Confused about Supervenience

I am not sure I entirely understand what supervenience is supposed to mean/be synonymous with. I am reading “the conscious mind” by chalmers rn and this is confusing me a lot lol.

so is supervenience the same as saying two (or more) things depend on another? For instance, could I say that if X depends on Y, X supervenes on Y? Or can I only say X supervenes on Y if X depends on Y for it to be the case that X has A property?

Basically, I think a lot of my confusion about supervenience is that it seems so similar to concepts like “X depends on Y” or “the existence of X is determined by some property of Y” and so forth that it is hard to see the utility of supervenience as a distinct term. On the other hand, I am confused as to whether something supervening on something else depends on some property of that something being involved?

My brain hurts…

(USA) Looking for Dual Degree Advice

I am about to start up college again at UMD (undergrad) after a 2/3 year gap. I already have like 90 credits Im coming in with, so I figured it may be worth it to stay a little longer (I need to do 15 credits a semester to maintain my fin aid), and I will probably need to anyways as my psych department restricts me from taking over three psych courses each semester (not that i’d want to anyways lol). I was thinking about a dual degree (as opposed to a double major because I’ll probably end up exceeding 120 credits due to initially doing psychology and getting an AA in that, then switching to philosophy, then now switching back to psych).

My question is a good degree to get if I was to go down the dual degree route. What I’d love to do is get a degree in philosophy and psychology, but this may not be so practical so was thinking about doing data science/statistics or maybe computer science. Was also very briefly considering getting a degree in social work or special ed, as I’m not very experienced in STEM (somewhat due to my homeschool background lol). Wanted to hear thoughts? Thx

CMV: Super-wealthy people shouldn’t be able to “pay” for their crimes by merely paying a fine that is small relative to their wealth

Thesis: Super-wealthy people and/or large corporations shouldn’t be able to pay fines which are small (relative to their overall wealth) to pay for their crimes.

I am so tired of hearing all these stories of rich people or huge corporations doing awful things (e.g. Nestle putting human poop in water, eBay CEO hiring people to harass and terrorize this couple that criticized them on a blog) and then merely paying some fine that is (to them) a mere inconvenience. In fact, I’d go as far as saying this kind of “punishment” is essentially so useless it’d be likely more efficient in terms of time wasting to just be honest and say the rules don’t apply as you get more and more money.

i mean, think of all the people in jail right now who may have been there for decades, who would be able to leave if they merely had more money.

If serving time in jail is merely a result of how much money you happen to have beforehand, that is not justice.

And this probably goes even deeper: having more money not just allows you to get out of jail time by enabling you to pay large fees, but also allows you better lawyers which also helps you avoid jail, and so on.

So, what would be my solution? The amount you pay in legal fees should be directly proportional to how much wealth (not just money in your bank but all your assets and whatever) you have accumulated. If you are a child of rich parents than the system would simply charge you fees according to your parents wealth. As for lawyer fees, I would be a fan of simply eliminating the private option altogether. This would even the playing field so that Jeff Bezos and Joe Shmoe would theoretically get the same lawyer.

Are listings like this on marstoy legit??

I looked a bit at the starter guide and saw marstoy was a positively reviewed store so gave them a look. I saw this huge MOC that is like 20k pieces selling for less than $500??? Is this real? Sorry i am not trying to accuse falsely or attack anyone, it just seems way too good to be true. And even if it is “real” are the parts gobricks level quality? After looking at prices on webricks I find it hard to believe they’d be that quality tbh. I’d appreciate any information as I’d be very interested if this listing is legit, thanks!

New doctor recommended MAHA influencer book, should I find new doctor?

Recently saw a new primary care physician who was actually recommended by someone I know who also has EDS. I was actually slightly hopeful going into the appointment, and actually felt pleasantly surprised by how familiar she seemed with EDS. For example, the doctor had a whole sheet of supplements commonly helpful for EDS ready to go. Although I have no idea how helpful the supplements are, the thought behind it meant a lot to me.

However, and I mean no offense to anyone who has found Casey Mean’s stuff helpful, she did recommend “Good Energy” by Casey Mean who, if you are unaware, is (in my opinion) a wellness influencer charlatan who tells people to not trust their doctors and then market “wellness products” that have little to no actual research behind them. She was also almost Trump’s pick for Surgeon General, and seems to be closely allied with/a leader within the MAGA movement. Therefore, when I was told by this physician that “Good Energy” is a “really good book,” this was honestly enough for me to seriously reconsider switching to this provider. She does seem like she genuinely cares and I am honestly happy to take all the random tests she told me to do as I am desperate for any data I can find in hopes it could help me feel better, even if there may be little evidence behind the tests lol.

So, my question is whether I should find a new doctor at this point? My gut (I think) is saying “yes” but not sure if I am overreacting. Thanks!
