Book Reports From the Abyss episode 4

As promised, though a little later than I had hoped, we return to BOOK REPORTS FROM THE ABYSS! Another two books read and locked away in that “special” section of the library where only the intensely curious or the utterly depraved come for new literature.

First up this time is Camp Blaze: Author’s Enhanced Edition by Jon Athan. This felt very much like baby’s first slasher, with all the good and bad that entails. It’s an ok story overall, but the pacing and character competence is sorely lacking throughout most of the book. The last third of the book is where it has a chance to shine; after you get through the tedium of a subpar slasher story that only really dips its toe into the extreme side of horror because of the fairly large amount of child death, you get surprised by a pretty big supernatural turn with apocalyptic implications at the end. This one was just ok and probably the weakest of Athan’s writing I’ve read so far.

Next we have Raised By a Killer: Book 1: Age 4 by Sea Caummisar. I was not prepared for the emotional disembowelment held within its pages. As previously stated, I’m a father to a little girl so this was a tough read for all the right(?) reasons. So many things throughout my read just made me want hold that little girl and tell her everything would be ok, even if she has an incredibly stupid name, but I know it’ll only get worse for her as it goes. More than likely I’ll continue on with this series just to see if the author can keep up the torture of my emotions as I try to feel sorry for a small girl while she’s jabbing her finger in the eye of a future serial murder victim. I loved this one, it hurts in all the right ways.

For next time, I’ll be reading The Swine by McHardy and Hawker and Eternal Flower of Your Soul by Klaus Kinion. I’ve heard nothing but good things about both, so I hope they live up to the hype. See you next time splatter fans!

Book Reports From the Abyss Episode 3

I’m back with another couple of reviews! And a title for this, my descent into splatterpunk and extreme horror! Welcome to Book Reports From the Abyss! For my previous two reviews just check my post history.

So first up this time is Do Not Disturb by Jon Athan. This story is proof positive for the old adage “keep it simple, stupid”. Simple premise, simple setting, simple characters, beautiful execution. This book was like Evil Dead 2016, but replace the deadites with clowns and replace the cabin with a motel, diner, and minimart. A pure brutal slasher with all the hallmarks of the genre done in viscerally fun way. I’m very excited for the sequels.

Next is Cavity by Jameson Ortiz. Cavity was… gross. Not sure what I was expecting, but showers of brown piss in a forced open mouth was not anywhere near the top of that list. This story definitely fits the splatter part of the genre. It’s like a horrible trailer park version of The Human Centipede but with ass teeth and a Splatterhouse style power fantasy at the end. It’s also incredibly short at only 44 pages for the ebook version. I didn’t hate this one, but I also can’t say I liked it. If you’re into the more gross out horror then you’ll probably enjoy this one.

Join me next time as I talk about Raised By a Killer: Book 1: Age 4 by Sea Caummisar and Camp Blaze: Author’s Enhanced Edition by Jon Athan. Just finished Raised By a Killer and I’m almost done with Camp Blaze so I should have my next one fairly soon.

Just Finished Dead Inside by Chandler Morrison

I saw someone on here had posted about this book recently and I found it at a B&N the other day and bought it to try out the prose side of EH after reading through all of the Crossed comics (except +100 still haven’t finished that). I enjoyed it, but I was a bit underwhelmed.

I understand why some people had said it reads like an edgy 14 year old’s private diary, because at times it is somewhat juvenile. However, this does also read like a pretty well done satire. It’s pretty funny, honestly. I didn’t expect as much humor as there was, but I liked it. Parts of it reminded me a little of Palahnuik, specifically Survivor, with the main character’s bleak outlook on humanity. His panic over the prospect of potentially becoming a “normal” person was hilarious.

Overall pretty good, but I was hoping for more. My next read will be an audiobook; PainSpace by Jon Athan. I’ve heard it’s short but impactful. I’m definitely open to more suggestions, audiobooks preferred but I can also do physical books.

[WP] 4 hours, 7 days a week. Thank you.

I heard this in a cut off voicemail from a robo call. What could this time mean? Is it a kind of punitive sentence, hours for an occupation? Could it be a continuous countdown or check in times? Who knows! You decide.

Just Recently Got Into Crossed

Just recently started reading the series. So far I’ve read everything up to Golden Road and all of Wish You Were Here (fucking masterpiece) and the annual that ties in and I recently also got my hands on the book pictured above (for half cover price!). Wish You Were Here is definitely my favorite other than Of the World and It’s Becoming. I really didn’t like Golden Road. None of the characters were at all relatable for me and the overall narrative felt much more cynical and at points nihilistic. I understand that part of the point of this world is its brutality and hopelessness, but Golden Road just made the cast the most awful, unsympathetic, pretentious, dickheads possible. Homo Superior was just ok. I’m wondering if I should keep going with badlands for now or should I switch over to Dead or Alive and continue badlands after?
