First Peen.. help!

Hello! What have I done wrong here? It’s my first time peening and making a SAK this way. I’m using an 8oz brass ball peen hammer. I was hitting each side and then flipping it and hitting the other side, trying to rotate it regularly. My guesses as to what went wrong are:

- Leaving too much brass rod sticking out before peening, causing it to bend when hitting it with a hammer

- Hitting too hard

I guess once it bends it’s over?

Peening 91mm

Any tips on how to peen the first end of a brass rod in a 91mm SAK build? Like, how do you hold the rod? I’ve tried so many things - the most effective so far has been wrapping electrical tape around the rod, clamping it in a vice, and hammering it. But the rod slips down slowly, which means I have to reset it periodically, and I’m probably losing some of the energy of each hit if it’s sliding downwards making the process take longer. Can’t squeeze it too tightly or it leaves marks in the rod. Anyway. Anyone have any better ideas?

93mm alox mod Qs and tips

I’m working on a 93mm mod. I am replacing the pivots with threaded barrels + screws. I’m trying to understand some of the logistics and have some general Qs.

Is there an ideal length for a pivot barrel in relation to a stack? I’m using victorinox alox scales - how far up the hole should the end of the pivot barrel sit? I have long barrels so I can cut them any length. Feels like they should sit about a mm or two below the surface of the scale - anyone have thoughts on that?

Figuring out the proper tightness of the screws. If they’re too tight the tools don’t open and close properly. If they’re not tight enough there is play on the tools. Sometimes it seems like there is no middle ground and it’s either too tight or not tight enough. Tips?

I’ve heard of using washers but where and why? There are no washers in a stock build

It can be really tricky to get the second scale over the pivot barrels. It’s really hard to get that in place. What do yall do to make that work?

Anything else? Trying to learn and get better

Grinding feeling when opening tools

I’m getting what feels like grinding when opening the combo tool or the corkscrew on a yeoman build I’m doing. Right now the assembly is not peened, the layers are all just sitting on brass rods. The tools and the layers don’t feel rough at all. I’m not sure what the issue is, any suggestions?

EDIT: upon close inspection it there are some rough parts and even a protrusion on the tools in question. Not sure how that happened. Perhaps when cleaning and sanding the liners some metal dust got in there?

I did a successful mod I think after messing up a few times. It came out pretty well, only issue is I can’t get the middle screws to sit flush with the top of the scales. Here are some pics!

If anyone has any thoughts on the screw situation I’d love to hear.

Hello! I am modding a 93mm alox, and I’m replacing the steel pins with threaded pivot barrels + screws. I am realizing the barrels are 1mm or so too long, and so the screws won’t sit flush with the scales. What do yall who are more experienced with this recommend to remedy this?
