Compost it or no?

Compost it or no?

This bad boy was up in a high space above our deck for 2 years and saw multiple families/seasons. It fell during a bad storm recently and is pretty effed. Huck it into the pile?

Housing situation. Need advice TW: self-harm/suicide

As the title suggests- this is a darker situation.

My wife and I have rented our current spot (in the largest Midwest city) for 2 years. We love our place. Hate our property managers. Love the owners… the owner of the property is friends with the owner of the property management company.

When we first moved in the house was.. not clean. There was what appeared to be ketchup or blood on the floor (it was red so I really think ketchup not blood which turns black from my understanding? Could be wrong but do want to call that out!). Dirt/accumulation was caked on the blinds and shutters for the utility closets and all closets/doors in general, the bath tub had deep set stains that we were told were being cleaned when we moved in. It just was somewhat of a mess.

When we toured the property we were told the person just moved out and that everything was being cleaned. It was just listed and we wanted to move fast is what we were told. We loved it and signed the lease. We were in a situation where we had a 1 day turn around and had to get in there quick. My wife gave birth 6 months earlier and we didn’t have any help with the move. Our move out date and move-in date were both the last day of the month.

We hired movers, got everything out and then got to the new spot and it was still dirty as hell. No change at all just more dust. We called the prop manager they said they’d send cleaners over the next day. We let them know our house is full of boxes and furniture so a cleaning would be wasted at the current moment but that we would like to schedule something for a week out. They agreed. We settled, a week passed, no cleaning. We reached out a few times but they never sent anyone. We also had a host of other issues like our toilets not flushing even though the water was on because the pipes were so clogged, the floor vent covers being too small or too big (not huge but again we had a crawling 6 mo the old at the time so not necessarily safe either), we had a non functioning HVAC system and we moved in in June. It took over a month to get our stuff handled. But they fixed it. Never cleaned though.

This was over 2 years ago now. Our property managers have continued to be useless and take months to address any issue. The most recent being a leak on coming from the ceiling beneath our daughter’s bedroom into our guest room… there’s no bathroom or running water in her room so a leak there is super concerning. The window was also leaking. Still over a month before anyone showed. They seemed to have fixed the ceiling leak but the window still gushes.

ANYWAY… here’s where it gets dark so please be advised TRIGGER WARNING.

We’ve become friends with our neighbors. We know they were close with the previous tenant and we received a piece of his mail recently. We bumped into them outside and I asked “Hey do you still talk to X?” Their face was perplexed and somewhat concerned. We could tell she wasn’t sure how to respond so she said uncomfortably something to the effect of “well he’s in heaven now.” We both looked at each other initially like “aww man I’m sorry” then my wife and I both had the “wait wtf?! Did he die in the house??” Look with each other so we asked as tenderly as possible. Turns out he did. Our neighbor the. Said “they found him the same day. It was really scary and sad”. So we of course asked- “did he kill himself in here?” …. Yes

Absolutely heartbreaking. Also unfortunately- where and how, and did we unknowingly clean (what we could - there are still stains) the remains of a suicide scene? Like what in the actual fuck. We looked him up and he died 2 months before we moved in. We also think he owned the property before our current owner but aren’t certain. So the timeline really is sensible. It seems like they bought this house at a discount, got the keys and then handed them over to us.

Now. What do I do? We love our house and our landlord. We don’t want to move but this feels illegal at worst but highly highly immoral considering we weren’t made aware of any of this. Who knows if we would have proceeded with the lease. We had a six month old in here. In that. That’s so unsanitary and dangerous.

Im experiencing two emotions primarily- first a deep deep sadness for the person who was in so much pain in the home that we have found so much comfort in, and second a deep anger and sense of mistrust towards our property manager and now the owner of our home.

What do I do?

Pictures are of the property at the time of move-in
