How do we survive if the Brazil election results go the way we think.

Flavio won the first round of elections in Brazil and it seems that none of the third parties have been willing to give their endorsement to either side (very cowardly)... I don't understand these people, these news, people, these pundits, all of them. Why doesn't anyone talk about the survival chances of the human species. They just leave you with X won the election. Hello? What now? You're just gonna let us go extinct???

Brazil is in control of the world's largest tropical rainforest and most of the potential geoengineering bandaids that we could use to keep it from falling apart involve being present on their territory. I can only think of one that wouldn't, that being marine cloud brightening over international waters near the Amazon. That means regardless of the government in the United States in 2029 most of the options for keeping that rainforest on life support are gone, because he will never consent to the necessary cloud seeding. Supposedly, this is going to end in 2031 but I don't know if that's the case, because there's no reason to believe he'll ever leave power. Maybe a determined enough United States government could make it happen. I don't know.

If Lula loses, which looks like is going to happen, it's the fault of those cowardly third-party candidates that were not willing to give endorsements when the survival of the human species was on the line. But I don't want to play blame games. I want to find a way to stop it. I want people to find another way. And that's the problem. Everybody's stumbling around in the dark and not willing to deal with the obvious existential risk.

I know one thing. I'm not staying here if what I do doesn't matter. My existence has costs and I'm not going to continue unless somebody has a plan to patch the hole. It doesn't have to be perfect, Flavio's administration can suck in a thousand ways and I'm fine. As long as the existential stuff is taken care of.

All people who take meds: How do you do naps?

Sleep meds by design are meant to help you get your main sleep at night (or for people with night jobs during the day, etc.) that is good, and we should be moving towards a consistent pattern of sleep but there's always times when you do something and it's just so exhausting that you need to take a nap. For those who take long acting medications like the new orexin drugs, how do you fall asleep for these naps?

For context, I'm attempting to quit adult content/pmo, which I've used for many years to self-medicate insomnia. I have ethical problems with it, and it also just doesn't work that well anymore (the analogy I like to use is oil and gas). I used to be able to take naps but as life has gotten more stressful over the past (almost) two years now (c Nov 2024) I can be as tired as I want to and I will never go to sleep if I don't use (one of the reasons it doesn't work well, the more tired you are, the less of a hit you get, and the less safe it feels). The meds I'm considering using are great for long term sleep and reducing nightmares (one for nightmares, and one for falling asleep) but they suck at naps. I don't have as many nightmares when I nap anyway because the sleep is shorter but I do need something to put me to sleep, I don't want to have an excuse to use.

Edit: What I'm picking up from these comments is basically that I should process my emotions and just stay up until bedtime (which, for family reasons, is usually 2am). Not what I wanted to hear, but oh well...

Is anyone willing to test out libheif decoding?

I wanted HEIC decoding to be available on browsers other than Safari so I figured I may as well start myself. The code changes are available here and I doubt they're production ready but I wanted to start because I know you've been swamped. I don't know how to do regression testing, so I probably won't try this myself. I'd love if someone, whether a maintainer or a hobbyist, is willing to do some regression testing on a custom Docker image or debug server and make it into a workable feature that could be added into another release.

WTF is wrong with the charging design on this thing.

FP4 daily driver about a year and charging has been a problem no matter what way I've tried to handle it. No wireless charging pre-configured which is a decision that makes sense for about five seconds until you realize that getting your charging port fixed takes as much energy as whatever the waste from wireless charging over the phone's lifetime.

When I finally did get wireless charging, I was unable to find the kind of pass-through port that I would have needed to be able to leave the wireless charging pad plugged in and charge the phone with a cable or plug it in via USB. I'm very lucky to have a local network with tons of network storage, so that second one was not that big a deal, but I need to be able to charge with a cable when there is no wireless charging available. Having to unplug and plug back in the little wireless charging receiver eventually broke the fragile little conductor connecting it to the port, ruining the wireless charging receiver.

So then I just decided to use the pass-through port thing that was the source of my problems originally, a 2-way USB hub (that never seemed to work with thumb drives on either of the ports, BTW). The problem with that stupid thing is it's also a USB port and it faces down which makes it very vulnerable to lint and dust. So now I have two ports to babysit. In so far as I ever need to prop the phone up, I have to take that thing off because it makes it unstable, and I have the other port that I actually use for charging on the USB hub. The USB hub is just a glorified charging protector, for all I know it was just a scam, and the data cable isn't even a valid data cable that can actually transmit any data at all. I have never been able to use that sideport even once.

Well, in any case, that bottom port got filled up with lint, and so it stopped charging, just like what would repeatedly happen to my phone itself before I had any of this add-on junk. I used cable charging for the last six months of having my S9, maybe more, and it never had that problem. I don't know why, but it just never had that problem. But the elephant in the room about the S9 is that it had a backup, it had wireless charging. I don't know what to say, I would love solutions or advice, but I'm just pissed. I just missed a therapy appointment because my alarm didn't go off and I slept through it cuz this stupid phone battery died.

The FP7 better correct this error by having leads that go out to the battery cover, and an optional wireless charging cover that you can buy. I swear, driving a mile to get your charger fixed every couple of months is much worse for the environment than just using the damn wireless charging.

Have to find a different way to sleep or I'll blow what little money I have

I recognized the third close call I've had this year to going onto paid (online) services. Historically, I've been able to restrain myself from going there or even looking at the links but this year it's been getting worse, I don't know if it's the stress of trying to change my life (my whole career plan has had to change since November 2024 and I'm finally making those changes now) or what. I don't have a lot of money and I'm not the kind of person to pay for video games or really any form of entertainment (I really just watch movies with other people that have Netflix accounts). So this is very uncharacteristic of me, but I guess it's what happens when you get too comfortable. I remember in the old days (when I was still addicted) I would get spooked by my behavior and I would pull back. For the most part, that hasn't happened recently (other than the day before yesterday, weirdly enough).

I got close enough to see when the 75% offer expires. I know it's a trap to get you hooked. And they leave it open for five days, unlike almost every other free offer that you get that is only available for minutes or hours because they know that you might have the discipline to say no and they want to leave it open long enough for you to fail. Luckily, everywhere I've gone so far has either been extremely expensive or requires you to make an account, and I have not done so yet (God willing I never will). I've asked my doctor twice for a referral to a sleep study and have not heard anything about the referral so I'm thinking of just taking matters into my own hands and getting a mat for under my bed to track my sleep. And then just taking it to a doctor and saying, look, this is not healthy and this is what every single night since early November 2024 has looked like, do you have some ideas? My plan is to use naltrexone after I have some kind of alternative way of getting to sleep, but I can't just get 12 hours of sleep a week. As bad as the nightmares that I have are they are my natural physiological state right now and I'm pretty confident that I would not be able to get a healthy amount of sleep at all without this addiction. I'm going to try to take a medicine-heavy approach even as someone who is very skeptical about medicine because I'm very desperate and I just don't have the time. Last time it took me 3 years before I was finally able to sleep at night without it and that whole time, I was able to take naps without it. And it still took three years and this time I can count on my hands how many times I've been able to take a nap or get any kind of sleep without it since January 20th of last year.

I'm done having to shoo my cat out of my room and then begging her to come back in when I'm done which must be crazy-making to the poor baby. I'm done having to worry about whether I'm gonna blow my money at a very fragile time financially on this stuff. I do feel like I'm finally getting to a breaking point at least inside. Even though the tolerance is pretty extreme, and I'm probably going to need medication to quit. The plan is going to be take Naltrexone for several weeks in order to stop using as well as taking several sleep medications depending on what the problem I find with my sleep is. Hopefully, in the long term, I'll get better sleep with fewer nightmares where I wake up well rested rather than just the biological bare minimum. I also want to lead by example and stop being such a hypocrite.

Can I go back to a pre-OCR release version, import a bunch of photos, and go back.

As many of you know, a regression in the metadata parsing function in immich has destroyed the functionality of the TZ environment variable as a fallback for time zone on photos that don't have a time zone included. https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/24116#discussioncomment-17103543

I just discovered a corrupted SD card that I have a good chance of being able to recover. That SD card would have several thousand photos on it. These photos generally have perfect metadata, except for the makernotes at the end, which is the only thing that includes the time zone. The makernotes doesn't survive the file carving process. No way I'm going to be able to geotag them all in a couple of weeks. The problem is the only versions of immich that support using the TZ environment variable as a fallback are pre-OCR versions. So I'm wondering what the best practices are for rolling back to such a version to import all of those photos. Is simply cutting and pasting the OCR folder out of the immich database and then re-composing with a lower version good enough? Or is there something else I would have to do?

WebP rotation tag

So I understand in the web app, WebP rotation is not supported because the app expects the browser to do it. The thumbnail will come out correct, but when you zoom in, the picture will be its original shape. Both the mobile app and local gallery can handle this but browsers can't.

I'm wondering if you could embed a client side rotation feature into the app for WebP photos. This would be preferable, but if you can't do that for security or complexity reasons, simply discarding the original and refusing to show it in the web client like with HEIC pictures would be okay (I have a utility that allows you to view your photos natively over SMB).

I understand that features like this have security risks, the 360 Panorama feature allowed for XSS attacks a while back. So feel free to take your time.

Reverse geocoding for time zones

One of the major ways Immich discovers time zones in photos is by reverse geocoding. In the timezone profiles that Immich uses for reverse geocoding, are the historical changes in timezone (NOT DST, but historical changes made by gov'ts) included? Obviously, to a reasonable distance in time, like 1975 or 2000.

Withdrawals suck

Had a link to a very softcore video for the past week or so saved in my clipboard, one of the ones I used every couple days. Too long to feasibly download which I usually do because of last time this happened. Then the uploader took it down, and I started hysterically searching for any copies, archives, the original source, etc. Gave up, used something else, took a nap, woke up, and did it again. Eventually I gave up for now (hopefully) and shook for an hour.

A month ago (actually almost two) a whole bunch of the main channels I watched got taken down because they were on public platforms and violated the Terms of Service. In that case, it was entire channels that got taken down. I felt the same way, and I initially saw it as a learning experience that I needed to stop using altogether but then they started popping back up in different places and they usually posted their stuff to multiple platforms, etc. The same kind of obsessive searching that I just did today, and the moment that I found it again, I started downloading it because my nervous system throws a temper tantrum when I can't give it exactly what it wants. This time it's a lot more obscure and I doubt I'll ever find it again, which means I have to suffer. It also means this isn't all gonna be for nothing like it was last time. So hopefully some good comes out of it.

I can only imagine how hard it is for people addicted to hard drugs...

We weren't built for this (TW mild political themes)

I've struggled with porn and sexual fantasy since puberty, got a lot worse over the last 18 months. I'm not on the subreddit specifically for my problems because I don't want to be partisan in spaces meant for recovery but I need to vent.

>!We weren't built for this the human body and mind isn't built for it. The old wisdom was that you never knew whether your work would matter even if you didn't see any fruits in your whole life, maybe someday it will. But with the existential threats to humanity that exist now (chiefly global warming and nuclear war which are synergistic) I think we'll know within 2-3 years whether anything we've ever done will have any meaning. I can already feel that in the day to day activities of life (other than things that are specifically political) they feel completely empty because healthy things are all about long term reward and making other people's lives better so they can pay it forward... Whether life has meaning or not should not be something that is in the hands of politicians or can be destroyed by one bad election result but that's where we live now. Maybe other people can do things like hospice care and throw their energy and creativity into a black hole but it's not my strongsuit. !<

>!The simple answer is "don't let it happen" but unfortunately I'm not the king of the world so there are things partially or fully out of my control (I want to move more things into my sphere of control ideally). And one of those things is whether my work has any meaning. I still try to do the work but I don't feel like there's any such thing as healthy comfort until the problem is solved and obviously that's a vicious cycle because using doesn't help me become a more capable person. I don't know if there's any answers to this other than "skill issue" because it's completely unprecedented. It's like Frankl said "He who has a Why to live for can bear almost any How." Never before have we had a regime in power anywhere with the power to destroy every possible Why...!<

Good options for bulk scanning printed photos

After testing my ADS 1500W, I realized it's not good at scanning printed photos. Way too many JPEG artifacts, some mild color banding, etc. Still very useful for documents, old schoolwork, but not photos. I still have thousands of printed photos that I want to get rid of. What are my options for bulk scanning those photos without breaking the bank? I'm thinking of something that I could rent, or a trip that I could take to a library or something? Because I'm only going to need to scan printed photos with this thing, I won't need it for very long. Anything that's left over, I can just use a flatbed scanner because there isn't that much of it. But I have a full box of printed photos, and I want some insight as to how to scan them efficiently...

EDIT: I'd reaally prefer to have it be a rental or something like that because I live in a small space; the last thing I need is to have even more stuff. My ideal is to put any photo I want to scan to the side, finish my documents, put away the ADS, and then rent the photo scanner for a week or so. The lease would mean accountability to send it back, I know that resale is an option but I know myself too well.
