Still undecided From XR to 16e or 17e

Hi everyone, I’m planning to replace my 128GB iPhone XR soon, which I’ve had since November 2019, with a new iPhone. I’ve been looking at the iPhone 16e because it has the features I’m interested in (I was also looking for a smaller Iphone, but they don’t make them anymore), and especially because of the competitive price — I have a psychological limit of staying under €500.

Do you think it makes sense to spend a bit more and wait for the iPhone 17e instead? What concerns me the most is storage space. It’s never really been a big issue for me, but if photos and videos keep getting larger, it could become one.

The most important things for me are battery life and signal reception/antenna quality, because on my XR both are basically terrible at this point. What do you think?

The iPhone 17e is the classic, practical iPhone we’ve been missing.

I wrote my thoughts so I hope you could appreciate that too!

I’ve always known iPhones for their clean, practical design, a form factor that just works and feels premium. If you handed this iPhone to somebody 10 or 12 years ago, they’d immediately say, "Yes, this is an iPhone." The boxy sides, the silver rails, and the clean white back. The fact that it has Ceramic Shield 2 and satin glass on the back is just nice.

Back in the day, iPhones with the home button and fingerprint biometrics were completely practical. Sure, they had bezels, but they were built in a premium, sensible way. You get that exact same feeling with this iPhone. It’s not overwhelmingly large like a Pro Max. It’s not trying to do too much. It’s just practical, and you still get Face ID.

60Hz is fine, don't get it twisted, this is an OLED HDR display with a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Yes, it’s 60Hz, and practically speaking, that is more than enough for a smartphone. Obviously, there is a fluidity and lifelike naturalness that comes with 120Hz. However, this is a practical device. It's a phone where your life does not revolve around staring at it, so it doesn't need to be buttery smooth to do its job.

The display itself is gorgeous, and the way the 6.1-inch screen falls snug into the palm of your hand so effortlessly—without being too weighty—is exactly what I’ve always appreciated iPhones for.

Sure, the single 48MP Fusion camera doesn’t have that 0.5x ultrawide, but I never liked or used that anyway. I’ve always wanted to take a picture of what's right in front of me without the distortion of an ultrawide lens. And regarding the telephoto: for somebody who is *very* into their photography and needs 100% clarity on a zoom, yeah, go for that triple camera setup.
But for the practical user? Look at the history. Back when every phone had a single rear camera, the iPhone still took the best shots and the best videos. The balance of the exposure and color is incredibly true to life—it captures what is actually before your eyes without being overly unnatural or over-sharpened.

I’m coming from the Pixel 10 Pro, and this camera honestly takes better photos for me. I don't care about a 5x telephoto zoom if the camera gets the colors and exposure dramatically wrong and over-sharpens everything. This single iPhone camera, processed by the A19 chip's Photonic Engine, just gets it right. We've managed for a long time snapping cherishable memories and posting enjoyable photos to social media with a single lens, and a triple camera setup wouldn't change what this phone fundamentally is and can do.

My favorite iPhone was the iPhone 7, and over the years I’ve had the 12 mini, 13 mini, 15 Pro, 16, and 17 Pro. It had a practical premium build, speakers on the top, fingerprint Home button at the bottom with the display just blends away when it’s off, having water resistance at last, clean practical OS and app design especially Apple Notes, and that simple elegantly put rear camera which was reliable and took good photos and smooth videos, which fits in your pocket and fits in the palm of your hand, it wasn’t too bulky or weighty; it was practical; it was sleek; it was a nice smart phone and what I’ve always known iPhone for.

I found the 17 Pro and 16 to be almost *too* flashy. Features like Camera Control, the Dynamic Island, and 120Hz made it feel like the device was begging me to engage with it more than I needed or wanted to. Unless you're passionate about photography, constantly tweaking exposure etc, Camera Control is just an extra touch-capacitive button along with the other features above trying to make the device overly enticing. I missed the iPhone's roots—a premium, simple, practical tool that was just enough.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate what is actually packed into this 170g, 6.1-inch chassis. A 4000+ mAh Battery. In an efficient 6.1-inch iOS device. That is great. A19 Chip & 8GB RAM, all the capable "smartphoning" you could ever need, with years of security support ahead of it. Action Button and USB-C are just sweet. Better water rating (6m for 30 mins), improved C1X modem for connectivity, MagSafe, Dolby Vision, and on-device ray tracing. A 12MP front camera and Face ID.

Even though this starts at 599 (for 256gb, though I have the 512gb variant) and is the entry model for the 17 lineup, just compare that value for what you’d get now for that price in comparison to the iPhone back then not too differently priced; let’s not get it twisted—this is Apple at its roots.

Honestly, it's just a combination of folks sleeping on it or being insecure about not having a triple camera to show off in the mirror, afraid of looking "cheap” or sum but this device is nothing of that sorts. It’s the classic, premium, practical iPhone we have always known and appreciated, just updated with today’s internals. Gorgeous OLED Ceramic Shield two with anti-glare, classic silver boxy rails, white satin glass back, aerospace-grade aluminum, sapphire crystal lens, and a simple camera that takes amazing shots. This is what the iPhone always was, y'all.

Man I want the white instead of black…

But something about having a black phone just feels better. I love dressing with either a black shirt or pants more than I ever wear white, and I like the more stealthy look of black tech.

But that white looks clean af…

iPhone 17e Action Button Suggestions?

I had an iPhone 8 Plus for past 8 years and it never let me down. I still have it in a drawer in case I break my new 17e which I had to upgrade because besides the lack of IOS support on the 8, my banking apps were no longer working. So got the 17e and am fairly happy. However I miss the silent mode switch which is handy when for example I’m not in a scheduled work silent mode and need to silence the phone. So I assigned the Action Button to give me what the 17e is missing, that quick access to mute the phone. I’m wondering if this is best use of the Action Button? And how do you use the Action Button considering it’s pretty fast to get to the camera or flashlight from the customized Home Screen?? Any suggestions most appreciated.

17e

Me text from my new 17, i bought it in January bcus my 11 (128gb) the battery couldn't survive plus need bigger storage. So instead of replacing the battery, im thinking of upgrade to 16e which within my budget but... No magsafe, still starting 128 which pushes me to pay extra saving for the 17 instead 🥲

Now ive been reading subs on 17e about how good it was but theres no turning back haha. Only if i would have knew that 17e is coming soon, i would definitely pick the 17e!

iOS 26.5

I saw that iOS 26.5 came out a few days ago and I wanted to know how it’s been for people who already updated, like performance, battery life and stuff, before I update since I’m still on iOS 26.4

Came here from S25

So, I used an S25 for about 5-6 months (got it from my dad for free). Before that, I had a Pixel 8. Honestly, I didn't like the S25 because of the UI, some typical Android issues with video quality on social media, and especially THE BATTERY LIFE.
So I decided to switch to iOS, plus I recently bought a Mac. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a phone, and I knew I wouldn't fully utilize the camera on the Pro or even the regular 17, as I'm not really a photo guy. As I mentioned, I just needed a decent, smooth-running iOS device with good battery life, which is why I bought this thing.
Moving on to the phone itself — it’s damn great. It has everything you need, even for a 20-year-old guy like me who loves buying new tech. I really don't think this phone is just for older people.
The only shortcoming I've noticed is the screen brightness. It's a bit hard to see clearly in direct sunlight, but it's manageable. I've had it for 15 days and already damaged it a bit, btw, because I loved using it without a case (I always use one now).
Battery life is fine. Not the absolute best, but it easily lasts me a full day (6-7 hours of screen time doing socials like TikTok, Reels, Shorts, and gaming like Oddmar).

Which colour is your Iphone 17e?

I am planning to upgrade from I phone 11 and my father offered me to buy me I phone 17e. I am not a big special features and new model person, I love the minimalistic vibe of the 17e. I usually use a mobile up to 5-6 years. so he is planning to buy it from Europe and I need to know which 17e colours you have? what are the benefits and reasons that made you choose the 17e and exact colour?

thank you.

URGENT help request - is my 17e the problem or is my carrier the issue?!

I bought my iPhone 17e last saturday ($600 if I’m not mistaken, paid in full and activated in store). I think the return policy is 7 days and that’s tomorrow!!

I already find this phone to be worse and slower than my 2020 iPhone SE, which was at full storage and losing function when I moved on to this one...

The SE was somehow much faster loading web pages on cellular data...Earlier today I noticed this phone wouldn’t even budge when I tried to look up a restaurant menu on LTE. I live in Iowa City, a state college town, not the sticks.

The clerk at Cricket told me this phone was (quote) ”designed to work on the premium plans”, and that it would not move in the way I liked until I paid for Cricket’s more premium plans (upwards of $50/mo)…

I’ve been paying for the $35/mo plan for YEARS with minimal trouble until now… I barely even use 2 gigs of data, and I make shit money as a preschool director…

I think this is odd and really putting me off Cricket and maybe even iPhone altogether…

Is the clerk correct? Should I switch phones or carriers?

Thanks for any guidance you can offer! 🙏

(side rant: I also find it absurd that the sim is locked to cricket for 6 months, when I paid in full up front for the device)

Thinking of upgrading from 13mini, is 17e worth it? Camera? ios26 function?

I have a 13mini currently. I've been fairly happy with it and have been resisting upgrading because I don't like large phones as they're uncomfortable and cumbersome to hold. However, I made the mistake of updating to ios26 about 2 months ago on my mini, and it's completely ruined the functioning. The phone is very glitchy now, the battery life drains outrageously fast (even when I'm not using the phone!), battery heats up like crazy now, and I swear even the keyboard is less sensitive.

I was told that the reason ios26 works poorly on the 13mini is because it's an older phone and ios26 doesn't work well with older phones. So, I'm genuinely thinking of upgrading just to have a functional phone, which is super frustrating tbh. The 17e is the next smallest phone, which is why I was looking into it, but I'd be potentially open to the 17 if it's significantly better than the 17e.

What are your opinions of the 17e compared to the 13mini? Or 17e vs. 17? I've seen mixed things online about the 17e camera. I'm not a photographer, but I do like taking photos on occasion casually (meaning, if I walk by some cool flowers, I'll take a photo of them). The 4 main things I do on the phone are: internet, email, call/text, and gps. I'm not a super techy person and don't care about a perfect phone; I just want a functional one.

Joined the iOS gang! Downsizing life which includes my daily phone

Hi, finally pulled the trigger and switched from Android. iOS work wonders together with my Mac Air M4.

I like the single lens camera in the back. It just sparks my creativity so much that I’d go out my way to do photowalks again. This is a big deal to me cus im in the middle of repairing my fujifilm mirrorless camera and you know what? This iPhone 17e its literally a prime lens that can fit my pocket. I love it so much!

Do you guys share iPhone analytics data with Apple and developers?

I was just thinking about it, what if all the iPhone 17e users share analytics data with Apple and developers. Coming from only iPhone 17e users it will make 17e much more reliable and may fix various bugs and glitches.

I know the internet terminology and the privacy fear among people but genuine question, what would they know that they already don’t know about you.

Just wanted to understand everyone’s opinion on this topic. I hope, I didn’t offend anybody as some people are really stubborn about privacy without knowing “privacy is a myth” and they can be tracked regardless of what they do to prevent it.

Regrets..? Just some thoughts from switching from the 13!

Hello! Just some thoughts I had to share. I recently upgraded from my 13 (reluctantly I really loved that phone probably the best thing Apple has made 😢) To a 17e, my parents got it for me as a graduation gift and have been insisting for me to upgrade! Anyways I picked out the 17e because it was the closest to my 13 but now I’m having a few regrets? I don’t know.

First off this phone for sure performs wayyyyy better than my 13 and does a lot more and the battery life is wayyy better. Over all really like it for these reasons! And it looks super clean!

Now some negative thoughts.
1 the camera quality is near identically if not slightly worse in some areas? I’m not a big photo guy but I did notice the drop a bit when taking photos in darker areas. Not a huge bother and for the price point I still think the phone is amazing! But something I did notice the 17e cameras might be just a smidge better. (I have turned on 48 megapixel mode to.)

  1. This Glass OS SUCKS.

Overall I really love this phone I just love how clean it is but I feel a bit regretful with the camera quality but I guess I should’ve done more research, I do not know.

I don’t know whether or not I should ask my parents to return the phone and get me the base 17. Or I should wait one more week. (Also PS don’t take this as me taking for granted for what my parents have given me I am so grateful just some thoughts!)
[My dad did say I should’ve got the 17… but I went with the 17e so I don’t know maybe I should own up to it and say I should’ve gotten the base… it’d be very awkward and “told you so”….]

User requirements

I see numerous questions regarding upgrading iPhones. Sure, the newer models are fancy and have lots of features. But do you really need those features and is it worth spending hundreds of dollars more?

In general, the quality of Apple hardware is such that hardware is often outliving the capability of the machine to run new software. For instance, my Mac MacBook Pro Retina from 2015 is unable to run macOS and failed with Open Core work around. The machine is now running in Linux Mint and I’ve finally gotten the FaceTime camera to operate.

IMO the focus of Apple on the quality of its phone user interface was the most important factor in the success of the iPhone. When introduced in 2007, I was using a Nokia N95. The Nokia’s camera hardware at the time was superior to Apple’s product but the Nokia software (Symbian 60) was abysmal.

I think it’s important to consider what you need and not what is being fed to you by the marketing departments. In my case I’m leaning towards a leapfrog upgrade from the iPhone 13 to 17e. I don’t need a state of the art camera. I prefer larger lenses and manual control of shutter speed and aperture - a film camera actually. But if it’s a matter of making a call to emergency services in an area with marginal cellular reception, I’d rather go with an advanced 5G modem able to access multiple frequencies simultaneously to achieve and maintain a voice or data connection even if the signal is weak.

What do you think?

Bought Me iPhone 17e

Hello all

Just ordered me a new iPhone 17e coming from Android. Last time I had an iPhone was 15 but do like the directions IOS is going and my girlfriend got an iPhone so figure to hop back onto the iPhone

Getting better reception and signal hold than all my other iPhones ever !

using the 17e in my office now…flip flopping between the 17 pro and the 13 mini…only one to consistently hold a 5g signal that’s actually usable is the 17e…

would be a shame to give up the third camera and faster charging and better thermals for this little beast, the 17e…but I just might if the signal is always this good !

how has your reception been ?

Is the iPhone 17e worth it as a first iPhone?

I'm going to buy my first iPhone. I'm from Brazil, and the price of the 256GB iPhone 15 and the iPhone 17e are very similar. The 17e was cheaper than the iPhone 15. Since I've never had dynamic island mode, I believe I won't miss using it, but I'm not sure. I also don't care about ultrawide lenses; however, I want an iPhone that takes good photos. I currently have a Samsung Galaxy A54.
