Time Team has shared the scan of the Orkney anomaly at the Ness of Brodgar. Digging starts tomorrow!

From Time Team, full story at link.

>We’re back on site tomorrow to investigate an intriguing circular feature revealed by the Time Team ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey in July 2025.

>With a diameter of about nine metres, the circular anomaly lies to the north-west of former Trenches J and T, beneath the area used for vehicle access and parking in previous years. The four-week exploratory dig will see a 14 x 12 metre trench opened over the feature to clarify what it represents and how it relates, if at all, to the previously excavated archaeology. Over 20 years of work at the Ness Neolithic complex, circular features were notable by their absence.

“Nothing like it has been seen before” at the Ness of Brodgar.

From the Orcadian < full story by Alex Ross at link

>A potential “new chapter” for the Ness of Brodgar has been unveiled at the Time Team world premiere at the Orkney Theatre.

>Described only as an ‘anomaly’ until now, recent geophysical surveys have uncovered an exciting new feature, which has the potential to change the way we think about the ancient site.

>Though we can not be certain about what the anomaly is until it is excavated, Dr John Gater, who is one of the original Time Team members, and Geophysics Expect, is optimistic.

>The circular anomaly hints at possible stone settings around the edge, with a larger feature in the centre.

>“There’s a slight risk — it could be a garden folly, it could be a World War 2 gun emplacement. But to be honest, I hope it is archaeological, and it could be — I don’t know… a bronze age burial, it could be in our wildest dreams a stone circle.

Second foot bridge on the CP trail now closed.

From the Park:

>NOTICE OF BRIDGE CLOSURE:

>There are now TWO successive bridge closures on the Chimney Pond Trail. The options for hikers are 1) cross the stream at both bridge sites using short re-routes across the stream beds, or 2) follow the North Basin and North Basin Cutoff Trails. Option one is the shortest, and most of the summer will not involve getting your feet wet (but this is weather dependent, so there are no guarantees). Option two will add approximately 0.6 miles to the hike between Roaring Brook to Chimney Pond.

>Our Trail staff are responding as quickly as possible to provide safe bridge crossings. The closures will remain until further notice.

Helo evec from the Knife Edge, Sunday 6/28/2026

Statement from the Maine Forest Rangers:

>On the morning of June 28, a Maine Forest Ranger helicopter short-haul rescue crew was requested by Baxter State Park for an injured hiker on the Knife’s Edge trail on Katahdin. A hiker was reported to have fallen approximately 20 feet near Pamola Peak, sustaining several injuries including a serious open fracture of the lower leg. Baxter State Park Rangers reached the patient and stabilized their injuries for transport.

>After multiple attempts due to cloud cover and stormy weather, the patient was successfully short-hauled off the mountain and transferred to a waiting ground ambulance from the Millinocket Fire Department.

>We are proud to work with our partner agencies to ensure the best possible outcomes for those who become hurt or injured while enjoying Maine’s outdoors.

Archaeologists have confirmed that a shipwreck in Newport Harbor, Rhode Island, is Captain James Cook’s famed HMS Endeavour. The identification follows 25+ years of research comparing the wreck’s structure with historic records and ship plans.

Confirmed! (Probably.)

>In the still waters of Newport Harbor, Rhode Island, the long-lost bones of a ship lie buried in silt. For centuries, the wreck had no name. Now, after more than 25 years of international detective work above and below the waves, Australian maritime archaeologists are confident they’ve found one of the most storied vessels in history: HM Bark Endeavour, the ship that carried James Cook to the Pacific, New Zealand, and the eastern coast of Australia.

Kennebec County Man Sentenced for Accessing Online Child Pornography

30 months isn't enough, imo.

From: U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Maine

>Jeffery Furlong accessed images and videos on mobile instant messaging app

>BANGOR, Maine: A China, Maine man was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Bangor for accessing child pornography with intent to view.

>U.S. District Judge Stacey D. Neumann sentenced Jeffery Furlong, 54, to 30 months in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release. Furlong pleaded guilty on September 5, 2025.

>According to court records, in June 2024, the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit began investigating a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) regarding Kik, a free instant messaging mobile app. According to the CyberTip, a Kik user, later identified as Furlong, uploaded multiple videos of child sexual abuse material. Investigators executed a search warrant at Furlong’s residence in October 2024. During the warrant’s execution, Furlong admitted that he had obtained multiple images and videos of child sexual abuse material on his cellular telephone via Kik. A search warrant on Furlong’s Kik account revealed child sexual abuse material and Furlong’s expressed sexual interest in children 6-to-12 years old.

The Hunt Trail re-route began today.

From the Park:

  • The bridge at Katahdin Stream Falls is closed for replacement.  Hikers should utilize the Bypass trail that begins at the Katahdin Stream Ranger Station and is marked with blue flagging tape.

When the bridge was damaged and collapsed years ago I used this re-route several times while the bridge was being rebuilt. It takes you through a mossy and almost untouched forest. It's wicked nice! Enjoy!

Fastest way off the mountain: Inside look at Katahdin rescue training with the Maine National Guard

From WMTW: (Video at link)

National Guard crew members and Baxter State Park rangers train for the life-or-death calls that come in when a hike on Mount Katahdin turns into a Black Hawk rescue.

Millinocket, Maine - Getting injured on a Maine mountain is one problem. Getting off of it — and to a hospital — is another.

When things go wrong on Mount Katahdin, it’s a coordinated effort to get the injured to safety.

Maine’s Total Coverage and Scott McDonnell jumped on board a National Guard Black Hawk training mission headed for Mount Katahdin, where a new season at Baxter State Park is ramping up. That means new rangers patrolling the park need training — and this time of year, so do hikers.

Right now is one of the busiest times of year for rescues.

“We were all hiking last fall; we all had a great time. Now, we're going to go hike Katahdin for the first hike of the year, and people underestimate their ability to get up the mountain and back down. This time of year, we'll have more rescues than sometimes midsummer,” said Rob Tice, Baxter State Park district ranger.

There were more than 60 rescues last year on Katahdin and across Baxter State Park. Two hikers did not make it home — father and daughter Tim and Esther Kiederling, who were found dead after cold, snow and rain conditions during their hike.

These race-against-the-clock missions are about flying and precision. But they are also about coordination and communication — exactly why the training events are so important.

With more than 17 years with the Maine National Guard, Sgt. 1st Class Joe Leclair leads the training with the Maine National Guard.

Leclair has been part of more than 50 missions where the worst has happened.

“For us to be called out, it has to be life, limb or eyesight is in danger,” he said.

After the call comes in, two pilots, a crew chief and a critical care paramedic take off from Bangor to Katahdin, arriving in around 20 minutes.

They train in all conditions — at night, in the dark, in the rain and during storms.

New helicopter pilot Patrick Orcutt, from Steuben, said he is ready for the call that turns training into a real-world rescue:

“I think a lot of the new pilots, we're always looking forward to that real-world call when we get to go out and do our jobs for real and help the community.”

With around 3 million people expected to visit Maine parks this year, the question is not if a rescue call comes in — it is when.

“I'm sure everybody wants a helicopter ride, but this isn't the way to get it.”

OP note: It's Katahdin. Not "Mount" Katahdin.
