West Virginia

West Virginia is a constituent of the United States. It was formed from counties in Virginia that voted against separation during the Civil War and was admitted as state 35 on June 20 1863. WV is known for being the nation's most mountainous state, and for her coal mines. Ohio shares a water border with WV on the Ohio River. The state Congress meets in Charleston. A friend of mine was born in WV.

Cockatiel (bird of the month)

The cockatiel Nymphicus hollandicus is a lovely bird native to Australia. It is the smallest cockatoo, and the only member of the genus Nymphicus. Like most parrots, Cockatiels are very intelligent and can learn phrases, sound effects, and songs. Males of most breeds have a reddish-orange disk on their cheeks, while on younger males and females the disk is less visible. In captivity they live 10~15 years, in the wild, they live to 13~14 years.

Swahili

Swahili (Lugha ya Kiswahili) is a wonderful language spoken in Africa. It is a language of the Bantu group of the N-Congo family, making it related to isiZulu, siSwati, and more distantly to Yoruba and Fula. Like Fula, but unlike others of the family, Swahili is non-tonal. It is marked by heavy Arabic and Persian influence from Islamic trade (many are Muslims themselves) and from English, German, and Portuguese. It is official in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Congo-Kinshasa, and Rwanda.

Tigrinya

Tigrinya is a beautiful language spoken in Ethiopia and Eritrea by the Tigrayans and the Tigrinya, two close yet separate ethnicities. It is a Semitic language, thus making it a relative of Harari and Amharic, which are also spoken in Ethiopia, and more distantly to Arabic and Assyrian. It is written with the Ge'ez abugida.

Ohio Buckeye (Trees of Ohio)

The Ohio Buckeye Aesculus glabra is a wonderful tree native to the American continent in the Soapberry family (Sapindaceae). It is important to me as it is my state's official tree, and many of us Ohioans call ourselves Buckeyes, and so do the fans of OSU's college sports teams. The fruit is not edible, but can be strung into necklaces. The fruit contains saponins, chemicals that have bitter taste and foam when mixed in water. It has soft, pale wood and was used by the Lenape who would roll them in their hands for rheumatism. (continues in comments)

Maltese/L-Ilsien Malti

Maltese is a language and the last living dialect of Siculo-Arabic spoken on the Maltese archipelago, and in Australia. It is the only form of Arabic written in Latin script, and is an official language of the European Union. Maltese has somewhat high intelligibility with Tunisian Arabic. Like other Arabic dialects, sun consonants (X, R, D, Ż, Z, S, Ċ) change the L in il (the) to that consonant (ix-xemx, the sun/id-demm, the blood).
