Harshita and the horrible bullying culture in Mauritius

People in Mauritius seriously need to learn the difference between criticism and cyberbullying.

An influencer made a harmless video sharing her opinion, and suddenly people started making entire videos dedicated to mocking, insulting, humiliating, and abusing her publicly.

You can criticize someone’s points without degrading them as a human being.

People are acting like she’s some kind of public punching bag instead of an actual human being with emotions.

And honestly, this situation reflects a much deeper problem with Mauritian online culture.

We may have gone to school, gotten certificates, degrees, and jobs, but mentality-wise, a lot of people are still backwards and illiterate.

I’m seeing videos dedicated entirely to insulting and humiliating her, and the comments under those videos are even worse.

Some people are literally saying things like “bizin kass so liki”(she should be beaten)

For what exactly?

For posting an opinion online?

That’s the part that frustrates me the most. Mauritians feel like barbarians, for every minor inconvenience or disagreement, beating someone, breaking something, abuse and violence is all that comes to our minds

Sorry for the harsh words, but sometimes Mauritian social media genuinely feels barbaric. People behave like monkeys throwing shit at each other.

And before people twist this post: no, this is not about worshipping influencers or saying they can never be criticized.

Criticize them all you want.

But there’s a huge difference between:

“I disagree with what she said”

and

“Let’s collectively bully and dehumanize this person.”

In many other countries, people would either:

ignore the video,

laugh and move on,

or respond with counterarguments.

Here, people turn everything into public humiliation and mob harassment.

Paradise Island? My foot, that's only for the tourists.

Those who stay here know what type of mob-mentality we have to deal with

What’s even more disturbing is the hypocrisy.

If cyberbullying ever pushes someone to a breaking point, the same people participating in the harassment will suddenly start posting:

“Raise awareness for mental health”

“We should be kinder”

“We didn’t realize the consequences”

But where is that awareness while the bullying is actively happening?

Mauritians constantly preach respect and morality, yet the moment someone lives differently, expresses themselves differently, or simply exists publicly online, people act like that person no longer deserves basic human decency or even the right to live their life their own way.
