Incoming Mechanical Engineering student — Dell XPS 16 vs Zephyrus G16

Hey everyone,
I’m starting Mechanical Engineering this fall and I’m trying to decide between two laptops before classes begin. I’ll be using SolidWorks, MATLAB, ANSYS, and the usual engineering software over the next few years.

Option 1: Dell XPS 16 (DA16250) — $2,500
Intel Core Ultra 7 255H
RTX 5060
32 GB RAM
1 TB SSD

Option 2: ASUS Zephyrus G16 — $2,800
Intel Core Ultra 9
RTX 5070 Ti 12 GB
32 GB RAM
1 TB SSD

I’ve seen the XPS in person and I really like the size, build quality, and more professional look. The G16 seems to offer significantly better performance for only about $300 more, but I’m not sure if that extra GPU power will actually matter for a mechanical engineering student. I was also looking at the ProArt p16 but I’m not sure.

My priorities are:
Reliability for 4+ years
Solid battery life for classes
Good thermals/noise
Enough performance for CAD, simulations, and some gaming on the side

Thank you for your help.

I really love how the XPS looks and feels but I’m discouraged by all the negative posts I’ve seen.

My priorities are:
Reliability for 4+ years
Solid battery life for classes
Good thermals/noise
Enough performance for CAD, simulations, and some gaming on the side

Thank you for your help.
