I built a mobile word game entirely in French and it turned out to be a fun way to build vocabulary
Hello everyone! I am a French speaker and a huge fan of word games. I always found that French had very few good mobile word games compared to English, so I spent a few months making one myself. It is called Ratatouille de mots (photo attached so you know what to look for on the stores).
The concept is simple: you get a grid of letters and a theme, and you swipe to trace the 5 hidden words that match the theme. Early themes are easy everyday vocabulary like fruits, colors or food. Later themes get more clever and teach you real French wordplay, like "a color hides inside each word": maNOIR contains NOIR, guiMAUVE contains MAUVE. There are also themes built on French expressions, like things you can lose in French (la tête, le nord, la face).
I think it works nicely for learners because every level groups words around one topic, so you review vocabulary in context instead of random lists. And the letters are right there in the grid, so even when you do not know a word yet, you can find it and learn it.
It is free on iOS and Android, made by just me on my spare time. If you try it, I would love to hear if the difficulty feels right for learners. Merci beaucoup et bon courage avec votre français !
