VENTING: Second-Class Citizen

Am I the only "county island" resident who feels like a second-class citizen? I didn't know I lived on an island until after I made an offer on my house; I went to see who my city council rep was and--lo and behold!--I don't have one. I didn't think this would be a thing because...why would it? The whole thing seemed so ridiculous. And now, after five years here, I feel it, especially when I drive past every neighborhood with their twice-annual curbside MOUNDS of bulk pickup that will be taken away FOR FREE by trash collection. I mean, really?? WTF??

VENT: Quit telling me to "remember who you were before you met her"

They mean well. I know they do. And it sounds like good advice.

But I was 17 YEARS OLD when we met. A literal child. She and I were together our entire adult lives.

"Remembering" what I enjoyed at 17 isn't terribly relevant at 53. I have to build an entirely new human being FROM SCRATCH. In addition to building an entirely new LIFE from scratch.

And let's be honest: I DON'T WANT anything new. I want my old life back.

Is there value to local TV channels?

Hey friends!

I'm finally cutting the cord with Xfinity. I'm solid on the decision (moving to AT&T Fiber for internet)...and I'm feeling somewhat apprehensive about not having access to local TV channels. I know I can get local channels with YouTube TV, but I'm debating whether I want to pay for what is effectively a cable substitute OR if it makes more sense for me to ONLY pay for what I actually watch (ESPN and Fox Sports networks, almost exclusively). Is my apprehension just a result of being a Gen X kid who is old enough to remember when local network TV was THE ONLY TV programming? Or is there value to having access to my local networks? Does anyone have an antenna that allows you to access network TV for free (I've heard that it's possible, but I don't know anyone who has an antenna AND a smart TV).

Thanks for your thoughts!

Clothes to Donate

Hi friends! I have a lot of clothes to donate, BUT I don't want to donate to a thrift store. I'd rather donate to an org that offers free clothes to women experiencing homelessness or who are in DV shelters. It seems like Poverello House only takes specific things, and a lot of what I have falls outside of that. I could haul my stuff back up to Stockton; I know of two different orgs up there from when I lived there. But I moved HERE in 2021, though, and I would much rather contribute to my FRESNO people. Thanks, good people!

Trick or Treat registry?

Hey friends,

I live on a semi – major street in Northwest/central Fresno that does not get any trick-or-treaters. I’ve lived here five years and have never seen anyone trick-or-treating on this street. It’s a county island so there aren’t sidewalks which is probably why we don’t get standard walk by. But I really miss giving away Halloween goodies. :(

I know in other parts of the country there are registries of houses that welcome trick-or-treaters. Sometimes you’re able to say whether you have candy or non-candy options for kids who have allergies, etc.

Does anybody know if we have anything like that?

Thanks in advance!
