For teachers in the MENA region, how was staff retention or redundancy this past academic year for 2025-26?
Did you experience many staff members leaving? Or witnessed colleagues being made redundant? I suspect because of the war. Other thoughts?

I’m so lost on which one of the two to go to. While I’m interested in the tranquility that Chiang Mai offers, there are just too many connecting flights to get back to America. In Hong Kong, there is one direct flight ✈️ to LAX and other major cities. I’m traveling from the MENA region to offer better context.
Advice? Would Hong Kong be better?
Edit: I plan to stay for 10 nights. I’m more so thinking about the logistics of getting home right after which is why I’m leaning towards Hong Kong 🇭🇰.
And what was your experience like leading up to the redundancy or getting non-renewed or contract rescinded? How soon were you told? The most awkward timing you experienced? How soon were you able to find something else? And what advice you’ll give to future international teachers? I’ll start…..
Other thoughts?
I interviewed a week ago, 7 days but 5 business days ago, and still have not heard anything. I sent a follow up email. When I logged onto the employer careers site, I did see one 1 view. As of now, no follow up after being told I’ll hear back in a week.
And after being told “we’re still interviewing other candidates”

Particularly blacks from the UK 🇬🇧 or America 🇺🇸 or any EU or western country? If you’re not black, you’re welcome to offer your perspective on how you feel your black colleagues are regarded.
As for me, the locals (in the UAE 🇦🇪) are absolutely wonderful! For some of the other groups, it’s been…..interesting. It appears to be a hierarchy.
Serious question needing serious answers.
The sister and gf only had sex. That’s it. No full blown relationship. She wasn’t with the brother at the time.
This epidemic is truly concerning. Any other thoughts on this?
I cannot stress this enough. Please don’t do this. I know it’s been said to do this but I think this can backfire horribly on the teacher. One could be out of job and screwed if the interview doesn’t work out for some reason.
If references are required, either a) inform the interviewing school you would be most comfortable sharing the contact of your direct supervisor when presented with a job offer or b) simply share the names of former supervisors or one or two people in leadership that you absolutely trust in that school.
Even if you’re not in jeopardy, when it comes to budget cuts, you’ll be the first to go.
Food for thought. Other thoughts on this? Horror stories? Or maybe success stories where things still worked out? I’m only speaking from what I’ve seen.
And it was for a job that I’m clearly qualified for. I’m trying to understand why. I did apply for this job in the same city I am currently working. At my current school, I’m under new leadership. I’m just trying to understand why I didn’t get the position unless the principal at the interviewing school I applied contacted my old supervisors who enabled a toxic work culture and certainly had an unfavorable view of me.
If the latter happened, it means he did not contact my current references.

Totally random but I must give this special place a special shout out. This Coffee Lab location serves good coffee. I especially enjoy having their coffee with Oatmilk or almond milk. They have different coffee choices. I always opt for the Ethiopian kind. I order daily. Their pistachio coffee is delicious too.
Are there any other coffee spots that are hidden gems 💎 in Dubai and where one can study, unwind, and enjoy delightful drinks? Please drop the recommendations in the comments.
