A man at the pharmacy got mad I wouldn’t check if his prescription was ready

This happened yesterday after work. I stopped at the pharmacy inside my grocery store to pick up my own prescription and grab a few things for dinner. I was wearing black trousers and a blue fleece from my actual job, which is not even close to the pharmacy uniform. I also had a shopping basket with pasta, deodorant, and a sad little premade salad in it, so I feel like my “customer” status should have been pretty obvious.

While I was standing near the vitamin aisle waiting for the pharmacy line to go down, this older guy walked up and asked, “Can you check if my prescription is ready?” I said, “Oh, I don’t work here.” He stared at me like I had answered in another language and said, “You’re standing back here.” I was not behind the counter. I was near a shelf of fish oil capsules. I told him again that I was just waiting, and he snapped, “Well you could at least ask someone.” I said he could get in line and ask the actual staff, and he huffed like I had personally delayed his medication.

A few minutes later, I got to the counter and gave the pharmacist my name. The same guy was now behind me in line, watching everything. When the pharmacist handed me my bag, he loudly said, “So she can help herself but not anyone else?” The pharmacist looked confused, I looked tired, and I said, “I’m picking up my own prescription. Because, again, I do not work here.” The pharmacist actually laughed a little and said, “Sir, she’s a patient.” He mumbled something about “everyone looking like employees these days” and then complained that the line was too slow.

The best part was when he finally got to the counter and gave his name. His prescription wasn’t ready because his doctor hadn’t sent it in yet. So he had spent ten minutes being annoyed at a random woman in the vitamin aisle for not checking on a prescription that didn’t even exist in their system. I paid for my salad and left before he could somehow blame me for that too.
