Did the #Metoo movement have any lasting impact on Bollywood?
Random thought today:
I see people comparing the #MeToo movement in Hollywood with what happened in Bollywood (or "Jollywood" as some people jokingly call it), and I am curious about the actual outcomes.
In Hollywood, the movement led to some very visible consequences. Harvey Weinstein was criminally convicted and sentenced to prison. Powerful figures such as Kevin Spacey, Matt Lauer, Charlie Rose, and others faced investigations, lawsuits, career setbacks, or removal from major projects. Many studios, media companies, and talent agencies also introduced stronger workplace harassment policies and reporting mechanisms.
In Bollywood, the movement generated significant media attention in 2018 after allegations were made against several well known figures including Nana Patekar, Alok Nath, Sajid Khan, Kailash Kher, Sham Kaushal, Raj Kumar Hirani, Anu Malik, Vikas Bahl, Subash Kapoor and others. Some projects were affected, investigations were launched, and a few individuals temporarily stepped away from work. However, many later returned to the industry and there seem to have been far fewer long term consequences compared to Hollywood.
This makes me wonder:
Did the Indian entertainment industry undergo any substantial structural change because of #MeToo?
Were there lasting consequences for accused individuals, or was the impact mostly temporary?
Have workplace practices, reporting systems, or industry culture actually improved in any measurable way?
I would love to hear examples of cases where the movement produced tangible results, as well as examples where it failed to create lasting change.
Also did I miss any names?
