I’ve never really liked my body structure, but I’m trying to stop focusing on what I can’t change and make the most of what I’ve got. Still a long way to go.

Tooth 31 Second Opinion

Hello! I’m looking for a second opinion on whether treatment on tooth #31 was necessary and whether the current situation could have been anticipated.

My general dentist initially told me that my wisdom teeth and tooth #31 should be extracted. I then saw an oral surgeon for a consultation. The oral surgeon told me tooth #31 looked fine and only removed my wisdom teeth and the second molar on my left side.

Later, I returned to my dentist for a couple of cavities. The dentist that previously said tooth #31 needed to be extracted told me he now recommends doing a crown on it. I had no pain, sensitivity, or other symptoms with tooth #31 at that time, but I agreed to the crown based on the recommendation.

After the crown was placed, I began experiencing throbbing pain in that tooth. I went back to the dentist, and now I am being told tooth #31 will need a root canal.

Based on the attached X-ray, did tooth #31 appear to need a crown in the first place? Did the oral surgeon's assessment that the tooth was healthy seem reasonable?

Looking at the X-ray, is there evidence that the tooth already had a problem that could have led to a root canal regardless of the crown? The dentist initially told me that no root canal would be required on the tooth.

I understand no one can diagnose me over the internet, but I'd appreciate opinions on whether the crown shouldn’t have been done in the first place.
Thank you.
