Can somebody help me understand what’s going on with these old devices?
Morning friendos.
So as far as I can tell from here and other subreddits, Amazon have basically stopped support for some of their much older devices. To my understanding, this means you guys with these cannot download new books from the kindle store. This sounds irritating if you’re into that ecosystem, because you can’t get new books via Amazon any more without getting a new kindle.
Now this has happened, I see a bunch of posts here and in other ereader subreddits about it, and they’re not positive. People saying they’re leaving Amazon, getting e-readers from other companies etc.
As far as I can tell, these other companies have other ways to get books. Be it their own downloady thing, or just using other methods online (project gutenberg, other vendors, or just loading their own books onto the device).
What I don’t get is (and this is where I need some clarification) is why are people getting new devices (like Kobo) for this? These devices can’t download books from Amazon either (as far as I know) so surely in practice it’s the same as having an unsupported kindle device? Can these older kindles not be used the same way? Can they not receive any books at all using calibre and things like that?
With such a big outcry I know I’m just missing something, so thought I’d ask the people in the know!
Just seems backwards to me to buy a whole new ereader, just to do the same things on it that the unsupported kindle can do?
Cheers in advance.
