Noticed some plants growing on a friend’s car

We’re a trio of girl friends. I’m single, one of us is married and another just got into a relationship with our coworker who we haven’t talked to much. She’s been different and we feel like her bf is just insecure and influencing her.
Three months ago I invited her and some other friends for a house party and I had no idea her now bf would drop her there as they weren’t public about it yet. I had not expected a +1 so I did not invite him in. I also had family over and I felt it would be inappropriate as this person is a stranger to us.
Last month, our friend and her bf hosted a lunch for my other friend, me and my brother and we had a nice casual chat and went for a drive as well and it was the most we got to know him as an individual a bit more. But obviously one day cannot build up on a friendship nor earn respect that he seems to be demanding from these chats. We are so confused. Are we overreacting?
