Over the first hurdle for Getting Rockbox on Y2

Over the first hurdle for Getting Rockbox on Y2

Currently got the application running over Solar / Android 4.4 on the Innioasis Y2 with the clean SuperSU binary it needs for its root dependencies.

Rockbox is currently looking in the sdcard0 mountpoint used by Y1 to find media in your library which means it can't play music, but I'll test a patch in a minute to add support for the Y2's sdcard1 mountpoint and give you all an update.

Solar booting on Y2.

It's alive on the Innioasis Y2! (Not available for download at this stage, just a teaser of things to come)

FM Radio hardware is present but has terrible antenna performance.

Haven't played a station on video so it doesn't get copyright flagged (not sure if that's a thing on Reddit)

But if you run the mediatek fm radio apk on Y2 you can tune into stations and hear them through headphones, but the signal is weak in a normal earphone wearing situation, worked well when wrapping the cable around the Y2

To be clear, the Y2 does not have the FM radio enabled in its software

Y2 internals. (The front view at least)

I unfortunately do not have the tools required to de-solder the RF shield to expose what DAC the Y1 is using.

Today in Solar: "Flow", Auto USB Connection, Podcast Speed Adjustment and More

Here's what's new in today's Solar custom firmware build for Innioasis Y1

  • Experimental Flow feature (see Settings > About > Debug & Experiments, which is an implementation of Jonathan del Strother's famous CoverFlow (fun fact: he sold the feature to Apple in 2006)
  • Home button in Quick Controls - you can hold the top button to bring the context menu and quickly go back to the home screen. (Useful if you encounter an issue or get stuck on a screen)
  • Playback speed adjustment for podcasts
  • Improved / Smoother Menu transition animations
  • 3D artwork perspective setting - you can now enable an iPod classic / Stock firmware like "slanted" album cover display, which integrates with the animations in "Flow" - just like on the iPod classic.
  • Automatic shutdown and Wi-Fi Sleep: two features to help prevent battery drain while your player isn't being used, timings can be adjusted in the menus
  • Fine scrubbing for media playback - press center button while on now playing screen to pinpoint where in a track you'd like to listen
  • Fixes for track sorting - you can order your tracks by track number. This wasn't in earlier releases but here now
  • Automatic USB connection setting - useful for when you connect your Y1 to your car stereo by USB, allowing you to navigate and browse your library using your car's head unit.
  • Reset menu: Granular reset options for resetting Rockbox config, erasing the contents of the built in MicroSD, clearing caches, resetting Solar and even an "Everything" option which leaves nothing but a fresh config.

Solar is still in early development so treat it as "for testing" than relying on it as a daily-driver, if you do decide to dip your toe in, you've still got Rockbox available from within Solar, so need to chose between the two :D

The Y2 came today

I like a lot of us took the plunge with ordering a Y2 from amazon when it came up briefly the first time around and I'm pleased to say it arrived today.

Its chonkier and heavier than Y1, has an iPod classic sized scroll wheel, it feels like the extra weight would translate to better battery, but my initial impressions are that it's basically just the Y1+

Certainly doesn't feel generational in any way, it's giving PS5 Pro.

The packaging was *chefs kiss* though. it came shrink wrapped and of significantly higher quality than the original Y1 box

Edit: I'll keep the post up to date with my opinions as I get to know the device, I'll test some of the things you've all commented if I can

Today in Solar: LCD Album artwork effect, power-saving during sleep and bug fixes

Users of the latest Solar build for the Innioasis Y1 will find a new feature: LCD album artwork effect - giving your album a dithered pixellated look perfect for use with certain retro / hacker aesthetic themes like ElsieD, TVA, Fall-Out Pip Boy and CyberPunk 2077

Theme creators can enable this effect with a line in their theme's config.json (this will not effect the theme's appearance on the stock firmware)

There are also a number of performance improvements and bug fixes:

Fixes to track sorting with albums sorted correctly by track, title, artist, name

Wi-Fi sleep on device inactivity to save power

Fixes for an inability to enable USB storage mode due to system keylayout used to accommodate Solar and Rockbox-Y1

Solar - Alternative Firmware / Launcher for Innioasis Y1 with Wi-Fi updates, Deezer Music and Podcasts (works with free accounts) - includes Rockbox-Y1 with fast switching

Solar aims to unlock the full potential of the y1 by making use of the hidden Wi-Fi hardware in meaningful ways, like streaming audio (Currently only with a Free / Premium Deezer account), some stock features like FM Radio and photo viewing have not yet been implemented but it is my hope to add these features in the future, with internet radio streaming planned also.

Experimental nightly builds of Solar are now available for testing. Check out the screenshots on the GitHub repo for an idea of what it has to offer :D

All feedback on is appreciated as it is likely to break in many and weird and wonderful ways.

Soulseek on an mp3 player probably wasn't on your bingo cards 😉

New Solar Builds available with improved Rockbox dual booting support

If you've ever switched from Rockbox to the Stock firmware to play a video, you'll know how frustrating it is to wait 3 minutes for the entire Y1 to restart.

With the latest builds of the Solar custom firmware, you can rapidly switch between Rockbox-Y1 and Solar with a click of the Quick Access Menu in Solar, or by heading to System > Switch to Stock Firmware in Rockbox

So it's super easy to head over to Solar from Rockbox to grab the latest episode of your favourite podcast, watch a video, or even stream that song you forgot to download to your Y1 using Deezer.

Solar is in an early stage of development at the moment but it'd be awesome if you could try it on your Y1 and say what you like and what needs to improve

Another feature is the ability to match the status bar text colour to the rest of a theme, this helps themes like u/Neither-Classic2058's ElsieD look their absolute best.

You can get Solar, and leave feedback on any issues you may encounter from Solar's GitHub
