Redundancy update - I got a job
I posted end of last year that I’d just been laid off from a senior role in the games industry. It took seven months of effort but I just signed a new contract yesterday. Big relief with me being sole earner in the household.
Very few senior roles available, managed to land something, not quite the level I was on, but I’ll get back there sooner or later.
Initially found it very hard to get interviews. I’d run my CV through Co-pilot so it sounded great, but suggest this is a big mistake in hindsight because it makes you sound like everyone else and with the same language. Re-did my cv from scratch with a much better layout and without any AI - saw much better results in terms of interviews. Targeted cover letters which stand out I think also made a difference.
It took several different interviews for me to nail my technique, answers and examples, so anyone in this position make sure you learn and take notes from any interview that doesn’t lead to an offer.
I got down to final two a couple of times, hard to take but I felt then I was getting close. Last two roles had five rounds of interviews. These companies can afford to be picky so I’m proud to have landed something good.
Financially I was ok for all of 2026 but have been very frugal. Good luck to anyone in this position, it’s difficult but there is a way through.
Polestar owners - how’s the aircon given the weather?
I’m one of those many people tempted to get an EV, especially the Polestar 2. But I’m not driving around this weather without aircon. Current weather seems like the acid test - what’s the truth?!
