Surviving Alaska

Surviving Alaska

As Javier in Season One, Episode Five, >!is burning down his shelter, we spied this water bottle in the background. Gotta wonder if after Jordan left with such serious medical, everyone had been given water!<. Hmmm.

We get reality shows, have worked on them personally, but it’s still jarring to see this at one of the most exciting points. 🙃

Local Camping With Water

We never get to go camping because if we have time to go out of town, we are constantly having to help a family member with serious health issues and that’s been going on for about 20 years. It honestly never occurred to me to camp at home. Is there any place in Reno or Sparks or nearby that anyone knows of that has water to cool off steps away? If I could find a decent place, that’s safe and has water (because I have serious asthma and will be 60 in August) and fire pit, we could actually go for a “week” even if partner has to work.

Also, anyone interested?

S1E3 (Daisy) & S1E9 (Becka)

TL;DR: WOW all the (series only) similarities!

Without having read the book (and rewatching all the episodes before the finale), it was eerie how S1E3 foreshadows Becka’s current world: a death [Daisy and Becka] didn’t see coming for reasons they were in the dark about, escaping the surety of adults seeking them out, going blindly full of trust and hope to a single person they trust and love, having a moment of clarity and feeling like it was mutual with their person, the person speaking reality (going to parents for help), the moment on their face when they realize they truly are alone and out of control), being taken/having to flee…

And here we are, WTHeck did they end up with?!? Daisy in what may or may not be in a worse situation than had she gone with the flow (staying with Justin and having the parents’ good intentions deal with her), and Becka having been forced to go with the flow.

Impossible situations. Unknowable outcomes. Both could end in death or a whole new life. Most likely, both are headed to the same reality, where they are teenagers with whacky hormones who are going to have the burden of [not only saving June’s ‘original’ daughter, but also] bringing down Gilead to save the world.

And yet, how long will it be until they understand, they are on the same side?

If the foreshadowing continues, commenters who believe Becka will be spared (and her life being even less her own) are probably right!

She’ll be on a mission she really can’t refuse and might now be excited to accept; personal revenge to be had.

An aside:
Just goes to show, June does everything to get Hannah out. Since Hannah doesn’t ’know’ June—the ‘June’ June has become, her life will suck regardless, because she won’t even have this fabulous family reunion; she’ll having running, looking over her shoulder, guilt, pain, and shame probably, for all those who helped. Wwwwhhhhhhaaaaaaa where is the hope?!?

Having said all that, I’m so excited for them all next episode! 🤪😜

S1E1 Radio Questions

(Have never read either book, have seen all of THT, currently watching TT)

Before even a minute into the first episode, during the [epilogue] on screen, we heard what sounds like June.

Never caught (or grasped?) what was said, nor by whom, because we were busy reading the words on screen and the radio just sounded like general Radio Free Boston.

We hear a ‘click’, then June’s voice saying, “We’re fighting for you. For everyone still inside, keep your head down and stay safe.” And click, back to news.

Fast forward, now we understand why Daisy is a tad reckless using the radio; why she’s willing to risk it. A personal message has got to be the biggest motivator, as well as the only positive thing to look forward to (disregarding the fact there might be instructions 🙃).

It was made a point to give Daisy the radio, to have her sneak to listen to it, and to keep it hidden even though it could get this young teen tortured and/or killed.

It would seem as though she potentially could get needed info about what she needs to do from her handler and though the radio is ideal, not so much in her situation.

How long has she been (listening and hiding the radio) a Pearl before we meet her?

Was this a special concession for her from June or is it typical to anyone Mayday (presumably) has inside to be jeopardized like this?

Bonus hypothetical and highly subjective question:
If seeing others (show or book) listening to a radio is uncommon, and Daisy is taking extra risks, is June’s main objective is to save her daughter and hopefully bring down Gilead, or is June also willing to risk her own daughter to bring down Gilead if that’s what it takes?

Thanks, we genuinely want to hear everyone’s take, especially those familiar with both book and series!
