When your grays get a $85 cover charge…

Hey everyone!

I’m looking for some honest feedback because I feel like quite a dumbass on a situation that happened yesterday. I totally own my part in this, I’m definitely a people pleaser to my own detriment. I hate making people feel uncomfortable, and I probably should have asked more questions when things started taking longer than expected.

I’m 44 and have been getting partial highlights for over 20 years. I recently went to a new salon that my daughters recommended. When I booked, the price was $133 for a partial highlight, cut, and style. I already had to pay when I booked half when I scheduled.

When I sat down, I had a very young, sweet stylist who seemed a little unsure of herself. Another senior stylist came over to look at my hair and talk through things with her. While making small talk, I said something like, “Yeah, just a partial highlight to touch up these roots, the grays are starting to peek out.”

In my mind, “touching up the roots” meant foiling my root regrowth like I’ve had done for years. I didn’t realize until checkout that a separate single process base color/root touch up had been added for $85 on top of the partial highlight service.

The appointment ended up taking about 3.5 hours. By the end, I was anxious to leave, so when she asked if I wanted my hair styled/curled, I said no even though the style was included in the original service.

When I checked out, my total was $155 instead of the $133 I had expected. And I was like oh they probably charge more for the toner but I didn’t realize that the total was actually $218! because they had already charged the initial $66.

I feel so silly for not speaking up, but I genuinely didn't know an additional $85 service was being performed. There wasn't a conversation along the lines of, “Do you also want your grays covered with a base color? That's an additional $85,” or anything letting me know my total was going to change from $133 to $218.

I’m not looking to get something for free, and I don't want to be unfair to the stylist. She was very sweet. I’m just uncomfortable paying an additional $85 for a service I didn't realize I was agreeing to.

I feel like a fool so please be kind. I’m just trying to get some advice on what I should do if anything maybe I should just chalk it up to a misunderstanding and go from there?

Help - what to do with last stray cat (Cumberland, MD)

Hi all,

I’m looking for some help for a tough situation we’re in with a local stray. We live in a rural area with a small local colony. We already successfully trapped another mama cat and her kittens into a rescue, but there was one last cat left that we really wanted to help before we move. My daughter has fallen in love with her. She used to be very standoffish, but she’s warmed up to us and she loves being petted now and completely relies on us for her morning and evening feedings. She does her own cat things during the day but we always see her in the evening and mornings.

Here’s where it gets sticky, we finally managed to bring her inside into a large catio/garage setup, but she is really struggling with the transition. She’s been crying constantly, isn't taking to the litter box yet, and seems miserable being confined. She honestly just seems miserable, barely eating now.

I honestly don’t know what to do. And to make matters harder she might be pregnant. Because we live in a rural area with long waitlists, her spay appointment isn't for several more weeks. I’m willing to take her with us, but I am worried that she is not acclimating to being confined at all. This has been going on for two weeks, but I’m also torn because she has become so reliant on us and I’ve already talked to the people purchasing our house, I was hoping they might be open to feeding her if I got her spayed. They told me they do not want any cats on their property and they will be dealt with accordingly. She just seems overly stressed in her confinement and since we’re moving, so she’s going to be out of her area that she’s familiar. I’m just at a loss.

Edited to add: She is not using the litter box. I’ve even tried to mix it with dirt and just using a litter box filled with dirt. Any suggestions would be great..

Does pre signing closing documents mean buyers get early possession?

Hello,

I’m just looking for some feedback/advice.
We’re selling our home and scheduled to close on August 24. Because we’re moving to temporary housing out of state, our title company arranged for us to sign our closing documents earlier on August 21.

We will still be living in the house untilAugust 23. Our temporary housing doesn’t begin until then, and our understanding has always been that possession transfers to the buyers at closing Monday.

Our agent is now telling us that because we arranged to sign early, the buyers should be able to move in that weekend. We cannot accommodate that. We still need the house through Sunday, and I’m also just not comfortable with belongings being moved into the house or garage before the sale has actually closed.

So I’m trying to understand this. Does our signing early on Friday somehow change the possession date or give the buyers a right to moving in before Monday’s closing? That is what my agent is telling me but I’m just trying to not make back to back six hour round trip drives on Sunday and Monday.

I’m frustrated because we specifically agreed to the August 24 closing date when we signed an extension because that was the move in date for our temporary housing, and the only reason we are signing early is because we’ll be out of state Monday. I want to make sure I’m not misunderstanding something. Thank you so much!

Would you allow a pet sitter in a longer term rental? [Virginia, USA]

Hi all,
We are going to be renting an entire Airbnb for about three months as temporary housing while our house is being built. The host approved our pets, two cats and a dog.

We also prepaid and pre planned a vacation last year before selling our house and needing temporary housing. Our vacation is about a month into our stay. Our dog is coming with us and rather than board the cats because it's already a big adjustment with the move, I'd like to hire a professional pet sitter to stop by once a day to feed them, scoop litter, and spend a little time with them.
The sitter will not be staying overnight.

I am planning to ask the host and would absolutely get permission first. I just wanted to get feedback from hosts before I ask because I don't want to be the annoying guest asking for something most hosts would consider unreasonable.

I’m just trying to get a general consensus of how most hosts feel about a pet sitter. Would it be okay with a pet sitter briefly coming into the property once a day while we are away? Thanks!

Please Help - I want to do what’s best for everyone

We are taking the mama cat to be spayed tomorrow morning. We finally got her safely into the trap, but now two of her kittens are climbing on the trap and crying. The little tuxedo girl is pressing her face against her mom through the trap. My daughter is crying, and honestly, so am I. I am gutted by this entire process.

I know spaying her is the right thing to do, but watching this is absolutely heartbreaking. Her appointment is at 8:30 tomorrow morning.
Please tell me we're doing the right thing. What will her kittens do while she's gone? They are about 13 weeks old. There are four kittens total, and they all seem very bonded to their mom.

We're trying desperately to catch the kittens too because we're moving soon and taking Sylvie (mom cat) with us. I have contacted around 50 rescues with no luck and caring for this family for the past seven weeks. The kittens have been living in our garage, and we can't leave them behind when we move. We're trying everything we can to find them safe homes, but right now I just feel like I'm breaking apart a family that loves each other.
Has anyone else been through this? Did the kittens and mom reunite afterward? I could really use some reassurance tonight. I feel more like a giant pos.

Help Kittens Gaithersburg, MD

Hi!
We have a mama cat that was abandoned by our neighbors. We started feeding her and a few weeks later came the kittens. There are 4 sweet kittens, 3 boys and 1 girl. We just trapped them all and they are about 12 weeks. Mama has been spayed and vaccinated. We are moving and she is coming with us. I can’t leave the kittens behind because they have only known us and before being trapped, preferred to sit in the garage and demand their meals. I won’t leave them. But I am burnt out. I have called so many rescues. They are all full. The only place I found was the Montgomery County Animal Shelter and they can’t take them until October 9th. I will be across the country by then. I don’t know what to do. I also can’t keep them. I’m taking mama, but I really don’t know what to do. I feel like I’m failing them.

I’d post a picture but my phone isn’t cooperating. There are two tuxedos, one black, and one gray/white

Advice on extension

UPDATE: email from our agent:

I reached out to the buyer's agent, and they did the extension till August 21st in the hope that this gives you more time. We have been under contract since 6/11/26.   The agent did say they could close on August 7th per the contract. He felt pretty strongly that he could meet that date. (He actually called me back and stated the August 7th date.)  The problem is the buyer purchasing your home has a buyer purchasing their house. It's a chain reaction. If they meet the August 7thdate, you will be in default if you do not close.  I recommend signing the extension till August 21st.  Are you using any of the proceeds from your sale to go toward the purchase of your new home?  Also, what happens if your new home is not completed by 10/31/26? So much can happen when a new home is under construction. I completely understand not wanting to move twice but I don't see any way around it at this point- especially if they could meet the August 7th settlement date. Please call me so we can discuss this in more detail.

*I just want to reiterate that we never said that we wouldn’t make the August 7 closing. It was just when the extension came through that we were like hey maybe we don’t want to sign this. I’m kind of taken aback by her email and again we do not have an FHA appraisal ordered as of today 7/26. And the buyers were contingent on selling their house and using the proceeds to buy our house so just any insight would be really appreciated because I’m kind of low-key panicking and really upset right now*

Hi everyone,

Our home is under contract. We signed at the beginning of June. The buyers have a home sale contingency, and we have been through several delays related to them selling their home. They have still not ordered the FHA appraisal for our house as of today.

August 7th was the original settlement date.

The buyers have now asked us to sign an extension that pushes settlement from the 7th to August 21st. They can’t close on their own home until August 14.

We are not trying to breach the contact. We just do not want to extend the closing date to August 21.

My realtor proposed that If the buyers are willing to sign a rent back agreement allowing us to remain in the home until our new build is finished towards the end of October, if we would be willing to do that? We don’t even know if they can do that.

At the same time, our circumstances have changed since we signed the contract. Since the builder on our new home pushed us back to late October, extending our closing to August 21 would mean moving twice, paying for temporary housing and storage. We do not have to sell our house in order to buy so we were thinking we would just relist in September if we can get out of this.

Is it unreasonable for us to decline signing the extension unless we can reach a written rent back agreement that lets us stay until our new home is finished?

I feel so bad for the buyers and guilt. We have waited for weeks to find out what is going on with their sale. My agent said if we don’t sign, we would be in breach. But wouldn’t that just mean we didn’t agree to the extension?

Has anyone been in a similar situation? How did it play out?

Thank you!

Advice on “hang tight” from agent

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from anyone who has been through a similar experience.
We listed our home and received two offers. We chose the offer that was contingent on the buyers selling their home because it gave us more time to find a house of our own, and they were willing to work with us on a rent back. We agreed to August 7 as our closing date.

We signed the contract in early June and didn't hear anything for a couple of weeks. I kept checking the buyers' listing, and it remained active. The market where we're moving is extremely competitive. We kept getting outbid and homes selling for above what we were comfortable spending, so we decided on a new build instead. The new construction won't be finished until the end of October.

Earlier this week, our agent called to say the buyers received an offer on their home. I asked about the rent back, and she said she would reach out to them. I also have it in writing that they were willing to do a rent back.

Some of the difficulty during this process has been communication. We hired this agent to sell our home, and she offered to help us buy our next one, but she stopped returning calls, texts, and emails when we were trying to schedule showings, so we ended up getting a different agent to represent us as buyers.

My husband called our agent for an update yesterday. She called back and said the buyers' agent told us to "hang tight" because they are dealing with appraisal issues related to outbuildings on their property, and their closing may be delayed.

This is where I'm confused. My agent says that is all she knows, but I'm struggling with what "hang tight" means in this situation. We asked for clarification, and she said, “that’s all I have for right now.”
Should I still be planning for an August 7 closing? Does "there may be a delay" mean a few days, a few weeks? Our contract also says it becomes void if closing doesn't happen by August 7.

I'm trying to prepare for the next month, and the uncertainty honestly is the hardest part. I'd really appreciate any insight from people who have been through something similar. I get that no one can provide exactly what will happen with any certainty. it is more that I’m just trying to understand better, so I have an idea of what to expect timeline wise.

** I did cross post this
** Also, our buyers are FHA. They waived their own inspection, but they have to do the FHA appraisal. I don’t know if that matters but just trying to give information and that has not been scheduled yet.

Mama Cat and Babies Help

Hi everyone,

I am looking for advice and some affirmation of what I need to do. Sorry for the length.

Some backstory:
Our neighbor was an elderly woman, and she had so many cats that her son fed for her. When she passed, they sold her house and her son took the stray cats with him. We thought they were all gone until we noticed a sweet little one left. She’s really young, so my daughter asked if we could feed her. She was really skittish at first but slowly started trusting us. Now she comes running when my daughter goes outside, rubs against her legs, and they've really bonded.

We are in the process of selling our house and the same night that we received an offer, Mama cat shows up with four babies. They were tiny, still nursing, and over the last several weeks they've completely taken over our garage, side porch, and backyard. We feed them on a regular schedule with wet and dry food, and this is the only home they've really known. At first, she would only bring them at night.

Our buyers had to sell their own house first, so we've had a little extra time, but I need a plan. I bought a trap, but honestly I'm overwhelmed. My husband works out of state, we're in the middle of selling our house and moving, and I've never dealt with anything like this before. And after reading this sub, I see I kind of missed a critical window of getting these kittens socialized because they’re older now.

Part of me feels like I’m betraying mama‘s trust and another part of me knows that the kittens will have a better life. I don’t think that I can just leave them behind when we move because we’re all they have known. I also know my daughter loves mama and I’m just trying to think logistically of how we could keep her because we are all she’s ever known. So my plan is to trap them all together and at least get Mama spayed, but I’m afraid that once I would release her that we will never see her again because it’s taken her so long to trust. And I’m afraid of breaking her heart and my daughter’s.

Another issue is that it isn’t that simple to just bring her with us because we have a really set in his ways, cat and a dog that has a strong prey drive. My cat stands up to my dog just fine and has shown who is in charge. Because she’s so skittish and runs, Mama sets off something in my dog. I am trying to figure out ways that I could keep them separate because I think there that is a possibility.

If you have stuck with me this long, I appreciate it. I just really want to do right by this little family. Thank you!
