and today, the aim is to give the Pioneer League some love (read: slap it around like the 98 pound weakling that it is).

You know the rules, so here we go.

San Diego - Unfinished Business

Last Season: 8-4

Last year, the Toreros were the pick to win it all and they played that part very well, beating teams like Southern Utah and Princeton. But, they lost to Drake... and that loss costed them everything. Now they're on the warpath and nothing is going to stop them.

Non-Conference: vs. UC Davis, at Idaho State, at Cal Poly [Score: 6.5/10]

Conference: Home - Davidson, Valparaiso, Marist, Stetson; Road - St. Thomas, Butler, Dayton, Drake [Score: 7/10]

Goal for the Season: The league did them no favors as the next four teams in the coaches poll are road games. They defeated three out of those four last season at home... but the one that got away was Drake. They'll have to wait until November 7th for revenge.

Drake - Iowa Doggo

Last Season: 8-4 | Lost to South Dakota, 38-17, in the 1st Round

Drake started out 1-2 thanks largely to getting slapped silly by both South Dakota schools. Then, something clicked. The Bulldogs blazed through the conference and despite getting tripped up by St. Thomas, they won the automatic bid and got clapped by the Coyotes again. Still, back-to-back conference titles is nothing to scoff at, but they have another new coach to break in - Matt Walker, the man behind the revival at Wisconsin-River Falls.

Goal for the Season: Time to see if the 'Top Gun' offense is all that and a bag of chips, and what better way to prove it by taking the Bulldogs to Montana. Also, going to Northern Iowa to face another former Drake coach is just hilarious in all forms.

St. Thomas (MN) - Well, We're Waiting...

Last Season: 7-5

If there's a team here that was more infuriating to watch, it was the Tommies. They can blow weaker teams out of the water (See the four game winning streak where they dropped 50+ points in three out of four games) while getting tripped by the likes of Butler, San Diego and Presbyterian. They did beat Drake as well, so it's not like they couldn't beat anyone good.

Dayton - Back to Normal?

Last Season: 7-4

After losing the opener to Eastern Illinois, the Flyers got hot and won five in a row... then came the banana peels. The only saving grace was that they ended the Cinderella run of Presbyterian. Let's see if they can avoid those banana peels.

Butler - Bitch Slapped by Reality

Last Season: 6-6

After a 9-3 season that I called a fraud, the fraud department came calling and it had Butler's number. In fact, it had their number throughout the season and the Bulldogs crash landed at .500 for the year. With a non-conference schedule that is much like 2024 (Read: SWAFT!), there's a chance they could repeat that even year bullshit... and better yet, all their home games will be on ESPN+ this season. NO MORE FLOSPORTS!!! Cue the chorus of angels singing

Marist - Outfoxing their Past

Last Season: 5-7

The Red Foxes were coming off an ugly 1-10 campaign in 2024, so things needed to change. Well, after a 5-7 campaign, I say mission accomplished. Now comes the next step in moving up from the mid tier (cue the MJF "MID!!!" .gif) and getting into the upper half of the conference.

The same four teams are on the schedule, but the sites are flipped. If the Red Foxes can take down someone else (They almost beat Butler last year), things will be looking up.

Presbyterian - Cue the Daffy Duck bit about "I can only do this trick one time."

Last Season: 10-2

Who knew that the breakout story of the FCS would come from little old Presbyterian. The Blue Hose were molten lava hot until Dayton crashed the party. A one point loss to Davidson prevented them from winning the conference title, but they were on the list for the First Four Out. Now comes the run back, just without their coach and their star quarterback... they went westward to West Georgia.

Also, beat Western Carolina so that way, I can enjoy drinking the tears of u/Jolly_Job_9852 as he probably wishes the Catamounts could do something. Secondly... you get Davidson and Dayton at home. It's time for REVENGENCE!

Morehead State - What Does Everyone Want?

Last Season: 6-6

Coming off a 7-5 season, 6-6 is probably a small step backwards for the Eagles, despite winning the games they should have won and lost the games that you knew they would lose.

Last Season: 2-10

Oh, the wheels have fallen off this busted ass raggedy wagon they call a football team. 3 years ago, this was a playoff team. Now? TRASH. Just utter trash. They only got two wins - defeating Division III Greensboro and then, by some sort of black magic, they edged out a ranked Presbyterian team. Well, this uphill climb has to start somewhere.

In fact, they don't leave the friendly confines of Davidson Stadium for the first month of the season. If they don't win two or three games off of this home stand, something has gone horribly wrong.

Stetson - Clown Show, Clown Show

Last Season: 3-9

Oh, Stetson... you guys are just awful. Just fucking awful. I mean, you lost to an NAIA team. AT HOME! That was the start of a bad season where when they lost, it was a Belt to Ass type of loss (Read: 63-0 loss to Chattanooga, 59-7 loss to Harvard and a whole bunch of conference based ass whooping). Either way, it set the tone for a season that was forgettable as their only ways came against everyone's favorite punching bag in Virginia-Lynchburg and Stetson. Seadragon's Shitposting Series - NEC/Independents

Welcome to a brand new series - the Triple S (Seadragon's Shitposting Series). It's basically an early season preview with a flair for being 'original'.

Let's begin with an easy conference to understand: The NEC. There's a little change here as St. Francis leaves for Division III (and leaving their nickname behind as well) while New Haven is now part of conference play. Chicago State and Merrimack will be included here just for funsies.

Here and in other episodes, teams will be listed in the order of the official preseason poll. So, without further ado... let's have some fun at the expense of the 99 pound weakling.

Central Connecticut State - Bedeviling the NEC

Last Season: 8-5 | Lost to Rhode Island 27-19 in the 1st Round

The defending champions are looking to become the first team to three-peat as champions since Robert Morris' impressive five year run in the late 90s. The Blue Devils have the firepower to do so, especially on defense with DB Chris Jean coming back. On offense, Donovan Wadley and Michael Trovarelli lead the receiving corps for this surprisingly strong offense.

Non-Conference: at South Dakota, at Toledo, at Montana State, vs. American International [Score: 8/10]

Conference: Home - Wagner, New Haven, Robert Morris, Duquesne; Road: Mercyhurst, Stonehill, Long Island [Score: 6/10]

Goal for This Season: Making sure they survive a tough opening stretch that includes trips to South Dakota and defending national champion Montana State with a game against FBS Toledo sandwiched in between. If they can survive that, the rest of the season opens up for them.

Duquesne - Second Banana

Last Season: 7-5

The Dukes did beat CCSU last season, but losses in back-to-back weeks against Wagner and Long Island prevented them from getting back to the mountain top. They do have the best offense in the NEC, lead by stud running back Ness Davis. In fact, they've had the best offense in this conference in the past three seasons.

Non-Conference: at Air Force, at Youngstown State, at Washington State, vs. Rio Grande [Score: 8.25/10]

Conference: Home - Long Island, Wagner, Robert Morris, Mercyhurst; Road - Stonehill, New Haven, CCSU [ Score: 7/10]

Goal for the Season: Like CCSU, the early goal is surviving a tough opening stretch that sees them play two FBS schools with a trip to face Beau Brungard and the mighty Penguins (PENGUINS!!!) in the middle. After that? All eyes on November 21st at CCSU. Win here and the NEC is their for the taking.

Long Island - Shark Bait? Shark Bait.

Last Season: 6-6

The Sharks started poorly, going 1-5 to start the season (that lone win? At Eastern Michigan... cue the Shipment of Failure!). Then, things clicked and the Sharks won five of their final six games with the lone loss coming to conference champion CCSU, and that was only a 10-7 game. Can the Sharks ride this wave of momentum?

Non-Conference: at North Dakota, at Kansas, vs. Albany, vs. Villanova, at Florida International [Score: 6.75/10]

Conference: Home - Mercyhurst, Stonehill, CCSU; Road - Duquesne, Wagner, New Haven, Robert Morris [Score: 7/10]

Goal for the season: Finding a way to keep that late season momentum will be key for the Sharks, especially since they get a mid tier CAA squad and one of the favorites in the Patriot League coming to their place.

Wagner - Still Climbing...

Last Season: 5-7

5-7 isn't great, but for a school like Wagner, it's a big deal. Especially when it comes with a 4-3 conference record, which is their best NEC showing in nearly a decade. Easier said then done, I think.

Goal for the Season: Week Zero provides a great chance for the Seahawks to get an early jump in the conference race. Win here and being a potential contender could happen.

Mercyhurst - No Mercy for the Hurst

Last Season: 5-7

The Lakers went 5-7 last season against one of the toughest schedules in the nation, taking on three ranked teams on the road in a row. That toughened them for a 4-3 conference season, which included a seven point loss to CCSU.

Non-Conference: at Youngstown State, at New Mexico State, at New Mexico, vs. Glenville State (WV), at Western Kentucky [Score: 10/10]

Conference: Home - CCSU, Wagner, New Haven; Road - Long Island, Robert Morris, Stonehill, Duquesne [Score: 8/10]

Goal for the Season: Same as last season - survive that bat shit insane non-conference schedule that has has somehow gone from three ranked FCS teams to three FBS teams. If they can hold one of those FBS teams to, say, 17 points like they did with Montana State last season, then that might be the biggest moral victory in their young FCS era.

Robert Morris - Back to square one

Last Season: 3-9

Well, that was a total thud for the Colonials. 3-9 for a team that was hoping to compete for the conference title is not good... thankfully, they can clear that mess from their memory.

Non-Conference: vs. West Virginia State, at Akron, at Buffalo, vs. Norfolk State, at Morgan State [Score: 5.5/10]

Conference: Home - New Haven, Mercyhurst, Stonehill, Long Island; Road - Wagner, CCSU, Duquesne

Goal for the Season: This team is only one with two goals here. Goal number 1 is to take two out of three against the conference teams on the road, all higher ranked teams in the coaches poll. The second goal? Throw the biggest monkey wrench into Akron's plan for a fan lead opening drive. If an RMU fan wins that contest, it would be the greatest troll job in football today.

Stonehill - Baby Steps, little Skyhawk.

Last Season: 4-8

After 2024 went down the toilet in the same manner that Taylor Farms lettuce does, the Skyhawks go 4-8 and there is some hope for them. Not a ton of hope, but there is some.

Non-Conference: vs. Bryant, at New Hampshire, at UMass, at Ohio, at Sacred Heart [Score: 7.75/10]

Conference: Home - Duquesne, Mercyhurst, CCSU, Wagner; Road - New Haven, Long Island, Robert Morris [Score: 7/10]

Goal for the Season: Getting three of the top four in the coaches poll is huge for them, but the biggest priority is surviving that early season five game road trip. If they can win two of those games, it would be a massive success for them.

New Haven - Welcome to the Big Time!

Last Season: 5-5

A literal last second leap into Division I left the Chargers scrambling for a schedule and it gave them 10 games and a perfectly even 5-5 season. Three of those losses came against conference members, so there is room for improvement here.

Non-Conference: vs. Marist, at South Dakota State, vs. Brown, at Merrimack, at Austin Peay [Score: 7.5/10]

Conference: Home - Stonehill, Duquesne, Long Island; Road - Robert Morris, CCSU, Wagner, Mercyhurst [Score: 6.75/10]

Goal for the Season: Three of their first four games are at home, so winning here is important because that lone road game... gulp Yeah, they're going to be roasted, toasted and waffled.

Merrimack - The Lone Warrior

Last Season: 4-8

The last remaining independent program left, Merrimack had had a roller coaster start (Which included a win over CCSU) that imploded in a five game losing skid. With Sacred Heart in a new home, they'll have to find anything for games... at least the Yankee is still alive, right?

Home: Rhode Island, New Haven, New Hampshire, Wagner, Sacred Heart [Score: 6/10]

Goal for the Season: Looks like someone wants CAA membership because the Warriors have five games against the Coastal this season, which includes the season opener against league favorite Rhode Island. Winning two or three of these games might give them a chance for associate membership.

Chicago State - Soft Launch

The only team in the NEC to not play anyone in the NEC, the Cougars make their debut by taking the New Haven approach - independent for the first season. A home schedule that might be the easiest in the nation will help ease them in.

Home: Roosevelt, Kentucky Christian, Norfolk State, Fort Lauderdale, Virginia-Lynchburg [Score: 2/10]

Road: UT-Martin, Butler, Tarleton State, North Carolina A&T, Lindenwood, Southern Utah [Road: 5.75/10]

Goal for the season: Nothing less then perfection against this weak ass home schedule should be a disappointment for the Cougars... but if they can snatch a road win or two? Hey, that means 2027 might be a breakout season for them.

This Week in Canadian Sportsball (Week 10 Edition)

Welcome back to the show that could end at any time, but won't. We begin with our final home opener of the season.

Calgary (4-4) [Juggernaut Offense, Charmin Soft Defense] at Toronto (3-4) [FINALLY Home]

With The Odyssey being the biggest movie of the year (so far...), it made poetic sense that the team with the Greek inspired nickname went on one themselves while their home field hosted the World Cup. In those seven games (4 actual road games and 3 'home away from home' games), the Argos went 3-4. What do they do now that they're home again? Promptly shit all over themselves to the tune of 5 turnovers (1 fumble and 4 picks from QB Chad Kelly... YIKES!). Normally, this would doom a team... but they're facing the Charmin Soft Calgary Defense, which means the Argos still have a chance. Also, the Juggernaut offense faltered. For the first time this season, Vernon Adams threw an interception... in fact, he threw two picks! A last second field goal from Toronto allowed them to escape the home opener with a win and now they hit the road (again) to face Edmonton while the Stamps return home to face division rival B.C. next week.

Ottawa (0-7) [Clown Show... Clown Show] at Saskatchewan (5-2) [Still the Champs, BTW]

Friday Night Football brings up the prairie as the REDBLACKS (Yes, you yell the name out. Ottawa is cursed, I tells ya) try to do something... hell, anything to stop this losing streak against the defending champion Roughriders and the champs put on a show for their fans as Trevor Harris tortured his old squad to the tune of 401 passing yards and 2 touchdowns with a receiving corps that still has one of their best receivers (KeeSean Johnson... note the spelling, people) and a group that was basically built on duct tape, Gorilla Glue and two cardboard boxes. Once he was done, it was time for Touchdown Tommy to appear... Tommy Stevens scored another three touchdowns this week (his offensive line is going to eat well this week. The broadcasters mentioned that for every touchdown Tommy scores, he gifts the members of the offensive line a box of doughnuts. This means either a mom and pop bakery is alive thanks to him OR a Tim Horton's in Regina is raking it in).

Congrats, Ottawa. You have now set a record of futility that hasn't been matched since the Shreveport Pirates were in the league... that was the mid 90s. You guys are fucking awful. All jokes aside, they another chance to snap that skid as they go to Winnipeg next week while the champs go eastward to play Hamilton.

(BTW, fun stat time: The longest losing streak in Canadian Football history is 51 straight losses by the... let's see if I get this right... the St. James Rods, a junior football team, from 1979 to 1985. Gotdamn, that is sad.)

Edmonton (6-2) [Brock Lesnar] at Montreal (7-1) [Oba Femi]

The early game in the double header had a heavyweight title bout feel to it as the Alouettes look to get payback against the Elks, the only team to beat them so far. It's fair to say that Montreal got their pound of flesh and then some... Davis Alexander (The Great) had a master class performance, throwing for 4 touchdowns (all to his top two targets, BTW) and running in another one. Edmonton tried to stay in the game, but the Alouettes were a machine and nothing was going to stop them. Their reward? A week off! Montreal gets the bye week while Edmonton returns home to lick their wounds before playing Toronto.

Hamilton (3-5) [Still Longing for (Bo) Levi] at BC (2-5) [The Return of Mr. Rourke]

While the Tiger-Cats were still relying on their third stringer in Harrison Frost, the Lions had their starting QB return in Nathan Rourke, who came back into form with 370 yards in the air, which included an 82 yard bomb to Justin McInnis. Hamilton fought hard and pushed the ball into field goal range... only for Marc Liegghio to get the dreaded shanks at the worst possible time. With this win, the Lions get themselves into playoff contention as they head to Calgary next week while the Tiger-Cats try to figure out what's going wrong here before Saskatchewan comes to town.

This Week in Canadian Sportsball (Week 9 Edition)

Here's an idea that hasn't been done - a CFL styled Sportsball series. Since I don't have the ability to make videos in the same manner (Not to mention that the CFL might frown on that idea), this is going to be in text form. Also, this is just an experiment so bear with me here.

BC (1-5) [Can they get a QB, for King's sake?] at Winnipeg (4-3) [MID!]

The week opens up at Princess Auto Stadium with the Blue Bombers, the definition of mid (Cue the MJF 'Mid' clip) and the Lions, who are the MASH unit of the CFL right now (No seriously. Look at the injury report.)

One of the big issues for the Lions has been lack of decent quarterback play, especially with their starter Nathan Rourke, out after hurting his shoulder. Their back-up QB, Chace Brice, was absolute booty cheeks in the Week 7 loss to Edmonton, throwing 4 picks (BOO! You Stink!). Enter... Kaidon Salter? Well, I'll be damned. He did mop up duty against Toronto last week, throwing for 121 yards. Not bad for the former Colorado and Liberty guy.

As for Winnipeg, it's been an up and down season for them and one thing you'll notice - they can't stop the run (2nd worst rush defense in the CFL heading into this week). Needless to say, the Lions had a game plan, and that was... RUN. THE. BALL. Which they did to the tune of 377 yards, mostly split up between Salter (160 rushing yards along 96 passing yards and a touchdown pass) and Zander Horvath (191 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns). Winnipeg just couldn't score touchdowns - they got four field goals from Sergio Castillo, but only one touchdown. With this win, the Lions now have hope in the West Division at 2-5 before they host Hamilton in the second half of Saturday's double dip next week. Meanwhile, the Blue Bombers get the week off to lick their wounds.

Montreal (7-1) [RIP. AND. TEAR.] at Ottawa (0-7) [The CFL's Jobber]

Friday Night Football is a thing and this week's edition brings us our biggest mismatch of the week where the high powered juggernaut in Montreal heads down the road to face an absolutely hapless Ottawa team.

Montreal is a buzz saw on offense, lead by QB Davis Alexander (The Great). He leads the league in passing yards. On the ground, you have Travis Theis. The former South Dakota guy has been on a tear as of late, scoring a touchdown in the last five games, capped off with a 196 yard day against Hamilton. Davis' favorite targets? Tyson Philpot and Tyler Snead, the top two receivers in the league. In fact, Philpot tied a record on Friday - fastest to get 1000 receiving yards.

Ottawa? They can't do anything right, and it shows. They kept in the ballpark in the first half, but Montreal's high powered offense took over and crushed what little hopes the RedBlacks had. Ottawa falls to 0-8 as they head west to face the defending Grey Cup champion Roughriders next week. Montreal heads home to face Edmonton in a potential Grey Cup preview.
