Kollywood owes Tamil girls a massive apology honestly.

Coz why did an entire generation of us grow up feeling like we’re “not pretty enough” simply for looking… Tamil?!

Tamil men in cinema can be dark, older, rugged, have dad bods, look fully local.. & still become superstars. But women? Suddenly the heroine has to be fair, flawless, North-coded and look like she’s never seen Chennai summer in her life 🤷‍♀️

And don’t say “it’s just cinema” because that nonsense genuinely affected real life.

My sister used to get called “Karuppu Tamannaah”, “Karuppu Shreya” by local boys growing up. Not in a cute way. In a degrading “you’re pretty for a dark girl” way. Meanwhile these same dudes proudly compared themselves to Rajini and Vijay Sethupathi.

The misogyny + colourism combo in Tamil society needs to be studied actually!

And the saddest part? So many Tamil girls grew up internalising this. Watching heroines on screen and subconsciously understanding main character energy belongs to fair girls only 🥹

But look at the world now.

We’re literally in the era of Tamil baddies going global.
