ZhuAudio Z3 / BirdDance Z3 Review : So close to being great.

Disclaimers: Product was sent to me by BirdDance for review. BirdDance does not see this review before I post it. All opinions are my own.

I was contacted by BirdDance last month and was offered a chance to review the Z3. Prior to them contacting me, I had never heard of the brand and was curious what they had to offer for around the 50 USD price range.

Unboxing

The unboxing experience for this price is rather good. Unlike some brands which just include a basic cable and a few ear tips BirdDance has included some decent accessories.

List of Accessories

  1. Carry Case
  2. 3 sets of ear tips + Foam tips

The case itself is made well, but one complaint I have is that its slightly smaller then I would like it. With just the IEMs the case does become slightly annoying to close. If you have a dongle DAC it would a very tight squeeze.

The tips themselves are of decent quality. Three sets are 1 set of liquid silicone tips, 1 set of narrow bore tips and, 1 set of wide boar tips and 1 set of foam tips. The foam tips included here are of good quality and unlike come form time that come with brands like KZ the tips are not premoulded.

Overall the quality of the accessorizes is good for this price.

Build quality

IEM

A lot of IEMs in this price range are often just full resign built or a metal face plate and the test is made of resign. So its very refreshing to see am IEM in this price range that is completely made of metal. The body of the IEM it made of a stainless steel and has a very reflective finishing.

As most all metal IEMs do these have a decent wait to them. The overall build is very good and does not feel cheap in the slightest. But because of the glossy finishing the IEM does attract fingerprints rather easily.

Cable

The build quality of the cable is average for this price and nothing special. Its a 2 core twist that has a plastic covering around the cables. This covering makes the cable feel slightly on the cheaper side. This cable does have memory too and does get tangled very easily. The ear hooks are slightly stiffer then I would like it but are still comfortable. I didn’t have any issued with microphonics as well when the cables rubs against my shirt.

The hardware on the cable go decent. The 3.5mm jack covering is made of metal as well as the Y split.

Its a decent cable. I would have wanted something that feels slightly less plasticky.

Comfort

I had no issues with comfort with this set. They are not that big and sit well in my ear. No discomfort after long listening sessions as well. I think this will be a good set for people with smaller ears too.

Sound

I would describe these as a warm sounding IEM. The mids are boosted to make the vocals sound more impactful. This set would be a good option for someone looking for a more vocal forward set that doesn’t have peaky or harsh treble.

Bass

This is not a bassy set. The mid bass is punchy and has good decay. The layering and detail on the bass notes is about average for the price, nothing special. The area of impact is also good. The sub bass rumble is not very present tho. The sub bass feels weak and on some tracks it is very easy to tell.

Bass tuning on this set leans more towards mid bass slam and the sub bass rumble feels lackluster.

This is not a bass head set. The bass on this set is good and does not muddy up the lower mids.

Overall bass presentation is decent.

Mids

This is a more vocal forward set. The upper mids are boosted so that both male and female vocals both sound bodied. Both male and female vocals sound rich and full. When it comes to the upper mids this set can sound slightly unnatural and with a slight metallic timber. With most tracks and singers its not a problem but with some female singers who can sign really high, this becomes obvious.

With stringed instruments this sets handles then well. Sometimes they can come off as slightly unnatural sounding.

Even with those problems I mentioned I would still recommend this set to someone looking for a vocal forward set.

Treble

The treble on this set it cut down a bit. This is not for treble heads and this is a very relaxed and laid back listening experience. You can easily listen to this set for hrs without any fatigue. But one problem with cutting the treble this much is that the technical performance of this set takes a hit.

Sometimes the lack of treble energy can make this set kinda sound muted. Details in the treble region are presented will but don’t stand out as much. It can be hard to distinguish between instrument on a more complex track.

The treble presentation on this set is laid back and relaxed. More suited for laid back listening rather then analytical listening.

Technical Performance

The technical performance is on par with DD IEMs at this price range. Stereo separation is good with with channels being clearly defined. I would describe this sound stage as stereo rather then holographic. Separation between instruments is good but distinguishing between multiple instruments and singer can he slightly hard so more complex tracks.

Staging is about average for the price. You don’t get the “In the deal feeling” with this set. Stage width is decent but the height is not as good.

Overall the performance is what I would expect for a DD IEM in this price range.

Specification

Driver Configuration: Dual dynamic driver setup

Frequency Response Range: 10 Hz – 50,000 Hz

Impedance: 32 Ω

Sensitivity: 125 dB/Vrms (@ 1 kHz)

Pros and Cons

Pros

  1. Excellent build quality
  2. Good accessorize
  3. Good for vocals
  4. Fatigue free listening experience

Cons

  1. Upper treble can sometimes sound unnatural
  2. Detail retrieval is slightly below average for the price

Conclusion

The build quality of this this is amazing for the price. I can only think of a few sets that as well built as this. This is a warm set so the treble energy is takes down a decent but which I personalty am not a fan of. Sometimes the treble does come off as slightly muted.

This set is great for someone who wants a more laid back and fatigue free listening experiences. But people who are looking for a more details or brighter sounding set then I would looks for other options.

ZhuAudio Z3 / BirdDance Z3 First Impression

Disclaimers: Product was sent to me by BirdDance for review. BirdDance does not see this review before I post it. All opinions are my own.

I was contacted by BirdDance last month and was offered a chance to review the Z3. Prior to them contacting me, I had never heard of the brand and was curious what they had to offer for around the 50 USD price range.

The first thing I noticed is the build quality of the IEMs themselves. They are extremely well built for the price. Full metal shells that have a nice weight to them. They do not feel cheap or poorly built at all.

The design on the faceplate is simple and elegant. Not overdone at all. The ZhuAudio name is pressed into the metal faceplate, which means it will be rubbing off, which is an issue with some IEMs.

The cable is decent for the price. It's a 2-core twisted cable. The outer plastic covering does feel a little on the cheap side. The ear hooks are slightly stiffer than I would like, but it's not bad at all. The hardware on the cable is decent.

As for sound quality, I won't go too much into that here. Will be writing a full review soon with all things related to sound quality in a week or so. But it is a warmer, more vocal forward IEM. Mids are boosted, and the treble energy is taken down a little. In terms of bass, it's more mid-bass focused rather than sub-bass.

Overall for 50 USD, these are a great deal. The build quality of the IEMs, plus 3 sets of eartips, plus foam tips, and an included carrying case make this a great deal for around 50 USD.

If you have any questions about this set, let me know and I will try to answer them.

Thanks for reading.

What made y'all switch to IEM and can you go back to using wireless stuff from SONY or BOSE?

I decided to try out IEM around 2021 just out of pure curiosity. Started with some rando KZ set. Been using IEMs every since. I had tried out wireless stuff like the XM5s and stuff the with the stock tuning they sound meh.

For me sound quality is the most important thing so I'm stick with wires lol.

What's something you wish you knew before you started your audiophile journey?

For those of us who have been on the audiophile journey for a while now, we have spent a lot of money on gear that we ended up not liking or that was slightly better but not worth the price at all.

One thing I learned early on in my journey is that there ain't one single IEMs/headphones that everyone will like, and there are sets that I think sound amazing, but others think they are meh, and vice versa.

One other thing I learned early on too is the point of diminishing returns is lower than what I expected. When I started, I assumed it was around 800-1000 USD, but now for me personally, I think it's around 350-400 USD.

To all my budget ballers: Which is the best budget IEM you have used. (Sub 100 USD)

Ever since the chi-fi boom happened, there have been a lot of amazing budget IEMs to come out over the past few years. Some of my favorites are the KZ PRX, Simgot EW300, and Artti T10.

But I wanted to know y'all's opinion on which IEM offers the most value for money in the sub-100 USD price range.

What was your first IEM and what is your current favourite IEM?

I got into this hobby about 5 years ago around when the chifi boom started and tons of brands started making IEMs for cheap. My first ever IEM was a KZ set. I have no idea what the name of the set was. Kz makes too many sets I can't find the exact one online.

I got it because I had never seen an IEM before and it looked cool at the time. Plus it being dirt cheap at the time helped too.

After getting my first set I actually did my research and went down the rabbit hole lol.

I have tired soo many sets now and have been to audiophile events to try aout more sets. My current daily driver set is the letshuoer s12 ultra.

So I was wondering what IEM made you go down the rabbit hole .

AUDIOCULAR- AURA Review- Good DAC for a great Price

I decided to get the AURA after seeing ads online and some reviews about the DAC. The DAC is priced lower than similar DACs with the CS43131 chip, and the main reason I got it was to see if the DAC was worth the money or just a badly made product

I ordered the DAC from Concept Kart, and my experience with them was good. I received the product 3 days after ordering, and the delivery experience was smooth.

Unboxing

The unboxing was basic but did come with an Audiocular-branded case and the USB-A to C adapter and the DAC itself. The quality of the case and adapter is decent, and they are a nice addition for the price.

Audiocular AURA

On first impressions the DAC is well built and does not seem cheap at all. It feels slightly less premium than something like the FiiO KA11, but that’s mainly because of the 3.5 mm end of the DAC feeling more hollow. There is an LED and a button on the DAC. The LED glows red to show it is connected and cyan/blue to indicate music playback.

I tested it mainly with my phone (Xiaomi 14) and my desktop PC running Windows 11, and it worked fine. One thing that is kind of annoying about the DAC is that you need to connect a headphone/IEM for the DAC to show up on your device. Other DACs like the FiiO KA11 would just show up even if no output was connected.

The sound of the DAC out of the box is a very flat and almost boring sound. After messing around with the presets, I managed to bring out more detail, and the resolution is more pronounced. The PEQ, filters, and adjustments you can do on the app are very good and not really seen at this price, but I feel like most beginner audiophiles may get overwhelmed or confused with the amount of customization offered here.

AUDIOCULAR APP

One of the main selling features of the DAC is the app that lets you control all the features, and for the most part the app is well made. But there is just one thing that annoys me, and that’s needing to make an account to use the app. To do anything on the app, like use the PEQ, you need to log in. Now there is a feature on the app that lets you use presets from the community, and I can understand why you would need an account for that. But the fact you need to make an account to use the PEQ is just stupid, as it's one of the main advertised features.

This is very obvious info farming from the user. I hope Audiocular listens to the community and changes this.

Conclusion

The DAC itself is priced very competitively and competes with other DACs at this price range, like the FiiO KA11, Shanling UA Mini, and Jcally JM 20 Max, while offering more features like PEQ. But things like needing to make an account to use most, if not any, of the features on the app cheapen the experience in my opinion. Overall a good product but does need some improvements.

Astell&Kern - AK UW100MKII Review

First and foremost, if anyone is buying anything for HZ, it's because they care about sound quality, and I can say these TWS sound amazing. I have not tried many TWS/IEMs under the 15K INR price range, but these sound better than my XM5, which cost more than 25K INR.

Of course the XM5s have world-class ANC, and the transparency modes are amazing in their own way, but just in terms of sound quality, these are better (in my opinion).

Build quality is great on both the TWS and the case. The size may be a problem for some, as they are, well, let's just say, BIG BOYZ. Some people may find them uncomfortable, and the case is on the bigger side as well.

Sound:

This set does have a brighter tuning. The overall detail presentation is very good. Instrument separation and imaging and great and layering are good too. For the higher frequencies this set is really good as even the detail in the range is conveyed very well. But sibilance is a issue. One some tracks it is very noticeable.

The mid range on the set is slightly recessed. Both male and female vocals lack that body to them and this set can come off as dry and dead. The sibilance issue is present here too where female and some male singers can come off as very shouty and unpleasant on some tracks.

The bass is where most people will have issues with this set. The presentation is very lean, as expected from a single full range BA. Mid bass lacks punch or impact and the decay is poor. The sub bass range is done better and the rumble is still present.

The app allows you to mess with the EQs and stuff, so even if you don't like how they sound out of the box, you can always EQ them to your liking.

The app not being on the Play Store is a bummer but not a deal breaker in my opinion, as you can download an APK online from a trusted site. But iOS users may have more of an issue with this. HZ said they will update us on the status of the app as soon as they can.

Overall considering the price these are a good option for people looking for a brighter and super rich and detailed listening experience and may not be suited for someone looks for a more vocal forward or bassy set.

Update:

The AK Control App is now available for android 15 and it works great

I did have an issue where one of the buds would not connect to my phone and it was flashing a red light. I got it to connect by resetting the buds and pairing them to my phone again. Odd issue but it only happened once

KZ PRX - Great performance for the price

I have been using planar IEMs for a while now. My first ever IEM was the 7hz dioko. After that I kinda fell in love with planar IEMs and have tested a lot of them. Stuff like the MP145 , s12, s12 pro , kiwi ears aether etc.

But I had never tried a planar from Kaz before. I have heard about their PR series but never really bothered to tried it out until I decided to get the PRX for a good price on ali express.;

Build Quality:

The build quality for the PRX is about average for the price really. It is similar to a lot of others KZ IEMs for around this price range. The faceplate in made of metal and decorative vents. The faceplates also has KZs typical industrial design which I do like but I don't some people don't.

Overall build quality is fine really. It's good for the price.

Accessories:

Standard KZ unboxing. That standard KZ cable plus a set of KZ tips. Nothing much to say about these really, they just get the job done and nothing more.

Sound:

Honestly I wasn't expecting much for this set really. It is a planar IEM that costs around 35 USD so I didn't have high hopes but I was presently surprised.

The tuning on this set is more of a U shape. The treble energy on this set is surprisingly tame. It's not shouty or sibilant to my ears at all. The mid range slightly recessed but both male and female vocals come are still well represented.

This is not a bassy set but more leans into the sub bass rumble rather than the mid bass slam. This is typical planar bass which is fast and transient. Layers for the bass is also very good for this price. Area of impact is also good for the price.

In terms of technical performance this IEM preforms very well for its price. The preserved 3D stage I about average for the price with good stage width but decent height. Imaging and seperation are where is set stands out to be tho.

Both are excellent for this price. I can easily identify and separate multiple instrument and singers in the background with this set.

Overall in really liked this set. I haven't tried any of KZs other single planar IEMs but this PRX is a great set for the price.

One thing I would like to mention is that this set from my testing does scale with power. I ran them from my TRN Black Pearl on a 4.4mm connection from my testing. If you are looking to buy this set I would recommend getting a decent dac along with it.

Final rating: 8/10 (Good tuning and great technical performance for the price )
