JAWS - Ghanaian Movie Poster by Leonardo

It's JAWS like you've never seen it before!

If you haven't seen a Ghanaian film poster art before, you're in for a treat. Here's the story behind this fascinating genre of movie poster art:

In the 1980s, some enterprising people in Ghana realized that there was a market for showing films outside of the main cities, where villagers don't have easy access to electricity let alone movies. So they traveled to these rural areas with a TV, a VCR and a portable generator to screen films.

To drum up business, traveling cinema operators hired local artists to hand draw posters of the movies (oftentimes, on recycled flour sacks). It didn't matter that these artists sometimes hadn't even seen the movie - they just had to draw something interesting that made people want to watch!

Today, there are no more traveling cinemas in that African country but the spirit of the outrageousness of the Ghanaian movie posters lives on. This one above, of the movie JAWS, is drawn by legendary Ghanaian artist Leonardo.

Deadly Prey Galleries (which was recently featured on John Oliver's Last Week Tonight) has plenty more excellent posters.

Harry Potter Leaf-Cutting Fanart by Lito

Yes, that's an actual leaf, cut to depict a Harry Potter fanart scene.

Japanese leaf-cutting artist リト(lito_leafart) cut Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry out of the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling out of a leaf. There's a perched owl carrying the Hogwarts invite over on the top left corner.

Philippines-based indie artists Criselda Valera (mommagorilla) and glitchygorilla collaborated to create this fun artwork titled "Scream for the Princess". It features Bowser from Nintendo's Mario franchise in the style of Edvard Munch's 1893 masterpiece "The Scream".

Can you find your way out of the maze before Jack finds you?

Illustrator Laurie Greasley turned The Overlook Hotel's iconic carpet pattern into a horror-filled maze in this fanart (link to original source). The photo of the Indian chief next to Room 237 is a nice touch. Via r/ilovefanart
