Buffer playback in Plex, but JellyFin works!?

Buffer playback in Plex, but JellyFin works!?

Hello all.

I've used both Plex and Jellyfin for sometime. I love Plex apart from the fact I never had Premium so any movies would always buffer - ergo, JellyFin was my saviour for any local streaming.

Tonight, I bit the bullet and upgraded to PlexPass Lifetime subcription for all features, and of course HQ transcoding. (NOW I can bin JellyFin I'm thinking hastily).

HOWEVER - no matter what I try, all my movies STILL buffer using Plex? I have restarted everything, troubleshooted ever single nuance. Run troubleshooting through Claude - no luck.

Am I missing something in the small print - why does Jellyfin play all my files so effortlessly, and Plex is struggling. I have a Google Streamer Client with GB Ethernet hardware connection.

My local windows laptop plays the files just fine. Only difference I can see is DIRECT PLAY versus DIRECT STREAM....

Help!????

Do I really need a lifetime pass?

I'm at the party very late here, only setup a joke synology nas for the abundance of family photos and movies stored by my wife and children this year.

So, got plex free up and running just fine, but then realised what hardware encoding was and why I needed it. Any medium sized video just stalls, hence jellyfin to the saviour. However, the gap on ui is evident but it does fix hw encoding.

Now plex have a lifetime pass hike in July, I'm considering buying the pass for my VERY BASIC Usage.

2 questions....

1 - does the lifetime pass fix my stalling hw encoding playback just like jellyfin does?

2 - why is plex so popular? I don't get it? I'm not using streaming capabilities, but am I missing a trick here, what are other folks using PLEX for that I'm not?

If I can justify the above 2, then it might be worth the plunge?

Just had my first DS420+ (good quality, second hand). I am struggling with High Def movie files buffering (whirling yellow wheel) after about 30 seconds of playing via Plex to my TV.... Any help or ideas - here's my setup.

* DS420+, 3 x 4TB WD RED, 4GB RAM, No NVME upgrade. All SMART checks clear.
* 1,000Mbps LAN connectivity to a Local Virgin Cable Router
* Google TV Streamer - 1,000 Mbps LAN (hardwired) to 1,000 Mbps router hub port
* Virgin Cable Router 3 x 1,000Mbps, 1 x 2.5GBPS
* No other notable or hungry devices on the LAN.

I am trying to stream some relatively high-def 1080p, MP4 files (one is around 4GB another is a mere 600MB) 30fps, HEVC. Most are just Phone footage on Galaxy S or GoPro.

Around 30seconds into a large file on Playback via Plex, they just stall with this whirring Yellow progress bar.

I thought the culprit was my Gen1 Kindle Fire stick on WiFi - so I've upgraded to a new GOOGLE TV STREAMER with 1GB RJ45 interface to hardwired and literally no difference in performance?

Any ideas from the community on this buffer and best routes to resolve? Or is this expected with these meaty heavy files?
