2027 Thanaweya Amma: Medicine or Engineering (AI/Biomedical)? I don't know what to choose.
I'm in the 2027 Thanaweya Amma batch (not the new baccalaureate system) and I'm stuck between Science and Math.
I'm trying to think long-term, especially with AI advancing so fast. I have an IELTS 8.5, and I'm already comfortable with self-learning AI, machine learning, and agentic coding.
My dilemma:
- Science: If I get Medicine, I'd be a second-generation doctor. My father was a neurosurgeon, so I'd have guidance and experience.
- Math: If I get Engineering, I'd aim for Biomedical Engineering with a focus on AI and machine learning. I also have an engineer in my family who can mentor me.
What worries me most is this:
If I choose Science but miss Medicine, my options may be weaker. With Math, I feel there are stronger backup choices even if I don't get my first preference.
Right now I've chosen Math, but I can still switch to Science before December. I also prayed Salat Al-Istikhara, but I'm still unsure.
My family says:
«"Anyone can learn programming online, but not everyone can become a doctor without medical school."»
My father used to say something similar:
«"Even a soap factory worker can become an ambassador, but not just anyone can become a doctor."»
So I'm torn.
Should I choose Medicine and use my family's background, or Engineering and build a career in AI and biomedical tech?
If you were me, what would you do, and why?
I'd especially like to hear from doctors, engineers, biomedical engineers, AI professionals, or anyone who's faced a similar choice. This version is balanced and should encourage people from both fields to give you thoughtful advice instead of just saying "follow your passion."
