Has anyone ever attended a Court hearing as a member of the public ?

Hello everyone. Law student here and every lecturer keeps briefly telling us about how court cases are open to the public in Mauritius and that we can always go an attend any case. I wanted to know if there was anyone here that ever attended any case and how the entire process goes? How early do I have to arrive there, are there even people in the public gallery or is it likely that I’m the only one there, and dress code etc. Thank you!

Is emigration to Canada or Australia still worth it ?

I am a 36 y.o. male. Been a high school teacher for like 10 yrs.

Wife is also 36 y.o. and have a gov job.

2 kids below 1 y.o.

We both have science related degrees and master degrees

We own our house and have a basic car. So no loans or anything. We have a mostly frugal lifestyle and try not to waste money.

It has never been in our plans to emigrate or anything. But with the current situation in the country and basically low career prospects for both me and wife, i have been thinking about it. Also for our children future.

Is it hard to get teaching jobs (for me) or office jobs (for her) in Canada or Australia?

Any advice?

Starting to plan a hindu wedding planning - looking for recs

Hi all!

My partner and I are beginning to plan our destination wedding in Mauritius. We are both Hindu from the US and plan to do a 3-4 day ceremony. Do you all have any recommendations for wedding planners or hotels to check out? Budget wise we are flexible, but we want to get a sense on what it will cost.

We are interested in staying on the western side, but are open to suggestions. We are also planning to visit for 3 days in end of November, so any recs for things to check then!

Would also love to hear about your experiences at Hindu weddings in Mauritius as locals or tourists :)

Seeking Advice & Experiences...Please share any past experiences or advice you may have regarding hospital bills in the UK for visitors without health insurance.

I have a disabled sister who recently visited us in the UK with our elderly parents for two months. Unfortunately, during their stay, she became seriously unwell with respiratory problems and required urgent medical treatment, resulting in a seven-day hospital admission.

As they did not have health insurance, we have now received a substantial medical bill. I completely understand that the costs need to be addressed, and I am not asking about having the bill written off. However, I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation and may have advice on whether there is scope to negotiate the amount or arrange a more manageable payment plan, particularly considering her disability and the fact that she was travelling with elderly parents.

Any practical advice, personal experiences, or guidance on who we could approach would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help and advice.

Is the actually fuel price hike justified and how long before everything else follows?

Been living in Mauritius for a few years now, and since I dnt drive much, I mostly use taxis to get around. Was heading to grand baie this weekend and, as usual, ended up having a nice chat with the driver and funny enough, I get a lot of local news just from these conversations.

We were talking about the latest fuel hike and he told me things are already quite difficult financially, work isn’t that great, and costs just keep increasing. He hasn’t increased his prices yet, but he said it will probably come eventually because at some point they simply won’t have much choice.

Over the years I’ve seen fuel prices go up, but also come down a few times. What I’m trying to understand is why the ripple effect seems to work mostly in one direction.

When fuel goes up, we hear that transport, deliveries, food and services will eventually cost more. But when fuel comes down, those prices rarely seem to follow.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I can’t remember my taxi fare ever going down after a fuel price decrease.

Users of 'Cart_in' Mauritius...............How to?

As a regular online buyer, I really want to try out 'Cart_in' to buy from Amazon(fr). I just wanted to know from others who have used Cart_in, are all purchases made through the mobile app itself? After the app has calculated the billing amount, is there any thng else to pay afterwards? In the event of a damaged or a non working product, what is the proceedure for exchange or returns? And, I see that there is free shipping for some products, is the free shipping only for first time buyers?

Visiting Mauritius with my partner and our 1 year old

We'll be visiting Mauritius next month with our 1 year old. Will be staying at Bel Ombre so we already have Chamarel, Le morne, La Vanille, Odysseo & Caudan waterfront in our itinerary. We had planned for Trou aux Cerfs initially but changed our mind due to concerns over chikungunya. Is there anything we could add or change in the itinerary to make the trip more memorable?

Thanks for your inputs.

International student moving for Big 4 internship – Need realistic rent & cost of living advice! 🇲🇺

Hi everyone!I just landed an internship at a Big Four firm in Mauritius starting soon. I am super excited, but as an international student, I am trying to figure out the logistics, especially accommodation and budgeting.

My office will be located in the Ébène / Moka area. From my initial research online, rent directly in Ébène or Moka seems incredibly expensive (Rs 35,000+), which is way over my student budget!I would love to get some realistic advice from locals or expats currently living there:

-Where should I look for affordable housing? I heard that towns nearby like Quatre Bornes, Rose Hill, or Beau Bassin are cheaper and connected to Ébène via the Metro Express. Is this a good strategy for a daily commute? What is a realistic rent price?

-How much should I expect to pay for a private room in a shared apartment (colocation) or a small studio in those nearby towns? What is the total monthly cost of living? Excluding rent, how much should I budget monthly for groceries, utilities, internet, and using the metro/buses

-Where can I find student listings? Are there specific Facebook groups, local websites (like Lexpress Property), or student housing networks you recommend to find roommates?

Any tips on saving money as a student or navigating the area would be highly appreciated. Thank you so much in advance! 🙏

Do you have any recommendations for Mauritius in general, and especially for mosquito repellent that actually works?

Hi!
We’re travelling to Mauritius for the first time in September and are already very excited! Do you have any tips on things we should keep in mind? We already have a travel adapter for the power outlets and are planning to pack long (linen) trousers for the evenings. Is there a mosquito repellent that works particularly well against the local mosquitoes? Are there any other things we should think about or prepare in advance? Thank you very much!

October honeymoon, 14 nights in Mauritius, first time traveling outside of Europe

Hi everyone, me and my fiancé are planning our honeymoon right after the wedding to be in Mauritius!

For 2 weeks we will be staying at the radisson azuri hotel with just breakfast and we want to rent a car to explore the island. How safe is it to be driving around even after sundown and maybe even after midnight?

Is there something that we should absolutely do or absolutely not do?

Hopeless about my acne (I need advice please help me)

So I've been battling acne for more than 7 years. I used to get big red pimples all over my face and went on 2 rounds of acnetane. It improved a lot but now I'm left with those tiny tiny white pimples all over my face. My skin looks red and has a lot of scarring from the big pimples in the past. But I can say that my skin is so much better than what it used to look like. Trust me I've tried everything. I went to a lot of dermatologists, have a good skincare routine I don't use acids a lot and I don't overexfoliate I keep everything gentle. I barely eat white rice and bread and avoid sugar and fast food at all cost. Yet my skin still breaks out. I get one or two big pimples occasionally but mostly those tiny white pimples everyday when I wake up. Please help me. I'm getting depressed because of this and my self confidence is gone. I also notice that my skin gets better during my period. I get flare ups before and after my period. But I still get those white pimples everyday and it's so frustrating because I know I've done everything... I also change my pillowcase frequently, I don't let my hair touch my face and drink a lot of water.

Title: Mauritius 10-night trip — need help planning the stay 🇲🇺

Planning 10 nights in Mauritius in late September and want to explore as much as possible.
Budget: ₹2 lakh for 2 people (excluding flights), including hotels, activities, car rental + food/drinks.
Hotel budget: ₹60–70k total.
My main questions:

1 hotel or 2–3 bases? We’ll have a rental car and want to explore the whole island.

Best area for beach + nightlife? We’d love to walk to the beach every evening and have restaurants/bars nearby.

Is it smart to mix ₹10k/night nicer stays with ₹3–4k/night budget stays on activity-heavy days?

Which areas should we stay in to cover North + West/South + East/Southwest efficiently?

Is the seaplane worth the money? Or better to spend that budget on other experiences?

For late September, which areas would you personally choose?
Would really appreciate advice from people who have actually done a Mauritius road trip, especially on where you’d stay and what you’d skip! 🙏

So… private beaches aren’t actually a thing in Mauritius?

Saw the news about Shakeel Mohamed’s visit to Pointe d’Esny and the push to remove barriers, ropes and signs blocking public access to the coast.

I genuinely thought some beaches here were private, especially around hotels, villas and campements.

Is the rule basically that the whole coastline is public, or is it more complicated than that?

Also curious if anyone has actually been stopped or told a beach was “private”.

Mauritius Trip — 5N/6D, 3 guys — Looking for Suggestions

Hey everyone! We’re a group of 3 guys visiting Mauritius for the first time in 1st week of Oct.

This itinerary was initially suggested by Claude, so before we lock anything in, I’d love to hear from people — what should we add, remove, or change?

Day 1 – Arrival + Grand Baie

Land early morning → check-in → Grand Baie beach → relaxed evening/dinner.

Day 2 – Catamaran + Grand Baie

Full-day Northern Islands catamaran (Gabriel Island/Coin de Mire) → snorkeling, BBQ, drinks → Grand Baie nightlife.

Day 3 – Chamarel + Le Morne

Check out → Chamarel (Seven Coloured Earth + waterfall) → rum tasting → Le Morne → quad biking + sunset → stay around Flic en Flac/Le Morne.

Day 4 – Casela

Full day at Casela Nature Parks → safari, activities, maybe lion walk → relaxed evening at Flic en Flac.

Day 5 – Île aux Cerfs

Full-day trip → lagoon/beach → possibly jet ski/parasailing → final dinner and drinks.

Day 6 – Departure

Early morning flight.

We’re staying 2 nights in the north and 3 nights in the west to avoid a long drive to the airport on departure day.

Would love suggestions on:

- Anything important we’re missing

- Anything that’s overrated/not worth the time

- Whether the itinerary is too packed

- Better places to stay

- Must-do activities/restaurants

- Any tips for driving/parking

We want to cover the classic Mauritius highlights without rushing through everything. Thanks!

Rainwater harvest system in private house : any feedback?

Hello,

I am planning to build a house next year, and would like to install a rainwater harvest system. I would like to use the water to water the garden , wash the car and to flush the toilets.

Any tips for me ? I am looking for companies/contractorsthat designs and install the system. I am not looking for the random plumber who improvises.

Thanks for sharing !
