Can somebody help me understand what’s going on with these old devices?

Morning friendos.

So as far as I can tell from here and other subreddits, Amazon have basically stopped support for some of their much older devices. To my understanding, this means you guys with these cannot download new books from the kindle store. This sounds irritating if you’re into that ecosystem, because you can’t get new books via Amazon any more without getting a new kindle.

Now this has happened, I see a bunch of posts here and in other ereader subreddits about it, and they’re not positive. People saying they’re leaving Amazon, getting e-readers from other companies etc.

As far as I can tell, these other companies have other ways to get books. Be it their own downloady thing, or just using other methods online (project gutenberg, other vendors, or just loading their own books onto the device).

What I don’t get is (and this is where I need some clarification) is why are people getting new devices (like Kobo) for this? These devices can’t download books from Amazon either (as far as I know) so surely in practice it’s the same as having an unsupported kindle device? Can these older kindles not be used the same way? Can they not receive any books at all using calibre and things like that?

With such a big outcry I know I’m just missing something, so thought I’d ask the people in the know!

Just seems backwards to me to buy a whole new ereader, just to do the same things on it that the unsupported kindle can do?

Cheers in advance.

Girlfriend bought me a new kindle. Every single Stephen King book on there.

My old kindle needed replacing badly, battery life was non existent, super dead, been reading physical books again for a while.

GF bought me a new kindle. She had set it up for me, and when I turned it on she had put every single published Stephen King book on it. I was at a loss for words! Probably the best gift I’ve ever received.

If course I’m going to read every single one, probably in publication order. This will be some journey.

Get busy living or get busy dying.

Just finished Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption

I have to preface and say I’ve never seen the movie, nor did I know anything about the storyline.

Started and finished it today due to the length, but what an absolutely wonderful book. Beautifully done and genuinely left me with tears in my eyes, but happy ones.

10/10.

I downloaded a lot of games during lockdown and for a while after. To be honest, I didn’t really play many of them. I have a controller that I’ve used for games like Stardew, and it works great.

What I need some help with is determining which games are really worth my time at this stage. I’ve attached screenshots of all the downloads. Could you guys take a look and give me some thoughts on which games are worth keeping and playing? Would be helpful if you could let me know which can utilise a controller and which can’t.

Really am looking to keep the ‘great’ games and get rid of the shite.

Thanks in advance.
