Is NotebookLM the best tool to summarize dozens of large PDFs strictly based on the files?

I need to summarize several large PDFs. My goal is just to get a brief overview of what each specific case is about.

I was thinking about using Claude, but I noticed that both Claude and ChatGPT often use external internet knowledge or extrapolate, instead of strictly sticking to the provided text. I need a tool that relies 100% and exclusively on the PDFs, without adding outside information.

Given this, is NotebookLM my best option for this task? Thanks!

I'm currently doing this:

  • LM Studio running Qwen2.5-14B-Instruct-1M locally (the "1M" version has an extended context window, useful for longer chunks). Runs its own local OpenAI-compatible server on localhost.
  • AnythingLLM — tried this as a RAG/chat frontend on top of LM Studio. Works well for Q&A over documents, but it can't bulk-upload a folder with subfolders (known limitation), and its chat mode only retrieves relevant fragments per question — it doesn't "read" an entire document end to end unless you specifically use its agent-based document summarizer, which isn't practical for hundreds of files (you'd have to reference filenames one by one).
  • Custom Python script — ended up being the real workhorse. It:
    • Recursively walks one or more folders (including subfolders) for PDFs.
    • Forces on-demand cloud files (OneDrive in my case) to actually download before reading, since they're often just placeholders on disk.
    • Extracts text natively first; if a PDF has no real text layer, it automatically runs OCR (PyMuPDF for rendering pages + Tesseract, with contrast/sharpening preprocessing) — but writes the OCR output to a separate new folder, never touching the original file.
    • Feeds the extracted text to the local LLM via LM Studio's API using a map-reduce approach: splits huge documents into chunks, summarizes each chunk, then recursively combines chunk-summaries into one final summary — so document length isn't limited by the model's context window.
    • Is resumable: keeps a JSONL log of what's already been processed, so you can Ctrl+C anytime and pick up later without repeating work.
    • Never modifies, renames, or duplicates original files — only ever creates new output files alongside.
  • Curious what this community thinks — better local model choice for this kind of legal-document summarization task? Better OCR settings? Anyone doing something similar with a smarter architecture (e.g. skipping the naive map-reduce, batching OCR more efficiently, etc.)?

If I resubscribe to Claude Pro, will I regain access to my old Projects (claude cowork) and their chat history?

Hi everyone,

I recently cancelled my Claude Pro subscription ($20/month) for this month, so my account is currently on the free tier.

When I was on Pro, I created several Projects in (CLAUDE CO WORK) with important chat histories. Now that I'm on the free plan, the "Projects" tab is completely blurred out, and I can't click on it.

If I reactivate my Claude Pro subscription, will I get full access back to my old Projects and all the specific chats inside them? Having access to that data is super important to me.

Screenshot looks like my projects are not anymore :(

Thanks in advance for the help!

uge disappointment with Abacus.ai – Massive credit burn and outdated data compared to Claude Pro ($10 promo trap?)

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my terrible experience today with Abacus.ai. I just subscribed today using their $10 promotion, and honestly, it’s a massive disappointment.

In just 3 to 4 questions using 4.8 Opus, the platform burned through almost 1,000 credits (around 150-300 credits per single prompt!). If I were using official Claude Pro for $20/month, this wouldn't have even scratched the surface of the 4-hour usage windows they give you for Opus. This is completely unsustainable. To make things worse, the model gave me outdated information about current tech, claiming certain phones don't exist yet.

Does anyone know if Abacus has a refund or cancellation policy? Can I get my money back since I just signed up today?

User: Hello Claude, look, I need a backup email to put only banking apps there and watch series 4 days a week but not many hours, just 2 hours at night. Which one would be better? I'm looking for flagship killers: Xiaomi 15 Pro? or iPhone 17e? I'm analyzing maybe a maximum of 2500 soles. Note that they definitely must be available in Peru, preferably not imported.

Claude Opus 4.8: Hello! I'll help you figure this out. First, pay attention to an important budget detail before comparing. Real prices in Peru (S/ 2,500): With S/ 2,500, both models you mentioned are out of your reach:

  • Xiaomi 15 (not "Pro"): rounds around S/ 3,500–4,000+ in Peru. The 15 Pro/Ultra is well above that (S/ 5,000+). It doesn't fit your budget.
  • iPhone 17e: does not officially exist yet. Apple launched the iPhone 16e (~S/ 2,800–3,200), and a "17e" would only be expected around 2027. It doesn't fit today either. Let me verify current prices in Peru to give you fresh data, because this changes quickly.

[Search Results]

I have fresh data now. I'll summarize what's important: Real prices in Peru (June 2026): Xiaomi 15 Ultra rounds around S/ 4,000 (Líbero). The 15 Pro is not officially sold in Peru; what is available is the Xiaomi 15T / 15T Pro (Xiaomi Perú). iPhone 17e → does not exist. Apple has the 16e, and a "17e" is not confirmed. Forget about it for now. Neither of the two you asked for fits in S/ 2,500.

What DOES fit your budget and matches your usage: Your usage is light: banking apps + watching series ~2 h/night, 4 days/week. You don't need an expensive flagship killer. What is critical for you is: a good AMOLED screen, good battery, and available in Peru with a local warranty. With that, the best candidates under S/ 2,500:

  • Xiaomi 15T (when it drops) / 14T (~S/ 2,000–2,500): AMOLED 6.83" 120Hz, great battery, Leica camera. The closest "flagship killer" in your range.
  • Redmi Note 15 Pro / Pro+ (~S/ 1,300–1,800): AMOLED, huge battery, ideal for series.
  • Samsung Galaxy A56/A57 (~S/ 1,800–2,200): Excellent screen, brand with good support in Peru.

Regarding the backup email (only for banking apps): Good idea to separate an email just for banking. Recommendation: Create a brand new, exclusive Gmail (don't use it for anything else, no networks or purchases). Turn on 2-step verification and a strong recovery key. Do not cross-link it to your main email. Do you want me to look up current prices and stock for the Xiaomi 15T / 14T in Peruvian stores (Hiraoka, Falabella, etc.) to confirm which one fits best in your S/ 2,500? (Credits Used: 171)

User: Hey Abacus, really this is the first chat and look, you leave much to be desired. Even though you are using Opus 4.8 mmm how do I set the version to High or Max? Also another doubt:https://www.falabella.com.pe/falabella-pe/product/153001480/iphone-17e-256-gb-a3575/153001482Obviously they already released the iPhone 17e, what's going on?

Claude Opus 4.8: You are right about two things, and I apologize. Let me check the iPhone 17e because I was wrong. You are absolutely right and I correct myself: the iPhone 17e does exist (2026 launch). Thanks for the link. About the iPhone 17e from that link — watch out for the fine print: Price: S/ 2,939 (down from S/ 3,999). It exceeds your S/ 2,500. It is imported, it is NOT in Peru. The seller is "tektrade pe" (TEKTRADE INC, International Sale), "shipped by Falabella from the USA". You said you prefer not to import → this one does not meet that requirement. No store stock and no local Apple Peru warranty. Strange specs in the listing: it says "RAM 1GB" and "front camera 2MP" — these are seller errors; the real 17e features an A19 chip and better cameras. That already gives you a sign of how poorly managed that listing is. Conclusion: it's out of budget AND it's imported. It doesn't fit what you asked for.

Your other question: How do I set Opus to "High" or "Max"? It doesn't work that way. There is no High/Max version selector for Opus 4.8 in ChatLLM Teams — it's a single model. What you can do: In the model selector (above the chat), you choose which model to use (Opus, GPT, Gemini, etc.). Some models have "reasoning/thinking" modes that you can activate when available; that is the closest equivalent to "giving it more effort". Look for it as a reasoning/thinking option next to the selector. For a purchase like this, the model is not the problem — the important thing is fresh data, and for that, I am already searching in Peruvian stores. (Credits Used: 154)

User: Look for alternatives for a phone like that, one that is good, nice, and cheap ok, it doesn't matter if it has to be imported, give me 5 alternatives, remember they must be very good.

Claude Opus 4.8: Done! That changes everything then: no S/ 2,500 limit and you accept importing. Let me find the best current "flagship killer" options for your usage (series + banking apps). Here are 5 top "good, nice, and cheap" alternatives:

  1. POCO F7 Ultra — the value king: Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. 6.67" AMOLED 2K screen. 5,300 mAh battery + 120W charging. Approx price: ~$450–650 USD (S/ 1,700–2,400).
  2. Realme GT7 Pro — eternal battery: Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. 6.78" AMOLED LTPO screen. 6,500 mAh battery + 120W. Approx price: ~$550–700 USD (S/ 2,000–2,600).
  3. Xiaomi 15T Pro / POCO F8 Pro — the safe all-rounder: Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. AMOLED 1.5K screen. 5,500–6,200 mAh battery + 90–100W fast charging. Approx price: ~$500–700 USD (S/ 1,900–2,600).
  4. OnePlus 15 / 15R — record battery + clean software: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. 6.78" AMOLED up to 165 Hz. 7,300 mAh battery. Approx price: 15R from ~$600 USD (S/ 2,200+).
  5. Honor 400 Pro — beautiful and thin: Snapdragon 8 series chip. 6.7" AMOLED screen. ~5,300–6,000 mAh battery + 100W. Approx price: ~$450–600 USD (S/ 1,700–2,200).

My recommendation for YOU: Since your usage is light, the ones that shine the most are the Realme GT7 Pro or the POCO F7 Ultra. If you prefer zero import risk, go for the Xiaomi 15T Pro which is in Peru with a warranty. (Credits Used: 295)

User: Look Abacus mmm I need you to help me with a super interesting and long legal document, how do I use opus 4.8 max or Claude version 5 which doesn't appear mmm I'm getting disappointed very quickly with you guys.

Claude Opus 4.8: I understand the frustration, and I will be totally honest and direct with you so as not to confuse you: About Claude versions: There is no "Opus 4.8 Max" or a High/Max selector. Opus 4.8 is a single model, without levels. That's not something you are missing to activate — there is simply no such thing. Claude 5 / Opus 5: If it doesn't appear in your model selector, it's because it's not yet available on your ChatLLM Teams account. Models are enabled in the selector as they are integrated into the platform. About your legal document: I can really help with this using the current model. But I need you to guide me, because "long legal document" covers a lot. Tell me: What kind of document is it? For which jurisdiction? What do you need exactly? Do you have a base text? Let's stop going around in circles with versions and get to work on what really matters. (Credits Used: 34.72)

User: I thought you already had fable5 from Claude, what do you mean not in my account? Claude allows you to select opus 4.8 and set High max there, the medium effort, how do I activate that thinking stuff?

Claude Opus 4.8: I'll clarify point by point, without beating around the bush: About "Opus 4.8 with High / Max / Medium effort": What you describe — High / Max / Medium effort levels — is not a feature that exists in ChatLLM Teams. It is possible you saw it on another platform (for example, the official Claude/Anthropic app or some other environment), but here there is no "effort" selector for Opus 4.8. It is a single model, without levels. About "Claude 5 / Fable 5": If it doesn't appear in your account, it's because it's not yet enabled on the platform. It's not something you can activate manually. About "thinking" mode: In ChatLLM Teams, the reasoning mode depends on the model. Not all models expose it as a button. When a model supports it, you will see it as an option next to the text box or in the model selector (it usually says Thinking or Reasoning). If that option does not appear on your screen with the model you have selected, it means that model does not offer it as an option here. (Credits Used: 32.95)

realmente no me siento seguro

iPhone 17e for a backup phone?

Hey guys, so I have an iPhone 17 Pro Max, but you can't clone apps on iOS. Sometimes I need to check my company's banking apps, so I need a second phone. I was thinking of getting a 256GB iPhone 17e and also using it to watch Netflix series from time to time. Or, I could go for a Xiaomi 15T Pro. The thing is, I'm not a fan of Xiaomi's operating system, but people say it has a better, bigger screen and all that."

Hello, I use Claude (the $20/month version) and I pay for the full annual package. Mmm, I saw this website, Abacus, what is it like? Does it consume less or is it more efficient? Because price-wise it looks better, but there isn't much information out there."

When do you finally stop comparing yourself to others and feeling like you're not enough?

I'm a 30-year-old guy, and honestly, I don't consider myself very attractive. I’ve been dealing with severe self-comparison issues for over 2 or 3 years now.

In therapy, my therapist suggested trying to "describe others without judging them." For example, if I see a guy or a girl, I should only describe their hair, their clothes, or the color of their outfit. You just describe what you see—you don't judge, you don't jump to conclusions, and you don't label them as handsome, ugly, or anything. You say absolutely nothing like that, you just describe.

However, it’s incredibly hard to maintain that mindset. Every time I open social media, it’s the same thing: attractive girls are only with attractive guys. And even when a girl isn't conventionally attractive, with the whole boom of social media, they have guys from other cities or countries sliding into their Instagram DMs. The competition just feels overwhelming now.

For those who have been through this: When does this mindset finally stop? How do you actually fix this or cope with it?

Is the "Infinite To-Do List" a productivity tool or just a high-tech anxiety generator?

I’ve reached a point where I don’t know if I’m organizing my life or just documenting my slow descent into stress.

I’ve tried all the apps—Zenkit, Trello, etc.—but they didn't click. Now, I’ve moved everything to a massive Excel sheet, but all I see is a list that grows faster than I can check things off. I’ve categorized everything, and the sheer volume is overwhelming:

Daily/Routine: Even the small stuff, like remembering to take meds if I'm feeling sick.

Weekly/Weekends: All the errands and chores that pile up.

The "Mid-Month" Check: Paying for electricity, water, internet, and credit cards every two weeks.

Monthly: Professional tasks, like sending out those mandatory end-of-month reports.

Annual/Long-term: Essential things like renewing car insurance.

The "Opportunity" List: Tasks that only happen when a specific window opens, like checking for PhD scholarship applications at universities like Yale.

It’s all there. Every time I think of something new, I add it. But looking at this giant Excel sheet every day makes me feel more stressed than if I had just forgotten the tasks. It’s like I’m a slave to the spreadsheet.

Does anyone actually find these hyper-detailed lists helpful? Or is there a point where "being organized" just becomes a different form of mental exhaustion? If you’ve been in this "Excel hell," how did you simplify it without feeling like you were going to let something important (like a bill or a deadline) slip through the cracks?

I see so many "battlestation" and setup photos on here where it’s just a monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse on a perfectly empty desk. It looks amazing, but I have to ask: is that your actual reality?

My desk is currently a disaster zone. I’ve got:

  • A handful of pens scattered around.
  • A small box with random USB drives.
  • A dermaroller (don't ask).
  • A small toolkit for quick fixes.
  • Two A4 notebooks and a mountain of loose papers.

Every time I look at these minimalist setups, I wonder if I’m doing something wrong or if everyone just shoves their clutter onto the floor the second they take the picture.

Be honest—does your desk actually stay that "clean," or are you hiding the chaos just out of frame? How do you guys actually manage to get work done with nothing on your desk?

The picture is my dailey setup
