Is it just me, or do some older people in Mauritius treat young adults unfairly?

I'm 20 years old, and lately I've been wondering if anyone else in Mauritius has experienced this.

Yesterday, I was taking the metro because my dad couldn't drop me off for my exam. I have pretty bad motion sickness, so crowded public transport makes me feel nauseous and gives me a headache. I was sitting quietly, trying not to throw up.

Two elderly ladies came and stood next to me. After a few minutes, they started talking loudly about "youngsters these days" being lazy and disrespectful because they don't give up their seats. One of them even pointed at me and said, "Look at that girl. She's still sitting while two elderly people are standing."

What made me feel even worse was that someone was already sitting in one of the priority seats reserved for elderly passengers, but they ignored that person completely and chose to criticize me instead. Other passengers even started joining in. I felt so embarrassed and uncomfortable that I got off one station before my actual stop.

This isn't the first time I've noticed this kind of behavior. I've also had elderly people push past me at ticket machines or ask to skip the queue after I've already been waiting for a long time.

Then today at the bank, I had been standing in line for almost an hour when an older woman simply walked in front of me. I politely asked her to please join the back of the queue. She immediately replied that "young people these days have no manners towards elderly people." Even the police officer told her to stand in the queue, but she kept arguing that she was elderly and therefore shouldn't have to wait.

I want to be clear: I respect older people, and if I'm feeling well, I'm happy to offer my seat or help someone who genuinely needs it. But I don't think being older automatically gives someone the right to shame strangers or ignore queues, especially when they don't know what that person might be dealing with. Young people can have invisible illnesses, injuries, or simply be exhausted too.

Has anyone else in Mauritius experienced something similar, whether you're young or older? I'm genuinely curious whether this is becoming more common or if I've just been unlucky.

25F back in Mauritius for 2 months, looking to make new friends!

Hey everyone! 😊

I'm 25F and originally from Mauritius, but I've been living abroad for the past 5-6 years, so I don't really have much of a social circle here anymore.

I'm back for about 2 months and thought it would be fun to meet some new people and explore the island together!

If anyone's down to grab a coffee, hit the beach, go on random drives, hike, swim, take photos, try new food spots, or just yap, I'd love to meet some new people.

Feel free to DM me! We can definitely have a quick call beforehand too, for safety reasons 😆

Thankss!! :)

Can a non-resident take a regular prepay sim package or do I have to take the expensive “tourist” package?

I will be visiting Mauritius in a week and looking for options for a sim and mobile plans.

As per my T I found a regular prepay “Starter Pack” which seems to be suitable for my needs. (See screenshot)

However, they also have a tourist sim which is significantly more expensive (see screenshot)

As a non-resident would I be eligible for the normal Prepay sim plan or do I have to take the €30 plan?

If there are some other cheaper alternatives please assist. My plan is to get the sim and package at the airport.

With the new 48 team format of FIFA, do Mauritius stand a chance of qualification in any upcoming World cup ? Why at international level, we had not been much present although, lots of youth have passion playing football. I had been really impressed by the Cape Verde team and I thought of us.

We Lost the Sense of Good Tastes thinking Subjectivity Forgives Poor Tastes.

Taste is subjective, but it can still be good or bad. Let me explain.

If you prefer a Toyota over a BMW, that’s a genuine, respectable choice because you value reliability over driving experience. But when a person chooses a Jetour T2, it’s not a choice, it’s because they couldn’t afford the Land Rover Defender that’s six times more expensive, and that’s a cheap-ass move even though it’s an expensive machine especially for what it is.

To put everything into context, a high-end-close-to-real Rolex costs around the same price as an original Tissot, the latter is genuine, valuable, respectable, and the former is a cheap ass move at the price of the latter.

But since we are in the era of “we listen & we don’t judge”, just read this post and don’t judge me 😬

Want genuine realistic information on life in Mauritius for a foreigner. Any and all information ?

I am a retired woman on her own who has lived in France for the last 30 years. I have very recently discovered that as my mother was a Mauritian citizen by birth that I am entitled to claim residency - something that I am keen to investigate. However most of my information on Mauritius is very dated and although I have friends who have recently relocated I would like a less rose tinted view. I am totally French / English bilingual snd even understand some Creole, and I was reared on Mauritian food so those aspects are not daunting. I do not want to live an « ex Pat » life. I like people, gardening, cooking, painting, writing, reading, my animals and the sea. I am not wealthy, would have a small amount of money to bring with me and a small monthly income.
My worries :
What is the health care system like - both for me and my animals - and is it costly?

Accommodation - availability and cost. I cannot envisage living without a garden. Whilst I do not want to live in isolation I am used to living in a very tiny rural village. I would hate living in an expat community

Transport - I understand that it is necessary to own a car. Just as an example - at the moment I own a Peugeot 208 automatic which I like. How easy would it be to purchase tge equivalent in Mauritius and what would the cost be. I am not the most confident driver on the planet so really need a reliable car if public transport is difficult. What are the distances usually needed for normal daily life eg shopping, medical visits etc

Weather / climate - the temperature on my region in France last week was 44.7C. This winter there was a week when it was -10C. I don’t like either. When it’s hot I sit in the shade, when it’s cold I sit in the sun. Tell me about cyclones?

Anything else about life in Mauritius - I know Mauritians from birth having grown up in a community of Mauritians surrounding me. My experience is of a clean, extremely polite and courteous people, cultured, intelligent, educated, open and outgoing whi like to socialise, entertain and gamble and bring their children up very well.

Please give me your honest opinions, good and bad and from all walks of life. I don’t want to live in a rose tinted bubble.

Mauritius - best place to stay with family (teens and senior citizens), car rental, sims

Hi lovely people. While I found many related posts but I did not get what I am looking for.

So, we are a family of 6 (2 adults, 2 teens, 2 senior citizens) from India, are planning for a 6/7-day vacation in Mauritius during 3rd week of October (16-23 October). We are planning to cover these:

  1. Odysseo Oceanarium
  2. Blue Bay Marine Park
  3. Ile Aux Cerfs
  4. Curious Maritius
  5. Valle Adventure Park
  6. La Vanille Nature Park

Does this plan look decent for the group? Any alternate itinerary?

I was thinking we could stay at one location (Flic En Flac) and take a rented car to roam around - but open to split between Flic En Flac and close to Blue Bay.

All the hotels seem quite expensive and was looking for options to stay which are preferably:

  1. Close to the beach (walking distance)
  2. Restaurants nearby - 2 of us would be pure vegetarians, rest eat non-vegetarian as well
  3. Market/ shops close by for essentials or just grabbing something to eat
  4. Hopefully close to INR20,000/- per night for 3 rooms (seems highly unlikely though) - close to MUR10,000/- per night (Mauritius currency)
  5. Breakfast included, if option available

Please recommend some hotels/ airbnbs etc.

Also, any recommended car rental services? And which sim should I take for data/ calls?

Any other advice/ pointers I should take care of.

Thank you for your attention to this matter 😄

Mauritian Moving to Canada – Need Some Clarification

Hi everyone,
I’m moving to Canada this September as a permanent resident, and I need some clarification.
I’ve heard that liquid milk is not permitted to be brought into Canada, but I’ve received mixed information about powdered milk. Some friends say powdered milk is also prohibited, while others say it is allowed.
Could someone please clarify which is correct?

Thank you!

Is the new budget beneficial for everyone or just for a part of society?

I've been looking at some comments posted by Mauritians. I might be ignorant of some situations so I'm not judging people I'm just trying to understand.

Everyone seems to be mad that only some items got subsidised mostly canned food and baby food.

I don't get why the hate?

People are now saying they don't eat canned food like thon or macaroni etc but it is still one step forward right?

At least some people that were not able to afford a 20rs canned tuna can now get 2? It might not seems much but it is a relief for some.

I saw someone saying that their baby don't like this brand they prefer a much more expensive one. The thing is babies are expensive and is a life long commitment. Personally in this economy having a baby feels like a luxury most people cannot afford it but they always find a way to figure it out. I'm not shaming young parents but you knew that raising a child is not cheap and you walked in that responsibility fully aware of the costs.

This will make a few people rage but if we keep that same mindset of "prioritising elderly and babies" where does the young adult category fall in? The one where they don't want children? Does their opinion not matter because they chose to be child free? Because if the government had not subsidised baby product but other product it would still be a huge issue that baby products are expensive? What about those who don't buy those products? Those whose parents/grandparents prefer to mash up the baby's food like we used to do before? Is it really beneficial?

Again I'm just a bit confused and want some more understanding of this situation I hope I didn't offend anyone

Mauritians living abroad: How do you deal with constantly being assumed to be Indian?

I’m Mauritian living abroad, and one thing I’ve noticed is that almost everyone assumes I’m Indian. I understand why. Most people simply haven’t heard much about Mauritius, so they go with the closest identity they recognize.
What I struggle with is when conversations about India, or even anti Indian stereotypes and comments, are directed at me because people assume that is my identity. Sometimes I get approached by people asking if I’m Punjabi, or by Indians themselves who start speaking to me in Indian languages without checking first.
I want to be clear that I have nothing against India or Indians, and I’m not trying to imply that racism toward Indians is acceptable. It absolutely isn’t. But I’m Mauritian. Our culture, history, identity, languages, and the way we see ourselves are different, even when many of us have Indian ancestry.
For Indo-Mauritians living abroad, how often does this happen to you? Do you correct people every time, or do you eventually just get tired of explaining?
