How to troubleshoot "expected value (list, dict, int or string) in bencoded string" in qBittorrent?

I am experiencing a persistent tracker error in qBittorrent (v5.2.2) and am looking for advice on how to troubleshoot it.

The Error: [Not working] expected value (list, dict, int or string) in bencoded string

Context:

  • My client is successfully communicating with peers via DHT, PeX, and LSD, but the specific tracker URL is returning the error above.
  • I have confirmed that my network connection is stable and other traffic is unaffected.
  • I am looking for advice on whether this is typically a client-side configuration issue, a cache/database issue within the software, or if there is a way to force a refresh of the tracker data that clears this specific error.

Any advice on where to look in the logs or which settings might influence how the client parses tracker responses would be appreciated.

Confused old man returning to torrenting

I was heavy into torrenting during the golden age from Napster till the fall of pirate bay. I'm returning to it because fuck streaming and especially fuck Crunchyroll. However I find that I'm now more than a lot out of touch and don't know what the hell anyone is talking about. Can someone help this poor crippled old bastard cross the torrenting street without getting hit by the copyright bus.

binhex-delugevpn using ~100-120% CPU with only one active download - normal or something to optimize?

I'm trying to optimize my Unraid server and have narrowed down an unexpectedly high CPU temperature to DelugeVPN.

System:

  • Unraid 7.2.3
  • Intel i5-13600K
  • 64 GB RAM
  • binhex-delugevpn (latest)
  • 1 Gbps internet
  • ARR stack (Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr, Prowlarr, Bazarr)

At first I thought I had a cooling issue because my CPU package temperature was sitting around 70-75°C almost constantly.

After some troubleshooting I found:

  • Stopping the entire ARR/media stack dropped CPU temperature immediately to 42-45°C.
  • I then restarted every container individually.
  • FlareSolverr, Prowlarr, Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr and Bazarr all caused only brief startup spikes before settling back to the low 40s.
  • As soon as I started binhex-delugevpn, CPU temperature climbed back into the mid-70s.

Using docker stats I see:

binhex-delugevpn 100-120% CPU

while most other containers are near 0%.

The interesting part is:

  • Only one torrent is actively downloading
  • No active seeding at the moment
  • Overall system CPU is only around 5%, but one P-core is repeatedly hitting 100%.

I have already reduced Deluge's limits to:

Queue

  • Active Torrents: 10
  • Active Downloads: 3
  • Active Seeds: 10

Bandwidth

  • Global Connections: 200
  • Connections per Torrent: 50
  • Upload Slots: 20
  • Upload Slots per Torrent: 4

These changes reduced Deluge CPU slightly (about 120% → 100%) but CPU temperature remains around 74°C.

Questions:

  1. Is ~100% CPU normal for Deluge with only one active torrent?
  2. Are there any known libtorrent/binhex-delugevpn settings that significantly reduce CPU usage?
  3. Are there other Deluge settings I should investigate before considering another torrent client?
  4. Has anyone compared Deluge vs qBittorrent on Unraid from a CPU efficiency perspective?

I'd appreciate any suggestions. My goal isn't to maximize download speed at all costs—I just want a good balance between performance and CPU utilization.

Is it even worth seeding behind CGNAT? (No port forwarding)

Hey guys, I'm currently stuck behind CGNAT with no public IP, which means I obviously can't port forward. Because of this, I'm basically a passive user and can't connect to any other passive leechers out there.

As soon as my downloads hit 100%, my upload speed pretty much drops to zero. I'm convinced CGNAT is completely killing my ability to seed anything.

Is there even any point in leaving my client open at this point? Am I actually helping the swarm at all, or am I just wasting electricity?

Also, is there any workaround for this besides paying for a premium VPN that supports port forwarding? Does making sure IPv6 is enabled help with this nowadays, or am I just out of luck? I really want to keep a good ratio and give back, but right now it feels almost impossible. Thanks

(By the way, I'm pretty new to torrenting, so sorry if this is a dumb question or if I got some terms wrong. Still trying to learn the ropes!)

I made a tiny tool that auto-extracts your qBittorrent downloads and finds the setup file for you

I was getting annoyed with having to manually right-click -> extract every time a game finished downloading, and then digging through the folders just to find the setup.exe.

So I wrote a small standalone executable that hooks into qBittorrent. When a download finishes, it automatically extracts any rars/zips and pops up a clean GUI showing you exactly which executables it found, so you can just click and run them. It also has buttons to delete the source archive or remove the torrent from qB when you're done.

It's entirely open source. Let me know if you find it useful or have any feedbacks!

qBittorrent + Hydra Launcher + Stremio = BATorrent!!!

BATorrent

Three months ago I posted an early version of BATorrent here. It worked, but it looked like every other torrent client. A spreadsheet of file names and progress bars. Got a quiet 15 upvotes and died. Fair enough. I kept going. Here's where it is now.

Before - After

Most torrent clients look like a tax form. BATorrent shows your downloads as a wall of movie, show and game covers instead. It reads the torrent name and pulls the real poster (TMDB for film and TV, IGDB for games). One key flips it to a plain list if you want that. Under the hood it runs on libtorrent, the same engine as qBittorrent, and it's native on Windows, macOS and Linux. Real Qt, not Electron. It's not a pretty shell over a weak client. It's a real one that happens to have taste.

Hub Page

Search is the part I like most. You type a name and get a wall of posters with ratings. Movies, shows and games together, from a bunch of sources, no login. Not a table of cryptic file names. You search once and click the right release.

Search Page

There's a Discover page too, trending and new stuff, so you open the app to browse and not only to paste magnets.

Discover Page

The built-in player streams the file while it's still downloading, subtitles included. It fetches them, or you drop your own .srt. No waiting for 100%, no "open it in VLC". And games install with one click. You find a game, click once, it downloads and installs itself, ready to play. Your movies and your games end up in the same library.

Built In Player

There's a command palette on Ctrl/Cmd+K. Fuzzy-find any torrent, action or page from one bar, no mouse. I stole the idea from Raycast and VS Code. Never saw it in a torrent client.

Command Pallete

Six themes, plus a fully custom one where you setown background image. No two installs have to look the same.

8 Themes

You can drive it from anywhere. A tray popup with live speeds and quick controls, and a browser WebUI you pair by scanning a QRcode from your phone. The code is generated localves the machine.

WebUI Pair

Under all that it has full qBittorrent parity. RSial download, per file priority, per torrentlimits, IP filtering, protocol encryption, import from qBittorrent, create .torrent, bandwidth scheduler. It also refreshes youPlex, Jellyfin or Emby library when a download fi on either. VPN interface binding with a realkill switch, so if the tunnel drops all traffic stops. Tor preset, anonymous handshake, anti leecher blocking, private tracker mode.

List View

It's translated into eight languages, picked auto:

🇬🇧 English · 🇧🇷 Português · 🇪🇸 Español · 🇩🇪 Deutsch · 🇷🇺 Русский · 🇯🇵 日本語 · 🇨🇳 中文 · 🇺🇦 Українська

8 Themes

I'm one guy in Brazil. It's free and MIT licensed. No ads, no telemetry, no "Pro" tier, no account to make. And because it's MIT it can't be quietly sold to some company that bole only call it makes on its own is the update check, and you can turn that off.

You can get it for free at batorrent.com

Built solo, on every spare hour, over months. Bugs, feature requests, harsh criticism, all welcome. That's how it got this far.

[Help] qBittorrent – downloads still showing up on iknowwhatyoudownload.com even with DHT/PeX/LPD disabled

Hi everyone,

I need some help with qBittorrent. I can't afford a paid VPN right now, so I'm trying other ways to keep my downloads somewhat anonymous.

I already tried I2P, but the torrent availability is very limited and I can't find what I'm looking for. So I went back to qBittorrent.

My current setup:

  • DHT, PeX and Local Peer Discovery are disabled.
  • Anonymous mode is enabled.
  • Encryption is set to "Allow encryption".

The problem: Even with these options disabled, the torrents I download still show up on iknowwhatyoudownload.com under my public IP.

My questions:

  • If DHT/PeX/LPD are disabled, what could be causing my IP to be exposed?
  • Could public trackers (HTTP/UDP) be revealing my IP, even with anonymous mode on?
  • Is there any extra setting in qBittorrent that could help reduce exposure?
  • Is there any free alternative (other than I2P) for someone without a VPN?

I know a paid VPN would be ideal, but it's not possible right now. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

[Transmission] How do I keep DHT/LDP/PEX enabled for public torrents and those disabled for private?

I'm using Transmission on my PI5, and I'm trying to both be able to use private and public torrents, but the private trackers I'm using is requiring I disable DHT/LDP/PEX, when I'd like these enabled for public torrents (since its often niche stuff with almost no peers). Can I have both of these things or do I just have to accept not having these enabled?

edit: Thanks for the answers! I looked deeper into it, the client respects the private flag and disables DHT and PEX

Streaming services camping RD torrents now 😭

So House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1 dropped today at 9 night EST, and I wanted to watch it. I waited about 30 minutes for the first torrent to get uploaded, but as soon as I clicked on it in Stremio, it got instantly removed for copyright reasons lol. Even now, more than two hours later, all of the 4K files are still gone.

This is pretty wild. It never used to be like this, but it seems to be becoming the new normal. Even older shows that I used to watch without any issues are slowly getting removed. Is there any way to fix this?

At this rate, I feel like RD won't have any files left to stream anymore lol.

What's really crazy is how it seems like copyright enforcement services are basically camping the episode release times and immediately taking down files the moment they appear. I've never seen it this aggressive before. In the past, I could usually wait an hour or so after release and stream a 4K version without any problems. Now everything is getting wiped almost instantly. This is honestly wild.

Problem with torrents on qbitorrent

Hey, everyone!

I've been downloading audiobooks from audiobookbay, and for the last weeks I was able to download about 10-15 audiobooks via qbitorrent.

However, since last week I've been having this problem: every torrent I download remains "stopped".

Am I doing something wrong or do the torrents need to be reseeded?

I've been able to download torrents from trackers like MAM in the meantime, so I'm not sure it's a problem with my client.

Thank you in advance :)
