Normal or Abnormal At-Home "Peaceful Passing" Euthanasia Experience?
Hi Vet community,
We decided to let our girl pass the rainbow bridge yesterday with at-home euthanasia. We were grateful to have 11 good days with her after her HSA diagnosis and the moment she got a little more quiet, we scheduled the appointment. We thought that at at-home "peaceful passing" would make the grief feel a little lighter but it has been the worst part of it all.
When the vet arrived, she was definitely weak but laying down comfortably as she was on gabapentin. After the vet injected the first dose to "put her to a peaceful sleep", she got a little more restless, which the vet explained was from the additional pain med boost. After 10-minutes, she got even more restless and kept repositioning herself. We put a pillow under her neck to perhaps help her breathe then finally she started gasping for air and staring into my eyes wide-open, definitely looking like she was scared/struggling/uncomfortable. As this was happening, I asked my vet if she was going and she said "she very well could be going at any time", quickly listened to her heart, and then sort of frantically injected the second dose in which she was put to rest.
I cannot stop thinking about those last final moments with her. It was the most distressed she looked throughout her entire illness and it makes my partner and I feel like we made a huge mistake... we are wondering if enough of the initial sedative was not injected, or if her breathing was so decompensated that her lungs shut down before her brain could? I am not a vet (just a second year medical student trying to make sense of this) but I can appreciate that all animals react differently to drugs. If anyone can provide some clinical insight or reassurance on this, I would deeply appreciate it. <3
