The censure was approved with almost 90% of the vote.
As part of the censure, the party will bar Polis from being a featured speaker or honored guest at official Democratic functions. But its real value was symbolic — a party distancing itself from its governor ahead of the 2026 election, and taking a public stand against leniency for an election denier who was convicted of multiple felonies.
More than 300 Democrats including elected officials, candidates and organizers have signed a formal complaint with the state party over Governor Jared Polis (D) giving clemency to Tina Peters.
Now, Democrats including state legislators and a Democratic National Committee member are calling for Polis to be officially reprimanded by the party and banned from speaking at party events.
The complaint alleges that by granting clemency to Peters, Polis engaged in "conduct detrimental to the interests of the Colorado Democratic Party," by undermining their efforts to combat election denialism.
Also on Wednesday, Senator Michael Bennet said he won't appoint Polis to the Senate if Bennet is elected Governor.
Polis, a Democrat, wrote in an executive order that Peters “is granted parole effective June 1.”
Peters thanked the governor in a statement released by her lawyer Peter Ticktin, and also expressed remorse for her actions for the first time.
