Short women wanting tall men for taller children statistically doesn't make sense

Let's say this hypothetical short woman is 5'1 (25% chance a woman in the U.S. is 5'1 or shorter) and has a strict requirement of 6'0 or taller. Her partner ends up being 6'0 tall. The odds of a man being 6'1 or taller is 9%, 6'2 or taller is 3.9% and chances are they are taken or have more options than most men, so let's be realistic and set this man at 6'0 tall.

So the math to predict a child's height is (mother's height + father's height +5 inches for son or -5 inches for daughter) / 2

So (61+72+5) / 2 = 69 (5'9) So the range the son is likely to fall in is 5'7 to 5'11

So now let's say it's a 5'6 man and a 5'5 woman. I would say women between 5'3 and 5'6 don't have as crazy height requirements as I have seen with dating

(66+65+5) / 2 = 68 (5'8) so 5'6 to 5'10

So if a short woman beats the odds and finds a 6'0 tall man, the 5'6 man with a 5'5 woman has basically the same chance of their child ending up with the same height with just an inch apart

So it's just kinda funny to me seeing short women having such height requirements just to have a pretty good chance their sons being short regardless if they find a 6 ft tall man. So the point is, height requirements are pretty pointless unless you want to play the 3.9% odds and find someone above 6'0 to have tall kids, date who makes you happy because your kids will be short just like most short men's kids will be short

How I have been teaching myself spanish for the last 12 months

So the way I have been learning Spanish, is I have been watching a Spanish podcast on youtube called "How to Spanish" for the past year and on average their podcasts vids are between 20 minute and 25 minute videos. Here's been my routine everyday for the past year. From the first video last year I didn't know 378 words or phrases in a 20 minute podcast but as of today that number is down to just 88 in just a year. My background in Spanish was just 4 years of high school spanish which 95% didn't stick. Here's my process, Im happy to answer or clarify anything

  1. I started by only watching a 30 second interval a day. So let's say it's the very first day of a new video, I watch the first 30 seconds. I listen to it one time with no captions. Then I listen to it one time with captions.
  2. As I am listening to it 2nd time with captions I open up a google doc and I type the captions in Spanish in one long paragraph.
  3. As I am typing the paragraph, I open up a google sheet and the sheet has one column for the word in Spanish, a column for the word in English, and a column for any notes or rules to help me understand better the new word or phrase
  4. I use chatgpt so I can ask any very specific question about a rule, conjugation, translation, slang, etc. I've learned that google is too broad in its answers, google translate is unreliable, but you can use chatgpt for the most specific question about a phrase and it will break it down for you.
  5. I then retype the paragraph in English. It helps with following along with grammar rules, understanding that Spanish/English doesn't have exact translations but those small connector frases like (de lo que) I can help distinguish as to what it means through retyping the whole thing in English
  6. I then have a short speaking convo with chatgpt (I only do this cause I don't have spanish speaking friends) using the new words or phrases I learned
  7. Then the next day onwards, I listen from the very beginning of the video so the words I have learned are continually repeated to me each day, I then add a fresh new 30 seconds, and break down the new 30 seconds with the same process. So day 1 I watch 30 seconds, day 2 I watch 1 minute and go through the same process with the new 30 seconds of the day each day. This helps less with memorizing the language and instead helps me focus with pattern recognition and absorbing the language and speech patterns through repetition.
  8. At the end of the video you will have a few hundred new words or phrases you don't know, no need to memorize all of them but keep track of the total number. Now you will do the same exact process in the next video in 35 second intervals.
  9. If the total number of new words and phrases you learned in the 2nd video is less than your previous lowest total from any video before, you move on to 40 second intervals. If it is was higher you stay at 35 second intervals for video 3 until you beat your record. For example, my very first 30 second interval video was 378 words/phrases, I lowered that number to 198 my second video at 35 seconds, but if it was higher than 378 I remain at 35 second interval and I stay at 35 seconds until I get lower
  10. So you increase the intervals by 5 seconds (30, 45, 50, 55, 1 min) through this process and once you hit a minute you eliminate the part where you translate the spanish paragraph into English, slowly taking the training wheels off and you go by 10 second intervals ( 1 min 10 sec, 1 min 20 sec etc) but still keeping track of the number of words in your spreadsheet
  11. Once you hit the 2 minute interval. you increase the intervals 2 min 15 seconds, 2 min 30 seconds, etc) and you stop typing each interval into a spanish paragraph, now you are just listening to the podcast but still keeping track of the number of words/phrases in your spreadsheet.
  12. At 3 minutes, you increase 30 seconds, at 4 minutes you increase to 45 seconds, at 5 minutes you start adding by 1 minute, then you keep going to you reach a full 20 minute video. I am currently doing 2 minute and 30 second intervals right now so Im not there yet.

The goal is to get to zero, but it's helped me tremendously with my listening and everyday is a daily lesson of something new. The goal is to be honest with yourself, I have written the same word 3 or 4 times down as something new I learned, because context changes meanings and sometimes I just forget. If it's still fuzzy, it's still a new word. Also don't assume you know a word just because it's an easy translation. It also helps learning grammar, vocab, slang, listening, reading, writing, and a little bit of speaking all at once. I think I struggled with Spanish because after learning something like a grammar rule I would never see it again and forget about it. Here you are learning the most complicated rules and vocab along with easy stuff from the very beginning as a holistic process that doesn't ignore anything

For example today I learned the following just in 2 minutes 15 seconds

la retroalimentación = feedback

la investigación = investigation, research

el tutor = tutor

sé abierto = be open! (I didn't know the command form of ser was sé and it confused me)

ocupa a los amigos = keep your friends busy (weird translation that tripped me up)

sin querer = accidentally/by accident

proveer = to provide

adecuado = appropriate (I knew this, but I thought it meant adequate still)

dedicar = to dedicate/to devote

el revés = reverse

neutro = neutral

My father met Elton John before he was famous

My father was dating a girl that was close friends to Bernie Taupin's wife Maxine. Maxine and Bernie just recently met a few weeks prior. Maxine invited the two of them to her place in Hollywood and Bernie and Elton were there and they all talked and smoked joints for a night. Elton and Bernie only talked about music for a little bit and briefly mentioned their tour and my father is pretty sure it was right during their tour beginnings between August and October 1970. Too bad no picture exists lol but he had no idea who Elton John was when they met

Round 2: NBA Chaos Draft (comment any player in NBA history active or retired, draft order will be decided by the top 30 most voted comments)

yesterday's draft was quite interesting. We saw Tacko Fall with the very 1st pick, a very Sacramento decision. Adam Silver is now forced to play for the Rockets, Angel Reese is taking her talents to Phoenix, and Reggie Miller will play for his arch rival New York Knicks. Winners of the draft are for sure the Warriors stealing LeBron James with the 23rd pick and the Celtics snagging Tim Duncan with the 15th pick.

So the OKC Thunder won the draft lottery, who will play alongside OKC's Brian Scalabrine is the big question today

so just comment a player and participate in the upvoting/downvoting to establish a rank, don't comment a player you already see, I will not count repeats

Also don't just vote or comment for the player that you think should be the number one pick, vote/comment on any player you think should be in the 1st round so we get more variety

check yesterday's post and the spreadsheet so you don't comment a player already drafted as they will not be counted
