In NC: Lost my job and qualified for Medicaid

I need help understanding Medicaid. I live in NC. I lost my job in Spring 2025. I enrolled in the healthcare marketplace, which was very expensive with no income. During open enrollment in the fall, I answered the marketplace's questions about my expected income in 2026. I still did not have a job, so the application said the state would contact me. I received a Medicaid card in the mail, which was a huge help.

Fast forward to spring 2026, I was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer and began using Medicaid to see my doctors. I also got a short-term 6-8 week assignment. I called the Medicaid office to report the change and they said a case worker would call me back. I never got a call back. For this period, I am well over the $1800 threshold. However, it is ending soon.

With having no stable income and doing chemo, surgery and radiation, I need Medicaid. However, I am scared that I will be terminated because of the temp change in my income.

What should I do? Do they provide a a buffer period if they terminate? Will I have to reapply? I cannot afford to lose my doctors in the middle of what is already very stressful cancer treatment.

What should my next steps be?
