Am I insane to leave a stable job I got promoted in a month ago?

I (24) currently work in the entertainment industry not in LA but for a museum. In my current job I just got promoted from an entry position to a mid entry level position. I have been in my job for 3 years starting off as an intern then got full time position then got my first promotion last month.

I make around $30 an hour. I have insurance, a non profit retirement and get a bonus at the end of the year depending on how the institution did and tons of other nice perks. With my promotion I can now work hybrid where before I was full time in office all day. I live an hour away from the office with parents to save rent. So being hybrid is a huge plus. My job is pretty secure as my team is only 5 and I hold down the fort as my bosses do bigger projects.

Ive been applying to jobs in LA to be with my partner (they live an hour and half away from LA) for the past couple of years and now recently got an offer. It is to be an assistant editor for a company. It will start off as contract to hire for 3 months then depending if I do a great job and meet the overall fit of the team. The company and the client will decide if I can become permanent. They wanted me to start next week. I live 5-6 hours away from LA I negotiated a later start date for mid June.

Now, this is a dream job as I want to be a video editor. My current position I do everything from editing, shooting and producing. My partner and a friend are planning to move to LA in September once our friend lease is up. So I will essentially be looking for a room lease until I can move in with them. I have 12k saved up with 2k in credit Debi and a $10k car loan.

What is putting me off is being a contracted worker. I’m sure I can get be permeant because I’m confident in my skills but in the scenario I don’t get the job I’m kind of fucked in our job market and the industry I’m in is not doing too great. I also have to find a place to live. I don’t have much friends and those who do live in LA have a small apartment or I’m not that close with. If I can couch surf for a 4 months then I will be all game but I can’t.

My plan B is stay here and keep applying to jobs. Wait for my partner and friend move to LA in September and if I get job after that I can move.

My partner is suggesting I stay and keep saving money which I kind of agree with. It’s a big gamble to move right now.

Take an assistant editing contract or stick with stability?

Hey yall!!

I would like some advice. I recently got offered a job to be an assistant editor (I want to work in post) for a 3 month contract with a possibility to be a full time. The producer told me it’s a big chance and most of the time people become full time. I currently live in Monterey and work at the aquarium as an associate producer. I recently got promoted and can work hybrid now. I would make around the same amount of money $1200 a week or 30/hr. I have 12k saved. My partner have been wanting to move to LA for a the past three years and now I have a chance to move and bet on myself.

The problem is one I’m scared of the contract and the job not being totally stable. I don’t like the idea of 3 months I can have no job. Two is waiting until September to move in with my partner and friend. I currently pay no rent and live with my parents an hour south of Monterey so I commute two hours to work. If I take the job then I would look for a room to lease until then.

Should I say fuck it and move to LA to see what happens or keep applying to jobs and see what I get later down the road.

Should I take a chance at AE gig with a possibility of it being full time or stick to stability.

Hey yall!

So I am in a predicament. Long story but I currently worked as a production assistant (film) for an aquarium on the central coast of California but got promoted last Monday to associate producer. I have worked at my job for 3 years starting as intern then being a contracted production assistant to becoming permanent and now an associate producer. Also I live in an hour away from my job living in my parents house and pay no rent.

My partner and I are long distance and I have been actively applying to jobs in LA because we are tired of long distance but also we got a friend to join us with moving to LA. We would want to move to LA around August. My partner as mentioned to me if I can’t move right away thats okay.

This past week I got an interview to be an assistant editor for a post house with a three month contract to start. The producer told me that the company does this and almost every one gets moved to full time afterwards. It would be $1200 a week and in person Monday through Friday. At the time my current job I was getting paid $25 an hour so the assistant editor job would be a jump in career and money. I’ve had two interviews and I’m waiting for a response. I believe I did a good job so I’m optimistic. The job would start in Late May. I could rent a room but I would be looking for a month to month lease so I can move in partner in August so I don’t know if it’s worth it.

A huge problem is If I get the job and accept the offer I would have to commute from Lebec (I would be staying with my partner and their family) to Culver City everyday until August when my partner and friend can move. Which sucks but I would love to be an assistant editor especially the work I would do is something I thought I would never do. Another con is that there is no career ladder I would be stuck as an assistant editor with small pay raises yearly. Also at my current job I spent 1.5 years being a contract worker until I was converted full time I don’t know if I want to do this again and there being a possibility of not getting that full time puts me off.

Now another is the problem I got a promotion last Monday with a raise ($62,000, salary now) and I am able to go hybrid now. This promotion is awesome because I get paid more and I can work remote two days out of the week. But now I’m at a predicament of me having the chance to go into post production which is what I always wanted or stay where I am at and keep applying. My partner is saying I should stay at my current job because I can work hybrid I can spend some weekends in LA once they move down there.

Personally I would love to be an ae but the long commute and it being contract for 3 months is something I don’t want to do. I don’t know if I will ever have another opportunity like this. If I don’t get the offer I’m okay tbh not the end of the world.

Also I have 2 weeks vacation planned in July.

What do yall think?

TLDR - I got promoted at my job with good pay and now I can work hybrid but I might have an opportunity to jump careers to be an assistant editor. The problem is the ae job is contract for 3 months with a possibility of being full time and I would commute from lebec to Culver City Monday to Friday. What advice do you have?
