Change Thunderbird date format

New to Thunderbird. I've gone through all the menus. Preferences, appearance etc.

According to the help site I have to go through all kinds of hoops to change the date format from yank to EU.

That is something that should just be in the settings!

Wrong episodes downloaded

I've just downloaded a couple of episodes of what was supposed to be season 2 of a series. They were listed as season 2. But they turned out in fact all to be season 1.

Is there any way to check what I'm getting before downloading the whole thing? This is the first time I've come across this. Although once I downloaded something and it turned out to be a completely different show. I guess it was a mistake by whoever seeded them in the first place. The description didn't list the files,

Maybe there is a way to view an excerpt once the downloading has begun? I'm currently using Transmission software but open to other suggestions, in Ubuntu 24.04

Wrong episodes

I've just downloaded a couple of episodes of what was supposed to be season 2 of The Undeclared War (buffering makes Channel 4 unwatchable!). They turned out in fact to be season 1.

Is there a way of signalling this?

Downloading starts after reloading Transmission

So I added a few torrents this morning to Transmission (+ VPN) and nothing had happened after 45 minutes. So I closed Transmission and started it again, then everything starts downloading.

Odd. I have added torrents to Transmission while open in the past and no problems.

Just wondering why this would happen. Maybe I could have achieved the same result by clicking on Pause All, and then Start All.

How to change destination folder on Google TV?

I 've set up Localsend on my latop (Ubuntu) and Nokia Google TV.

The trouble is that the client on the TV doesn't give me the option to change the path where the files are stored. The default location is on the Downloads folder on the TV's internal memory, which is really low. When I try to change the location, that just closes the LocalSend app.

I'm new to Localsend. In the past I've used Send Files to TV, but that doesn't work with Linux so I have to first transfer the files to an Android device before sending them to the TV.

Is there a way to move kindle ebooks from Android app to elderly physical Kindle?

It used to be possible just by going to the Amazon web site and using the manage devices option. But this is no longer possible for old Kindles.

So I do lots of reading and shopping using an Android tablet. But it would be nice read stuff on my kindle, which works perfectly but Amazon has deemed obsolete.

I thought maybe I could copy the relevant files from the tablet and load them onto the Kindle, figuring that DRM shouldn't be a problem since they are both registered to the same account.

However, I haven't even managed to find the files on the tablet. I suppose they must be in some other format.

Is there a way to do this? Or shall I just use the Kindle for reading books downloaded DRM-free from wherever I can find them?

My android TV stopped seeing a USB drive

I have two 64 GB USB drives plugged into the back of my android TV for recording live TV and for playing downloaded stuff.

Until recently all worked fine until recently. Now the TV doesn't see one of the drives. I've tried swapping the drives round and restarting the TV. I checked the misbehaving drive on my computer. It's formatted Exfat, hasn't reverted to read only. In short, it works fine. I've also tested it on the cheap Chinese streaming box in the bedroom. It works fine there too.

OK, I can get by with just one USB drive plugged into the TV, but I'd like to know what's going on.

How to add BBC iplayer to selected discover services

I have the BBC iPlayer app on my Google TV, geounblocked via a DNS config on my home router.

But BBC Iplayer just simply isn't listed among the list of possible streaming services.

Same goes for Channel 4.

Maybe the country settings need to be changed in the Plex set up, but I haven't found where they are, if any.

What can I do with strutto?

Uses for strutto

I bought some strutto at an Italian supermarket. It was in the refrigerated fresh cheese section, along with straciatella, mozzarella etc, and packaged similarly, so I thought I was getting some kind of fresh cheese.

Now I find I am the owner of a lump of lard, something that I don't usually use.

So I am looking for ideas. Or shall I just leave it aside until the next time I make roast potatoes (which is not very often).

Are there any advantages in using it for frying over cooking oil?

My Nokia Android TV is short of ram. What can I do?

I've installed a few apps, not really very many (hbomax, BBC, itvx, VPN, FreeTv, Plex), and running it under Projectivy. But I get an " insufficient memory" message when I try to add more.

First question: why ship a TV with so little memory

Second question: what T do about it.

I already have a USB dongle for PVR, maybe I could move some apps to it, but how?

Mackerel turns floury after cooking in air fryer

Hello, I cooked a mackerel in my air fryer - 12 minutes at 200 degrees (that's about 390 F) - turning it over half way through.

The skin was crisp, but the inside of the fish had turned into a very unusual floury texture. The mackerel seemed very fresh, so I don't think that was the problem.

Maybe the cooking time was too long? Or something else?

Are there search codes on HBOMax similar to the ones on Netflix

I switched from Netflix to Hbomax (cos I got a really good deal) a year ago. My main problem has been finding what to watch. Netflix has a whole pile of cheat codes enabling you to search by genre, sub-genre, sub-sub-genre, language, and a whole lot of other criteria.

On HBOMax, the search possibilities are far more limited. The HBOMax recommendations are totally useless.

And then, when you do find something that could be worth watching, there is almost no information. A couple of lines of vague summary and possibly a trailer that doesn't give a real impression of the nature of the film or series. I have to go to Google or IMDB or something similar just to find basic information, like the names of actors and directors.

The only way of getting any useful leads is reviews in the media and word of mouth!

Pull your socks up HBO.

Slightly smaller USB-A socket.

I have been given an old laptop to restore, with just two USB connectors One is a standard USB A socket. The second is only a very marginally smaller, but is too small to receive a standard USB A plug. I thought of maybe filing the sides of one of those very small USB memories that have no casing.

My questions are:

  1. what is the point of such a connector? It is hardly any smaller than a standard USB A, so there is no space saving. In any case, on this computer it was sitting next to the standard USB A.

  2. What is it called?. I've tried googling to find an adapter, or maybe an extension lead, but I only come up with mini-USB and micro USB.

  3. Are the connections completely compatible with USB-A

I've seen another thread on Reddit, where someone asks for help because they got something jammed in the socket. But it doesn't answer these questions.

At first I thought it must be an old standard, but recently a friend told me she had had the same problem with a computer she had just bought new.

Should I wipe a second-hand drive.

I bought an SSD on ebay so I could install Ubuntu 26.04 without touching my existing setup - Ubuntu 24.10 on a T430 laptop that lets you change drive just by sliding one out and swapping.

I had planned to just wipe the new drive, but to my surprise it already had Ubuntu on it and it started up normally on my laptop instead of booting from the USB installation thumb-drive. But of course it wanted the log-in password.

Being a nosey sort of person, I took a peek at the contents of the new drive by connecting it to a USB port while running my current Ubuntu. I saw that the previous owner had erased all their documents, but hadn't emptied the trash! But all the documents were in an unusual format.

Is this how a computer repair shop once found compromising documents on a politician's old computer?

I'm surprised the drive was sold in this state. The ebay seller was actually a computer refurbishment store, so supposedly professional.

Should I wipe this drive?

BBC iPlayer live channels not working

Replay working but not the live channels on Google tv

I'm using BBC iPlayer with a VPN on my Google TV in France. Recently all the live channels have stopped working, but the replays work fine.

The same configuration works fine (ie both the live channels and replay work) on my Android tablet.

Odd! Any ideas what's going on?

Is the amount of advertising on HBO Max going down?

We got the advertising tier about 11 months ago on a really great deal. Lately I've noticed the amount of advertising has gone down monumentally. Many shows don't have advertising breaks any more and frequently there aren't even ads before the start.

Is this a general trend on hbomax, or are they trying to keep me as a subscriber after the end of the deal?

I originally posted this on the hbomax sub Reddit, but for some reason the auto moderator thought it was not relevant to that group.

Stay on the plane during 50 minute layover in Rome

I am travelling to Trieste from Nice on ITA airways and have a 50 minute layover in Rome each way. With such a short stop I suspect it could be the same plane, but have not been able to find out. Each leg is on an Airbus A220-100.

Looking at the ITA schedules, I notice that Paris to Trieste also has a 50 minute stop, but the times are different from the Nice flights. So it looks as though ITA regularly do this kind of thing.

Anyone have any experience of this ? Or any other thoughts?
